I have applied for this year KMY and really hope I get selected.
I have gathered a lot of very useful information from this thread.

One tiny detail - were there any washing facilities at any of the places of stay? Otherwise one is expected to carry like 28 pairs of innerwear?

Lots of washing places. Drying them is the issue.

I remember at one place it was raining so hard and cold, the only place to dry was over a wood fire in the kitchen.

The next day we all smelt of charcoal.

The luxe life. I miss it.

Yes. Every rest place has clean washrooms and hot water for bathing and washing. However, in china side, you may face some problem specially during the 3 day kailash parikrama.

Default Re: When I Went Walking To Tibet - Kailash Mansarovar Yatra-2011

Today I got an SMS that my name is wait-listed for the KMY-2017.

I also got 745 emails to as many people, informing them that they are all wait-listed.
They just used some sort of system generated email-merge to send emails. I am unhappy to see the names, email IDs and mobile phone numbers of all the wait-listed people being to sent to all. They should have programmed the system to send only the relevant email to each person. Email IDs and Mobile phone numbers are confidential information and should be treated as such.

The email also urges each wait-listed person to pay up the advance of Rs.5000/- and that it is non-refundable in case selected. Is this payment to be made right now? No where in the instructions did they mention that advance need to be paid so much in advance. The last date for payment is 14th April - just a week away.
I hope they properly refund it in case not selected.

When I clicked the payment link, it opens a web page asking username and password. The registration process asks Passport number and Date-of-birth only - never any username and password. Anybody knows where to get the username and password? (I tried passport number and date-of-birth but it does not work)

Edit : After some attempts it worked - a different screen appeared asking passport number and DOB. Completed the payment.

I sent an email to KMY team but not sure whether they will respond or when they will respond. If any Team-bhp member knows the solution to this puzzles - please kindly help.
Edit : Ignore my request for help.

Hi Kavuri. My wife and I were inspired by this wonderful Travelogue to apply for the KM Yatra and were fortunate to be a part of KMY 2014 - 10th Batch.

I am sure you will get a Confirmation of your Yatra. I have heard that virtually all wait-listed people are accommodated finally, because there are so many dropouts. A few wait-listed people who I know have got a call just a week before the Yatra, asking whether they can join the next batch! So be ready and start walking in preparation for the Yatra. It is indeed a wonderful experience!

I am based in Hyderabad, so if you wish to talk to me, please feel free to PM me and I will give you my address / contact details.

If there are any members of Team-BHP in this year's KMY, it would be good to know so we can have a Team-BHP meet at Mansarovar!

Thank you!! Regarding washing facilities, as most of the others have pointed out, that would be the least of your bother. I remember doing my washing at 1. Gujrati Samaj (last day), 2. Gunji (onwards and return journey) 3. Taklakot (before and after parikrama). All these places have enough water and the atmosphere is dry so the clothes will dry up fast

Usually those who are short listed end up getting selected in one batch or the other. So if you have sent your initial deposit, I would suggest, start preparing for the trip. Because if you happen to be in the first couple of the batches, you wouldnt have much time left!!

Glad to inform that I got a phone call followed by email from MOEA that I am now selected for Batch 12 which gathers in Delhi on July 22nd. That leaves me 2 months exactly - enough to go through this travalogue again and prepare well. I am now hoping I will not have any health issues to get stopped during the health screening.

Varthakavi garu, I will get in touch with you in second week of June.

When I Went Walking To Tibet - Kailash Mansarovar Yatra-2016

It was not windy but it was cold, no rain no snow, yet shivering. the fingers and toes were numb and I could hardly feel them, We were extremely lucky.

Deky's instructions were followed to the T, however you can never be fully prepared for this trip.

Deky ki Kahaani Meri Zubaani, KMY 2016....coming up.

Bike leke jayega kya ? was the question everyone asked me when I said that I am going for KMY 2016.
Such is the awareness of this pilgrimage supposed to the holiest of all for all Hindus.
And this coming from fairly educated folks.

Had read Deky's travelogues umpteem times (Both of them) and made up my mind to apply for 2016.
2015 solo bike trip to Ladakh was cut short in Ramban because of the floods in Kashmir that year.
So this was it, the trip of a lifetime. No bike No car.

I had been following the updates on the MEA website regularly and registered myself as soon as the registrations were open.
I was selected for Batch 16 via Lipulekh Pass, yatra starting Aug 3 and ending Aug 28. New Delhi to New Delhi.

Yatris confirm their bookings by sending a DD of Rs. 5000/- in favour of Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN).

I received confirmation on May 6, 2016 and confirmed my booking immediately.

I did a private medical checkup too, just to ensure that I was fit enough for the yatra.

"Exercising is one big part of preparation for this trip as this route involves a lot of stamina and also a lot of will power. Also there are 2 strict medical tests that are held en-route, so best is to know your body and its weaknesses beforehand and try to overcome it to avoid disappointment at final stages. Smokers should try and quit smoking, well I say try as I myself could not give up. Those suffering from major illnesses of the lungs or the heart or any other are advised best not to undertake this journey. No reason I believe is superior than your health." - Deky

Deky has covered all the points in detail so will not harp too much on them. The costs have slightly increased, and the same is available on KMY website.

Our Itinerary was slightly different as below, a few of us also went to Pataal Bhuvaneshwar from Pithoragarh and rejoined :-

Day 1: Delhi- Medical tests at Delhi Heart and Lung Institute (DHLI) & Passport collection
Day 2: Delhi Second medical test at Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the results
Day 3: Delhi Briefing at MEA, Visa Collection, Foreign Exchange, KMVN payments
Day 4: Delhi to Almora by bus
Day 5: Almora to Dharchula by bus
Day 6: Dharchula to Pangla By jeeps - Pangla to Sirkha by foot/ pony (Narayan Ashram could not be done since there was a landslide enroute)
Day 7: Sirkha to Gala by foot
Day 8: Gala to Budhi by foot
Day 9: Budhi to Gunji
Day 10: Gunji Stay for high altitude medical
Day 11: Gunji to Nabhidhang
Day 12: Nabhidhang to Taklakote (Tibet)
Day 13: Taklakote Stay for immigration and foreign exchange
Day 14: Taklakote to Darchen by bus
Day 15: Darchen To Derapukh (Kailash Parikrama)
Day 16: Derapukh to Zutulpukh (Kailash Parikrama)
Day 17: Zutulpukh to Darchen (Kailash Parikrama)
Day 18: Darchen to Trugho Gompa by bus ( on Mansarovar Banks)
Day 19: Trugho Gompa havan and holy dip
Day 20: Trugho Gompa to Taklakote by bus (completing Mansarovar parikrama)
Day 21: Taklakote Stay
Day 22: Taklakote to Gunji

Day 24: Budhi to Dharchula
Day 25: Dharchula to Pitthoragarh by bus

Things to keep in mind, reiterating what Deky has mentioned already and adding some of my own.

1. Wear proper shoes for trekking
2. Carry ear plugs (To block out the snoring)
3. Portable Bidet
4. Walking Stick (KMY provides wooden ones)
5. Descending is more difficult than ascending

Adding pictures clicked last year so as to provide the current conditions.

I have been selected for 18th Batch of KMY2017. Got a phone call a few days back and confirmation email today. Need to report to Delhi on 15th Aug (independence day). SKAVURI - Hope you had a pleasant yatra and you enjoyed the whole experience. Do write in your experience. Was there a lot of rain during your yatra?
