Day 01 - October 15, 2010
Thenmala - Poovar

We stopped by the old 13 Arch Bridge (Pathimoonnu Kannara Palam). This is a very beautiful view and you must be in person there to enjoy it. This bridge is often the fancy of all photographic guys. I have seen many pictures of this bridge in many angles and it all looks good. Some attempts from my side

We finally reached Thenmala Dam by 15:30PM. Walked in the dam site and over the Dam. Stopped by to check the ECO Tourism activities. They are quite interesting. Lot of options. Keeping that for another time now. Please find all the details here THENMALA ECO TOURISM

Finally by 16:30PM decided to drive towards Poovar. But I wanted to drive through another beautiful route. Instead of continuing towards Punalur Kottarakkara Trivandrum route (which we had taken on return journey in trip 2), I wanted to try Thenmala - Madathara - Nedumangad - Peroorkada - Sasthamangalam - Edapazhanji - Papanamcode - Balaramapuram - Nellimoodu - Kanjiramkulam - Poovar Route.

Finally reached Poovar Island Resort's boat jetty by 20:00PM. A boat came to pick us up, and it was an amazing journey in the night through the back waters to the resort. We could see lots of fisherman putting their nets and also many rowing their boats with the catch.

The guest relationship manager himself recieved us at the resort entrance. Took us to a beautifully done room. After a quick shower and some phone calls we hit the restaurant of the resort for some great Kerala fish food.

I was surprised to see the amount of foriegner crowd in the resort. I could not but keep thinking - Is poovar that beautiful that its fame had travelled across the seas?

Day 02 - October 16, 2010
Poovar

Like a child filled with curiosity to see for myself what the place was, I woke up early and walked out of the room.

I was greeted with this view.

It was really out of this world. I was at a loss of words. I kept wondering how in the whole world did I miss this beauty which was just 50km away from a place I lived for over 24 years!

Dear Laluks,

Excellent as usual, your travelogues make one enjoy the same beautiful experiences you had and thats the hallmark of a great author.

A big thumps to your family - this is one great "travel-freak" family. We were wondering how you manage to start at 12:00am!

Loved your experiments with the filter. That picture of NH-7 looks great.

Have you been to Kumarakom-Aleppy? How would you rate Poovar compared to these?

Regards

VW

Brilliant photos of a wonderful place. Thanks for sharing this Laluks.

"Muttathe mullakku manamilla" (the jasmine flowers of our courtyard has no fragrance). "Ghar ki murgi dal barabar".

Many of us never realize the beauty of our own backyard.

Thanks VW

Yes, I have been to Kumarakom and Alleppey. I have never written about it. I read Arundhati Roy's God of Small Things once and went in search of it to her place Aymenum. Kumarakom was done along with that. Small puddle of water, the old scissor filter advertisement boards, the pickle advertisements, etc etc .The place ceases to change over years.

Coming to your query, both Kumarakom, Alleppey and Poovar have a different charm. I would not want to compare. Kumarakom has a lot of birds in season and it will interesting to a birder. The vast back waters are very nice to see. You can get lost looking at it to eternity.

Alleppey has a beach and lot of backwaters too. Here again the lazy house boat ride, the Nehru Boat race, etc..still keep its charm.

Poovar is serene and not yet gone touristy like the first two. You can reach the resorts here by boat only. So you kind of get away from the crowd.

I reached back the room spell bound and the kids were already awake. I told them about what I saw, but their priority was a swim in the pool.

Niiicceee!! Probably my most favorite thread on T-Bhp as both my parents are from Poovar.

The resorts in that part are surprisingly awesome. But I never had a chance to stay at a resort as my ancestral house is in Poovar and my folks have a house about 1km away from the Poovar bus stand on the the way to Kovalam (where my trusty ol' Baleno is sitting and gathering dust in a locked garage).

Keep the photos coming!

We went to the Boat Jetty. Last day since we arrived late, we had no orientation how the place looked like. I must admit the beauty really increases if you land up in this place in the night and wait till sunrise to feel where you are.

We booked a row boat for exploring the back waters in the evening. It was almost 12:30PM by then, we decided to head for lunch. Had a lot of variety in the buffet, and had a decent fill.

After lunch we walked again for a while to burn the calories

We saw a carpet of red flowers.
