Excellent one in fact this TL is as good as it can get. BTW do you know:-
1. Nako monastery is older than TABO.
2. The confluence of Satluj and Spiti is before you start on the kazigs at Khab.

Rest are immaterial. Hope you enjoyed it in the land of GODS.

BTW, I'd been told by a Kinnauri that the alternate road to Malling Nallah has become functional and one doesn't need to pass through the landslide prone area anymore. Did you get a chance to inquire about any such route on your travel?
Thank you.
I am little confused about alternate road. I did asked the hotel guy about the alternate road, didn't get a proper answer. But, yes that road is functional. Looking at few pictures of old Mailing Nallah road, I doubt I took the new alternate road

Thank you sir.
I did know that Nako monastery is more thousand year old, but had no idea that it is older than Tabo. I guess most of the monasteries in Spiti are around thousand years old Also, I didn't went inside of Nako monastery, it's only after you pointed out I made a little search on net about it, and now I feel missed something out there. Hope I will cover it up next time I go there.

Thank you again for correcting me. That confluence is of Spiti and Pari Chu at Sumdo. Sorry, for wrong notation. I wish if I can edit that post.
*Mods: Is it possible to correct?

Smile Kaza & Drive to Kibber

Good Morning Kaza

What a lovely morning after yesterdays cloudy evening!

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_2973.jpg

Today, my plan is roam around Kaza. First I will be going to Kibber, Key Monastery. And then will go to Langza and Komic, the highest village in the world.

Yesterday, I asked Deepak (the hotel attendent) to find someone whom I can take along. A monk (yes, again), Kishan ready to accompany me for the day. Ironically, he is also on leave!

It's 8:15am when I start my journey. I am planning to have breakfast at Kibber.

The weather just awesome today.

The bridge which leads to Manali from Kaza. The road to Kibber goes straight.

At around 9:20am we arrived at Kibber. That's me posing just at the milestone!

Restaurants are still closed. There is road on the right which steeply goes up. Being adventurous I tried some climbing. After moving around 300metres I gave up and parked the car. A view from cark parking!

Kibber Village to follow..

Cheers.

Amazing!
In 2009 - we turned around at this Kibber board. While driving towards Kibber from Kaaza, the left side gives you amazing differences and the valley with quite a lot of colour contrasts. Was with HVK in his scorp that time.

I guess the place is calling me back. Much more than the Leh loop, this is one loop that had amazed me a lot.

Thanks for the pictures and bringing back the sweet memories.

Great shots, especially "Key" Monastry is looking awesome. Weather changes dramatically at these places and clear blue skies add to the wonderful landscape.
Thanks for sharing. Your pictures reminds me of my trip in Sept' 2007. Perhaps time to go back again.

Thumbs up Kibber

Kibber Village

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3024.jpg

Kibber was considered as highest motorable village of Asia few years back. Now that place is taken by Komic, as highest village in the world! As per GPS, Kibber is situated at an altitude of 4178metres.

From car parking spot I have hike up a few hundred meters to the Monastery.

A view from monastery, can you see my gypsy parked on the corner?

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_2993.jpg

Kibber village and Kaza-Kibber road

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_2994.jpg

Villagers are constructing a new monastery building. The reinforcement are made up of concrete and mud-bricks are used for walls. I wonder what will happen if something like cloud burst or heavy downpours happen! Touchwood, I donít want something like that to happen.

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3019.jpg

Few concrete bricks

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_2995.jpg

Pea cultivation is the main source of income in Kibber.

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_2997.jpg

The lama with me was quite disappointed about the education of the girls. Here, the girls studies to higher secondary; thereafter there is no institution in Spiti to carry it on beyond that. Either they have to go to Shimla or stop their studies. And parents were not so comfortable in sending their girls away, so thatís end of their student life and they start working the field.

Two girls were working in field

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3017.jpg

I met this cheerful lady, while we were hiking up. She is going up the hills and besides her the monk, Kishan who accompanied me, I nicked him as ďthe Yo monk!Ē

Horns of Mountain deers

A horse is grazing up the hills. I want to get a few pictures of him, when the yo monk saw the horse is tied to a rope, he gone further up and tried to control him.

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3004.jpg

The horse turned out to be quite cooperative!

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3005.jpg

I also got a chance to pose with him!

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3009.jpg

We started to feel the effect of elevation, as we climbed up. Shortage of oxygen gave me little headache!

The road, when I see these pictures now, I envy myself for driving on these roads!

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3020.jpg

At around 10am we came back to the car, itís time for breakfast. Unfortunately all the restaurant were closed and we decided to come back to Kaza after visiting Key Monastery and have brunch there.

I took a lots of photos of landscape on the rear view, and I liked them too.

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3026.jpg

After a small photo-session we started our journey to Key monastery at 10:05am.

The two gypsies made it to Kibber!

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3029.jpg

Key Monastery to follow. Keep tuned!

Cheers!

Default Key Monastery!

Key Monastery!

First encounter with ice! I didnít even imagine that the ice might look as dark as a rock, so at first glance I thought it as a big rock beneath the bridge.

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3030.jpg

A closer look of the ice sheet!

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3031.jpg

The rock chips lying near bridge were very yellowish! It reminded me of the sulfide ores (which are very poisonous!). I doubt whether these rocks also got sulfide content!

