Cool All mine, All New Honda City!

Finally and unexpectedly I am now an owner of ANHC. This is what I bought:

Which car ? : ANHC
Model : Automatic Transmission.
Color : Bold beige.
When? : 24-March-2010
Dealer : White field Honda, Bangalore

Why change the car ?

I had a 2004 model Wagon-R Vxi, Brilliant Yellow color. Due
to its color the car was well known around the locality I live in and also among
my friends and relatives. The main reasons to think about car changes were:

- I was spending too much money on its repairs/spare replacements.

- It felt like an elephant ride every time the car went over Bangalore's hillocks,
i mean speed breakers, and over various small and large pot holes. My wife
refused to sit in the back seat of the car as she felt nauseating every time
the drive duration crossed 20 mins. My mother also had the same complaint.

- back seat was not sufficient for 3 people to sit comfortably.

Other cars considered:

Swift : This car had good reviews. But there were too many of these on the road. And some how back of my mind wanted to stay away from Maruti
this time.

Swift Dezire : I almost booked this one during Dec 2008 but had to back out due to these reasons

- Long and unreasonable waiting period for Swift Dezire.

- Unprofessional sales persons from Maruti dealers.

- The recession fears.

Getz CRDI :

Interestingly Hyundai had released Getz CRDI around that time. I called up the
showroom on the 100ft Road I'nagar. The sales person said that there are no
test drive vehicles. But he offered me to test drive a ready to deliver car !!!!
I asked him, "would you buy a shirt that I have worn for a day and returned to
the shop?" He said no. I just left it at that and never bothered about Getz.
Fiat Grande Punto: Stunning looks and good ride quality. But the TBHP reviews
indicated that plastic and over all interior quality was not up to the mark. Having
owned a car already I understand the value of quality. I didn't want a car
which would make me run again and again to the service station for repairs/replacements.

Hyundai i20: I just love the looks. But again TBHP reviews indicated that
engine is not up to the mark. Also I am not a big fan of Hyundai brand. The
experience in Getz CRDI test drive request added to the negative impressions
that I had for this brand.

Volkswagan Polo: This did create a lot of interest, but after its launch I just
crossed it out of my list. Since it shared certain things with Skoda Fabia I
didn't want to take risks. I was looking for car which would last for at least
8 trouble free years.

Honda JAZZ: The price was a big dampener. But still I went ahead and did some
research on this. I had almost finalized on this and went for a test drive.
Everything about the car was good except:
- No alloy wheels!! I was damn sure that my next car will have these.
- No USB/AUX support
- Back seat not very comfortable.
- Not very effective AC.

I dont know if it was good or bad, except for Dezire and JAZZ I ruled out all the above cars even with out driving or touching them.

Finally ANHC: From the day it launched I just loved the looks. The back portion, the
front grill the over all arrow shot looks were just too tempting. Also since
I had eliminated Honda JAZZ from the list I decided to try it out.
There were lots of good feedback on Honda in general. I was first
thinking about Manual transmission but then when I test drove the Auto transmission
model my heart said AT and my mind said MT. After some thought and looking at the
TBHP reviews I decided that AT suites be good considering the fact that I am
looking at next 8 years of ownership and driving in Bangalore traffic. While
I was till contemplating about AT/MT etc. Mr Pranab Mukharjee raised the duty
on the cars and it became dearer by about Rs. 15K. the Mr. Yeddiyurappa announced
that he is going to extract more VAT and Road tax from April 1, I had to hurry.
I just made my mind and zeroed in on Auto transmission.

I called the Magnum Honda for another test drive. The sales person came to my house
on a week end. I wanted check if the car fits in to the parking space available in my
house. Luckily it just about fitted in. A big problem solved.

I asked him about the freebies, he gave a big lecture about how Honda doesn't give
any freebies and how it considers this as illegal blah blah blah. I said forget
it.

I then contacted White field Honda, Ms. Geeta. Some of the TBHians had a very
good feed back on the dealer and also on Ms. Geeta. She is a thorough professional.
With out much discussion she offered me these freebies:
- Sun film
- Bumper protectors
- Floor mats (I got good ones)
- Rear parking sensors.

Later on I also got these:
- Body cover
- Puncture kit
- Car perfume
- Ganesha Idol

I couldn’t get any good deal on the Insurance since I already had 3 claims
on my Wagon-R. Went in for Loan from Kotak Mahindra at 9.5%. I then sold my
Wagon-R for Rs. 1.65 Lakhs. Sold some of my shares and managed about 50% of the
down payment. The rest I took the loan. The OTR price of the CAR was Rs. 11.7 Lakhs.
So over 2 years, my intended budget for the car went from 6 Lkhs (Swift) to 11.7 Lakhs!!!!

I took the delivery of the car on 23 March. I plan to get these done soon:
- Leather seat covers. I have decided to go for Karlsson at I'nagar Bangalore.

- Sun film for front wind shield

- Get the IND number plates.

Its just 3 days with the new car and 'I am loving it'. Will post the detailed
review along with photos after I have got done the above works.

Congratulations on the new addition to your garage. When you bet on Honda, you just cant go wrong. You will have many many years of trouble free ownership all you need to do is regular maintenance. The auto tranny is worth its weight in gold in the city traffic, let me tell you. A great choice overall.

Thanks to all folks for your wishes. I am still getting used to the AT style of driving. Will post a detailed review after I have spent some more time with the car. The seats covers are still stock and I have still not removed the plastic covers and hence the interior looks very ugly. I have placed an order for leather seats with Karlssons just today. They said they will fit them in my car only on Friday. It seems they do only one car in a day. Once that is done will surely post the pics. I will try to take some pics of exterior tomorrow.

Yes true, that exactly is the reason for stretching the budget soooo much...

Just love it. Overtaking is much easier. But that FE indicator is very distracting. Its showing about 8.9 Kmpl, but I guess it improves after couple of services.

OT : When I visited Karlssons today there was a German guy. That guy it seems is getting the seats of his car (I heard it as JLR, not sure) transported form Germany to Bangalore just to get the leather seats done at Karlssons!! And it seems his colleague did the same thing few months back. Not sure if that is because Karlsson does world class job or the leather work in Germany is damn expensive..or probably both.

Hey vnk77,
Congratulations on your new car and welcome to the proud ANHC club. Incidentally I own the same color and I will tell you that it's very easy to maintain. You can't make out whether the car is dusted at all.

Great picture. Expect to hear more about your initial ownership and there seems to be flurry of AT's these days.

Vik0728,
Drop in power with AC is something associated with small cars, esp with 1.2 ltr and below. I haven't noticed on 1.4lts and above, more so with ANHC. I have clocked speeds of 160 with AC on ANHC. So it doesn't matter at all.
