Default Fixing my own bumper

Concorde Motors quoted 3300/- to fix the keyings on my bumper.

I planned to do it myself. I purchased the following items.

1. Com-Paint value pack - 400/-
2. Sand paper 80, 220, 600, 1000, 1500 grit - 40/-
3. Putty (1 kg) + hardener - 250/-
4. Cellocoat Primer putty - 65/-
5. Masking tape - 2 Nos - 40/-
6. Applicator - 5/-

Well spent 800/- and 3 hours of labour.

Pics should do the rest of the talking!

Now that is some serious stuff there. I can understand about small scratches but you have done an excellent work on such prominent scratches.

The price quoted by the service guys was a shocker to me. I was an enthusiast since my childhood, finally got to do it, and i'm happy with the results

Thanks neoonwheels. It gives immense satisfaction looking at the results, as we can give attention to every detail, which otherwise some body shops don't. And if they do, they are expensive.

EB,

Please start a new thread mentioning all the intricate details for this paint job. It could become a referrence thread for all of us who would like to carry out scratch repairs on their own.

Would love to. Here is the picture of the scratch.

I had to sand with 80 grit sand paper (wet sanding) to level the surface. I feathered the edges after leveling. After plastic filler and hardener were mixed, I applied the filler to the damaged area. It dries in about 20 mins. Need the sand with 80 grit and later with 220 grit sand paper (wet sanding) to remove the extra filler and level the surface. Care needs to be taken not to apply extra filler where it is not required, i.e. on the unsanded surface, paint would peel off along with the filler like in the picture below.

Tu sei una stella...la mia stella - BNW Grande Punto MJD Emotion-20112010025.jpg

I used the grey putty as i did not have a plastic primer. If this putty is used, the surface would be paint ready. General procedure is to use an abrasive primer, which would fill in the lines which are visible due to sanding. After applying the grey putty/primer, the surface needs to be wet sanded with 220, 600 and 1000 grit paper to get a smooth finish. 220 grit is used to remove the extra putty and level the surface. 600 and 1000 grit can be used to smoothen the surface. This procedure can be repeated to our satisfaction. Once the surface is level and smooth, it can be painted.

There might be some faint lines visible after paint, in which case the grey putty can be applied, and wet sanded with 600/1000 grit sand paper. I used Com-Paint as i did not have a compressor and spray gun. Solid shades do not need a clear coat for shine. Care needs to be taken in masking the rest of the area's to avoid overspray.

Aerosol spray needs to be held at on optimum distance to get a nice finish and shine.

Wax polish can be used after a day or two to buff it to look new

Wow, the paint job looks neat!! Excellent work.
The fact that you got the com-paint in bossa nova white is really surprising. Very little Punto aftermarket accessories are available. It took me a good month to find a proper antenna for my Punto. I have got a couple of scratches on my car and will try this.

Default FIAT Factory Visit

I had an amazing opportunity to visit the FIAT plant at Ranjangaon, Pune. The trip was organized by another forum. There were about 80-100 cars which drove to Ranjangaon from VITS hotel pune. The article from CarWale is here Fiat India invites 125 Enthusiasts to its Ranjangaon Plant CarWale News

It was great to see a Punto being manufactured right from pressed metal. Everything in the plant was automated. We were shown the Body shop, Assembly line, Power train plant and the transmission plant. All stuff was explained clearly. I could see 2011 cars being built on the assembly line for the next year. Here a few pics. Will post more details and pictures soon.

A complimentary sticker was given from FIAT: pics attached!

Default A recent hit my car took on Hyd-Pune route

I hit a pothole at 120kph. The rim took a serious hit. The tyre being tubeless saved me as the air didn't come out all of a sudden. I pulled over to assess the damage. Had to change the tyre and resume journey.

I got the rim straightened in Pune. Pics attached.

Need suggestions on whether I should upgrade to alloys, or wait for the tyres to wear, and then go for a 15 inch tyre + Alloy combo?

Ooopss, you must have might hit the hole really hard.
If vitamin M is not a concern, i will suggest go ahead and get them changed to alloys.
Mainly because alloys are much more stronger than these steel rims and should be able to withstand these kind of stuff much better than steel rims. Otherwise keep the damaged rim as a spare and continue with your ride .Also if you go for alloys please make it a point to go for alloys with recommemded FIAT's pcd.

Cheers and drive safe .