Yo Lama posing with Zuki!

A connecting road from Kibber which goes up to a village. I wished to go up, but locals said the road is not functional.

Key Monastery, this is the largest monastery of Spiti, and it is also more than thousand years old

Beautiful Spiti Valley, the sky is inkiest blue today

After parking the car outside the monastery, we walked up. It was little steep and I can feel I lost stamina over the years! Entry to Key Monastery

Finally a painting on the gompa wall captured by lens!

Inside the gompa!

We decided to take a unconventional way to get out of the gompa. Through the living quarters of monks and it end up climbing down some steep slope.

Another view of Key Monastery

At around 11:00 am we started our back journey to Kaza for brunch, we are starving by now! What a view!

Once again thukpa on my plate! But this time itís a mutton thukpa. Till now I had a impression that all the monks are vegetarian, but monks over there eat non-veg too!

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3075.jpg

By 12oíclock we finished off our lunch and got ready for our next destination: Kaumik/Komic: the highest motorable village in the world

Default Drive to the highest village in the world!

While I was having my thukpa, Kishan (Mr. Yo Monk) got one friend who also wished to travel with us. He is also in vacation, and getting bored in the Kaza gompa! By 12 we started for Komic. It would be my the last drive in the Spiti valley, suddenly I started to feel bad that my journey is coming to an end!

By now, Kishan ease up with my DSLR and I was happy to give him the chance of clicking random pictures, who knows he might come out with some wonders!

Few clicks of him, as a precaution of getting well focused pictures I already put in aperture priority mode with small aperture, before handing over to him.

Spiti valley continued to amaze me!

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3079.jpg

Where does this road goes!

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3082.jpg

The road to Komic comes on the Kaza-Kibber road at around 2kms from Kaza. There is incomplete gate which welcomes to the Komic. This road is completely dirt road, but there is not hump, also the landscape is more like a meadow, so very less chance of landslide.

I did take the camera from Kishan, whenever I feel something of interesting, ďwhy take chances!Ē

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3096.jpg

Gentle sloped mountain tops

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3104.jpg

After travelling few kilometers the road to Komic takes two diversion, the road the left goes to Langza village and then to Komic and the right one goes to Hikkim village than to Komic village. We took the left one, we will be doing Langza village > Komic > Hikkim.

Langza village.

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3107.jpg

The Langza village is situated at an altitude of 4350m above MSL. The main attraction of Langza village is the giant statue of Lord Buddha.

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3117.jpg

The statue was constructed in 2002 and completed by 2005 with the cost of 11lakhs.

Lamas in front of the Statue.

Walking back to the car.

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3127.jpg

There was no one in the monastery, as everybody as gone to work.

Zuki all set to go to the highest village!

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3135.jpg

By 1:00pm we left Langza and headed to Komic.

Snow on the road!

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3137.jpg

An encounter with Himalayan Hunks!

We come across a group of mountain horse, they just standing on the road. I immediately took over the camera and took a few pics, I afraid if I go near they might run away and I will miss the shot.

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3148.jpg

As I drove near to them, I kept on pressing shutter with one hand. Luckily 2-3 of them decided to wait and pose for me!

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3163.jpg

At around 1:30 we arrived at Komic. Here itís the same, the gompa is closed!

Komic village: the highest village in the world (4515m)

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3181.jpg

There is another monastery which is around 5kms from Komic, but that road is not functional yet.

The lamas of the monastery, offered me a cup of tea! Komic through a sunglass!

Lamas!

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3195.jpg

After spending around 45mins in Komic, we started our journey back to Kaza. This time we took the road via Hikkim, this road starts from the monastery.

Hikkim Village, villagers working in the field!

Compared to Langza-Komic road, this road is more windy and steep, also lots of loose rock debris lying on the road.

A windy road to Kaza

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-img_3254.jpg

At around 3:45pm we arrived at Kaza. My jerry-can leaked, so I went to market to buy a new jerry can, bought a 20litre one, I just hope it wonít leak this time. I have to fill up the tank today before 6pm, so I went to Petrol pump and filled the tank full and 15litre more in the jerry-can. It should be enough for Pin-valley and then back to Powari. A car wash must now, inside is full of dust and sand also the car is looking very dirty. I immediately headed to car washing station is around 6kms from Kaza. It took me almost 3hrs to get the car washed and come back to hotel, but the gypsy is looking Smarter now.

"Alone!!! You're Kidding!" A Gypsy week to Spiti Valley-photo0117.jpg

Lots of calculations going in my mind now. Tomorrow if I go to Pin Valley, it will be tough to get Chitkul. I have to stay either in Tabo or Nako, which I donít want, already spent a night there! And if I donít get to Chitkul, I will be a day late. In full of confusion, I hit the bed. Whatever be my decision, I will try to leave early tomorrow.

Cheers!

Hi Rajiv, those lights are just showoff. Don't have any significant value addition to visibility. I don't know the makes of those, I have to check, but right now I am out of station, if you want I will PM you later.

My apology to all, who are following this TL, for not being able update further. These days I am working on very slow network in the deserts of Rajasthan, which don't allow me to upload photo. I will finish it off once I get back to good network.

Hriday, I think this is a fantastic TV and the pictures are simply superb. You have guts, my friend, to do this all alone (though you did pick up some friends along the way).

You have forced my arm—I have to do this trip now...
