Once the seal is opened and the oil is exposed to air, viscosity changes with time. Oil becomes thicker. IMO, it is best to change oil once in 15000kms / 12 months, as recommended by the manufacturer.

Hi Ankit,

Thank you for the excellent review of your 1.6 Polo, and your research on aftermarket HUs. They both contributed greatly to my decision to book a 1.6 Polo and also upgrade to the Witson HU. The throaty growl of the 1.6 beyond 3500 rpm on the test drive also helped! Do you get similar acceleration in 3rd and 4th gear at higher rpms? I sort of ran out of road at 120 in 3rd gear during the test drive.

Could you please PM me the details of the person who helped with your Witson install? It seems you installed the HU yourself but I'm not sure I'll be able to manage that on my own either. Thanks in advance!

Yup the 3rd and 4th gear offer good power and acceleration.
Well to be honest you can get your witson installed by taking it to just about any decent car audio shop! I took small help from one of the workers at the VW gurgaon showroom to remove the dash-plate.

Heya ankit
How goes the Witson? Its been quite some time. Thanks to your research , I love my car with the Witson and the upgraded speakers even more now.
Did u have any issues with the VW guys when you went in for the service? I have n cut any wires for my installation as well, but just curious to know.

Just wanted to know if the unit is doing well in your car as well. Have you gone in for any more upgrades?

Thanks- am planning to ask the dealer to do the install. They've agreed to do it and hopefully won't change their mind once they see the Witson. Should help with any warranty issues too.

My car has developed a strange problem. Today morning i saw a small crack in my front windshield. By evening it had gotten bigger. There is no damage on the car near the front windshield, but the crack starts from the bottom of the windshield. I wonder if its a manufacturing defect and if it is covered in the car warranty.
Surely there hasn't been any damage to the car as i drive it myself daily and the car is parked well secured inside the house. Attaching a few images of the crack. Any advice?

Wow no reply/advice considering there are so many active polo vento members. Anyways I went today to the VW gurgaon workshop fearing the worst that I would have to fight for my case and say it's is a genuine warranty claim. But I was surprised , the service advisor came looked at it and promptly said it's in warranty don't worry. They will take the car tommorrow and I should get it by the next day. Hope everything goes smooth now and they will have one very satisfied customer in me !

Have no idea if a manufacturing defect can cause a crack to suddenly appear, but perhaps a pebble impacted the windshield while driving without your noticing?

Anyhow, glad to hear that VW is replacing it without any quibbling. It would have been unsafe to drive with a cracked windshield since it would not have behaved as designed to in case of any subsequent impact.

Glad to know they would replace under warranty.

Gives reassurance to VW owners on their service part which is still in infancy.

Cheers!

Ankit,
A friend of mine installed the same Witson HU on his Polo. He wants to know how to activate the GPS, which software name/version and any installation procedure as such. Can you please PM me the details?
Thanks!

Ankit, could you also please PM me the contact details of the person who helped with your install? The VW Saket people don't seem to confident, and Driven has got mixed reviews on TBHP. Thanks!

I just came across this post. Something similar happened to my Ikon's glass a couple of years ago. The guard at my office parking came to tell me that he had noticed a small crack in the glass which seemed to keep growing bigger.

The folks at Windshield experts said that it was something to do with the car being parked in the sun with all internal air vents closed. Heat causes the built up cabin pressure to exert force on the windshield from inside causing it to crack. Then onwards, I always leave the air vents open.

Another theory is that at times a small loose pebble from the road thrown onto the windscreen during normal driving can cause a nearly invisible crack in the windscreen which keeps growing within the toughened glass. However, such cracks usually spread out as a web.

well you can take it to any small time audio shop and any mechanic would be able to do it for you. As far as i remember, my unit came with a wiring harness but it wasn't required , instead the one already present in the car was just plugged in.

I have done my complete audio install from driven and i would vouch for it. But yeah if you go there just to get your Witson installed, i doubt they would give you proper attention.

Thanks Ankit- have got a wiring harness as well, as well as a smaller camera than the one in your pics. I think they have changed the model/given me a different one. Don't intend to change the speakers.

Hope your windshield was satisfactorily replaced by VW.

Unhappy Re: Another 1.6 Polo

The windshield was replaced without any hassles and the car was ready within a day. I must appreciate the complete professional attitude of VW Frontier Auto Gurgaon for handling the warranty issue.
Sadly my happiness was short lived. Yesterday i was rushing to office trying to save that one second as apparently i work in an office where if i reach even a single second late, my half days salary is cut-no questions asked (yes it sounds crazy but even in todays world such hopeless practices are followed).
So i was doing a good 50km/hr when the car in front braked suddenly as a wayward cyclist came in front of him. To make matters worse his maruti's brake lights were not working and i only realized the situation when i saw smoke coming out of his wheels which were locked up by then. All my braking went in vain and i glided into his back. I managed to turn my car just in time to avoid getting hit by another car from behind.

The car got damaged badly. Front bumper, upper grille, hood, condenser will all be replaced. The headlamps were not damaged but their locking mechanism broke. I handed the car over to the workshop yesterday only and got the car surveyed for the insurance claim.

I was trying to save my half days salary but instead ended up with a damage worth my one month's salary! I am gutted at my mistake and the obvious damage to the car;my first since i started driving. LESSON LEARNED: always keep sufficient distance from the car in front.
I won't be putting up the damage car images unless something goes wrong with the repair or the insurance claim. Not a happy diwali for me.
