seems like a crack that has lead to the structural failure. Doesnt seem to be due to the fatigue/strain. But the region of breakage seems very perfect, as if some one has used a saw and cut it thoroughly. Would love to be bring it under microscope to analyse more on the failed portion to see how it sheared and the microscopic cores have disintegrated before i get busted for getting too technical i stop!

A few clarifications:

Pangong Lake or Tso - is of some 30 kms length in India, and the first point (also the most popular) which you reach from Leh is Lukung, which has a couple of tent camps. Further along the shore is Spangimik which has cheap homestays and also a couple of resorts. JKSRTC bus from Leh runs till here and until the year 2010, the road beyond was restricted to civilians. If you drive along the Lake, you will reach Man and then the Merak village. You have to show your permits at Merak check post and no foreigners are allowed beyond this point.

Tso Moriri Lake or Karzok - Karzok is the village - and end of the road - on the banks of the Tso Moriri Lake, and the only place where you have some tent resorts, cheap lodges & homestays. You are also not allowed to camp out anywhere except at Karzok.

Tso Kiagar & Tso Kar - On your way to Tso M via Mahe, you are pardoned for thinking that the Lake you see when you descend from the high pass of Namshang la is the Tso M itself - but no, it is the small Tso Kiagar Lake that you see first. The "road" goes around the Lake to the south-west and goes behind the mountains circling the Tso Kiagar to get to Tso Moriri Lake. Tso Kar is on the other route (via Debring) and is a dry salt lake bed for most part, hardly scenic, but teeming with Kijangs and bird life.

Highest Motorable road in the world - while it is said that there are roads higher than those in Ladakh, the Khardung la is considered as the Highest Motorable road in the world. This is on the road from Leh to Nubra Valley and hardly 2 hours drive, and any car can go to Khardung la. However, the highest Motorable road in India itself is the Marisimik la which is very close to Lukung (off Pangong Lake). But this is one for the toughest 4WD car only, and the drive itself is not meant for the faint-hearted.

Nubra Valley Triangle - If you go into Nubra Valley and want to go to Pangong Lake next, there is no need to return to Leh as long as you are prepared to have a long day's drive, have enough fuel in your tank (and in extra cans) and are OK with some bad roads and absolutely no support en route. That is the Leh-Khardung la-Khalasar-Diskit (Nubra Valley)-Khalasar-Wari la-Sakti-Karu-Leh triangle. If you take this route from Diskit, you can go to Pangong directly from Sakti via Chang la & Tangtse.

Chumathang Valley Triangle - This is the circuit for Tso Moriri Lake. You can go on the following route plan: Leh-Karu-Upshi-Mahe-Puga Sumdo-Tso Kiagar-Tso Moriri (Karzok)-Tso Kiagar-Puga Sumdo-Tso Kar-Debring-Tanglang la-Upshi-Karu-Leh. The route via Mahe runs along the River Indus (great riverscapes) and the route via Tso Kar is rugged, has lots of sulphur & salt deposits & wildlife sightings, besides taking you up 2 high passes too. And if you are doing a Leh-Tso Moriri-Manli run, then you can go on from Debring to Pang & Sarchu.

Tso Moriri from Manali or Leh? - Tso M is a detour off the Manali-Leh road and it makes a lot of sense to cover it when you are on your way to/ from Leh from/ to Manali because it will save you 2 days of drive ex-Leh since the first sector from Leh-Upshi/Debring is common. However, it is not feasible to do it when coming from Manali - because you need a permit that is issued only from Leh. Therefore, it is best to do Tso M when you are driving from Leh to Manali (Leh-Manali road) and not vice versa. BTW, the permit is checked just outside Karzok Village and you can travel along the bank of the Lake for almost 10 kms before reaching there, but I doubt f you will be allowed through the CP without the permit. Further, if you choose to return via Mahe, your permit will be checked at both Mahe & Upshi.

Road to the borders - Turtuk is just 12 kms short of the border and there are many side roads going off to border positions. After Khalasar, the road via Sumur & Panamik goes to Siachen Glacier. All these are POK border. South of this are all Chinese border areas. Beyond Marisimk la are border positions. You are never far from the border in the Pangong Lake-Chushul-Tsaga road, and you are driving along the border from Chushul onwards towards Tsaga. Loma is an important junction from where roads to Fukche & Demchok branch off - these are hot spots which have been seeing Chinese incursions. Hanle is quite far off from the border, but if you go to Chumur you are almost right at the Chinese border, and the Tso M Lake is also quite close to the border too.

Foreigners not permitted - Being sensitive border areas, no foreigners are permitted in the Merak-Chushul-Tsaga-Loma-Hanle-Chumur/Nyoma-Mahe circuit.

I swear I would never go back in here (Nomadic Tent Camps). Both the times when I stayed here, it was quite uncomfortable due to the cold chilling winds. The wind creeps into the tent making the stay very uncomfortable.

More over this time their attitude was very step motherly and why should I take care of their economy. Thank goodness choices are there outside. There are places which have proper brick rooms. You might want to chose those!

I do not recommend this place anymore on both these counts.
