@Ampere, we are looking at the same water body, but from some other end. This one seems to be after the Checkpost at Avalanche, so it could be the other side of Avalanche lake. The other side most often had less water.

The place where we both have been to is the other end, nearer to the Emerald lake.

The "more water" pics were taken from near the bridge separating Avalanchi and Emerald lakes. However there is "evidence" about the variation in water levels.

I am posting some pics from my Aug 2010 and Mar 2011 trips to Ooty. surprisingly March pics show more water than August pics (even though it was monsoon time)

Lauks, even I thought the same. As you said, we had seen it from the Emerald lake side.
The full water body of Avalanche needs to be seen from the dam side.

But what ever said and done, the place just begs to seen again!

No Problem. Always welcomed....

I am thinking I should plan one more trip with bigger gang this December and must visit all places surrounding these lakes. I guess staying in Red Hills and then exploring is best option.

@travel_newbie: Do you have any travelogue where you have posted all the details on places you visited, etc?

Devraj, wonderful narration.
Liked the pics in the post 26, especially "021" which has the night shot of a town. Was it Coonor? and what is that line of lights crossing the city in between?
Again amazing capture from the camera. There's so many place around Ooty and Coonor to visit, looks like have to plan for another one.

Nice travelogue - thanks for sharing with us. I usually stay @ Sherlock when I am in Ooty, mainly for its lawn with splendid views.

Have stayed at Red Hills, but haven't gone down to the lakes yet. Will do so next time. Thanks for the info on how to get permissions for Upper Bhavani.

The comparison of the lake could not have been better. Excellent.
I guess ooty is worth the visit just for this lake. Its beautiful.

This lake certainly looks like one of the best in the south.

I have mentioned the details in 1st post:
After that our mission was to get Avalanche permission. I was searching for Forest Office and landed at Tourist Info center at Charring Cross. They called up the office and let me know that permission is easily available. I need to meet DFO - South division @ Forest Office only between 4-5PM. I submitted a written application with car details and my ID details with my ID zerox. Permission was given in no time for Avalanchee and Upper Bhavani. Here is Location of the office for fellow BHPians to find it easily: 11.412583,76.704996 - Google Maps

I was there beginning June and was allowed inside both places without any prior permission obtained. I do not know if this is the norm though, better to take precautions and do as Devrajman suggests.

thank you devrajman & kannan666B

Last time the guy at checkpost didn't allow us to get past the gate. So this we want to get the permission prior and go there.

Last time when I tried to drive through the checkpost I was not allowed, luckily a state road transport bus trundled along, so I parked the car and we boarded the bus and bought tickets till the terminus at the power house, the bus was to return in half an hour, so got a half hour to spend time looking around and boarded the same bus back to the car, no permissions or fees .

Im going again to Ooty during 3rd week of August!!

Booked the place (fortune retreats) opposite to the place I stayed last time (Delightz Inn):
http://www.fortuneholidays.com/

Need to create a list of places to visit for this time. Hope to see good water levels in dams/waterfalls/lakes/etc.

Planning to spend a whole day around Emerald dam. Any inputs guys.

Sad to see the water level go down so much. Have been there so many times. Looks like the weak monsoon is really taking its toll. Not forgetting Global warming! Can imagine what the summer situation of water will be.
