Day 20
31st August 2011
Karzok - Debring - Key Long

Look at this!! Road goes straight. The army camp on its side claims the road and forces the poor travellors into a broken path around it. Heights!!!

Furious pace meant that Lalu was the first on the spot when there was a Kijang crossing, scare a herd of Ibex (es), get some shot with the Scorpio gear in neutral and also shoot the convoy far away!

But that day - which day does not have an excuse - we had to (a) reach Keylong before the night, (b) refuel for the next day before the Tandi petrol pump closed at 7-8 pm, and (c) search for distilled water for my failed battery! You see, I had 4 excuses to floor the pedal, not just one which was to drive fast and get to my destination faster!

Yes. As they say in management parlance, The speed of the Engine is the speed of the Train.

If I am not mistaken, this is one of the Zing Zing bar water crossings which is quite a treacherous one. Even when we left on our trip, this one was in rage overflowing with high velocity across the road preventing any traffic from late afternoon onwards.

Here is a video I found on youtube which shows a mild avatar of the water crossing, although when we went through it was benign!

4WD Bolero Stinger (Bangalore/Calicut) was with us from Delhi till Kaza. They had a shorter drive program with a plan to break away and return from Leh on Aug 22 itself. But with the road blockade ahead of Kaza - which also detained us for 3 days there - they decided to go ahead, camped out just where the road was closed (first at Losar, then at Chhatru) and decided to return to the plains via Manali. The Bolero was also suffering from a weak fuel pump which was making it difficult for them to power their way up the steep ascents, perhaps why they also felt it would face difficulties in the higher altitudes too!

With them went 4 team members out of the original team

The photo is not of Zing Zing Bar, this the crossing before Keylong (towards Manali). It is quite tame and acts as a warm up for those headed towards Leh. The Zing Zing Bar crossing is a lot harder, mainly for the bikers. For cars, if you wait and watch a couple of the Innovas/trucks/Scropios cross it you can make out a clear line that runs straight through the middle, just gun it and you'll make it across in one go.

For the bikes the current is very strong in the middle and if you lose momentum you'll have to be pushed out. After we'd crossed I'd gone in to help a bunch of bikers from Nasik who were having trouble and I fell butt-first into the water while pushing out one of the bikes. Thankfully, no damage was done and we had a good laugh about it and I also unintentionally mooned B-La while changing out of my wet clothes behind the car!

No, Lalu's photo is between Baralachala & Darcha and I distinctly remember this to be 1 of 3 water crossings (the less malignant one) of them all. The video which I got from youtube also names itself as being from Zingzingbar. I rechecked my log book and teh sequence of photos - yes, this is not the Zingzing bar one - where there is a proper bridge now - but this one is just after Patseo army camp.

What you are probably referring to is the water crossing near Stingri and also the one just before Keylong bypass which are also very violent. We passed both those points after dark.

During the year 2009, one of the 3 bridges pictured below was broken and we had to drive on the river bed to cross over from Darcha village (RHS) to the Darcha check post (LHS) on our way to Keylong/Manali (towards LHS). This year luckily, all bridges were complete. However, I found trucks still banned from using the third LHS bridge (old, rickety, non-load bearing, weak, I guess) and they still had to wade through the water to get across.

I remember one of our friends 2 years ago got to the RHS and could not cross over because it was beyond 8 pm and the water flow was very strong and deep too.

Ladakh surely is an exciting drive!

We reached Tandi Petrol Pump by 19:30 hours. Filled all our machines and moved on towards the HPTDC hotel at Key Long. On the way got the last distilled water bottle available at Key Long and filled up HVK Scorpio's battery.

Had nice hot dinner and retired to bed. A great trip to Ladakh has thus ended. Lot of good moments and great convoy drive. It was 20 days of bliss.

The next day for us was the greatest challenge of it all. We were heading to Sach pass. Glenn had warned us if you don't care for your life nor your car take that route. It kind of echoed in all our minds. But hey, we are still going. And believe it or not Mumbai roadsters too wants to drive their Swifts up there. Indeed anxious day ahead.

------------

PS: I will be busy for the next two weeks and I may not be able to post the account of Sach pass (Day 21) before that. I would request the team to go ahead with the other posts till then.
