Seriously, the govt should enforce legislation to penalize cars with no abs or airbags with higher taxes. Only then when it becomes more expensive to sell a lesser safe car would these companies provide such features.

Something tells me that you have not take a look at the Manza, that would have assured you that Tata is improving by leaps and bounds. Even the Vista didn't have a lot of initial niggles and the first customers were not treated to the guinea pig experience.

Recently read in news paper, Used Tata Nano costs 30% more than new. You might not have noticed, but Tata came a long way since the initial launch of Indica.

Indeed they have. But so has the competition. All I am trying to say here is that they better sort out what segment they are targeting. It does not seem to be the commercial vehicle or the BPO segment going by their advertising. If its not and families is what they have in mind, then they should provide safety features like ABS and AirBags too. If nothing then as an optional addition. I donot think that cannibalization of Indicruz sales should bother them. Maruti has multiple offerings in the same B+ hatch segment and still doing well.

the MKII would have the Safari as the next step vehicle, the Indicruz seems to be a step above the Safari and the Innova as well, so it would not be fair to state that the MKII has give way to the Indicruz, the MKII should be able to do better number in the long run compared to the Indicruz which is much more premium.

Raelly like what I have read and seen of the Vista here. TATA is surely going the right way with its products. Sure will give good competition to the Zylo!!

The interiors are better now for sure and the concern left is that of the rear leaf spring suspension. Just wondering if FSD or some kind of suspension mods might help here. Would appreciate some comments from the experts.

Default Report & Pics: Sumo Grande Launch Mumbai

Just got back from the launch of the Tata Sumo Grande Mark II here in Mumbai. Apart from cosmetic changes and a few add ons, Tata has done some changes to make the Mark II a better car than its predecessor

Some highlights of the Grand Mark II
  • A changed drive ratio for better FE.
  • A modified suspension for a comfortable ride especially for the second and third row passengers.
  • Optimised anti roll bars to reduce body roll during cornering.
  • Short turning circle of 5.25 m. Lowest in its category.
  • Height adjustable driver's seat.
  • A new and smaller steering wheel with floating horns.
  • Indicators on the ORVMs.
  • Electrically adjustable ORVMs.
  • Two tone interiors with wood on the centre console and door pads.
  • A grab handle on the C pillar to help egress of passengers in the third row.

I happened to meet up with Mr Rajeev Dubey, the President, Passenger cars at Tata Motors and happened to ask him that even though the Scorpio and the Safari compete with each other in the market, is Tata was looking to put up the Grande Mark II against the Scorpio as well to which he replied " We are not only looking at the Scorpio as competition but also other utility vehicles in the same price bracket as the Mark II." He also went on to add they were looking to lure buyers of premium hatches ( 6-7 lakhs) towards the much bigger Grande. ABS is an option to be offered at a later stage.

Tata is offering a standard 2 year/ 75,000 km warranty on the Mark II. An extended 2 year warranty upto 1,50,000 kms is also available. Free 24x7 roadside assistance is part of the warranty as well.

The Sumo Grande is available in three variants. Prices all three models (Ex Showroom Delhi)

Grande Mark II LX - 6.43 lakhs
Grande Mark II EX - 6.83 lakhs
Grande Mark II GX - 7.50 lakhs

Three new colours are also being introduced: Walnut Gold, Platinum Beige and Castle Grey.

And now for some pictures

I still cannot digest the look. Meanwhile, the improvements are welcome, though not quite upto scratch.

Time for a Grande vs Xylo comparison. Keeping the pricing in mind, maybe Grande GX vs Xylo E6.

Thats the dumbest looking vehicle in India. The older Sumo and Xylo look far better. Not sure who would want to be seen driving in this? (no wonder the kid was hiding in the ad)

I will have a look at it once it is in the Chennai rooms. I have been postponing my decision to book a Manza in order to see if TATA would improve the shortcomings of the GRANDE substantially

What would you guys call the sequel to the hit movie "Flop"?

How about Floppier, Super Flop, Flop Mark II, Flop Grande?

Some Grande Fans think Grande failed due to poor interiors. If that is the case, their prayers have been answered and Mark II has improved interiors, so now it should become a hit, right?

Personally, I don't buy this bad interior argument. As posted elsewhere, Tata screwed up on Product, Positioning and Pricing. If they are targetting families like the Xylo is, then they need to give it coil springs at back and make you want to put someone besides your mother-in-law over the leaf springs. Top end variant should have been offered with ABS atlest and maybe 4WD.

They should improve the product and make it a direct competitor of the Xylo. This means offering ABS and Air Bags as an option and updating the rear suspension from leaf to coil springs.

I actually find cup holders in the glove box useful, in case your RC Book, Insurance and other important documents fall asleep, you can wake them up by spilling some coffee into your glove box when you suddenly go over one of those unmarked bumps which are common on our highways.

Disappointing. Why TATA compromise on quality for making the price down. They should sell their products with good quality at better price.
