Actually, thats a view of Baltal. The valley that leads to amarnath goes off to the left from that valley in the picture. Thats the sind river down there that goes through sonmarg on to join the jehlum. At the point where this picture is taken, Zoji La has already been left behind. Zoji La is quite innocuous and presents no spectacular views.

incidentally, that road in that picture is where I was almost washed off the mountain side. Its so cute to see that road looking so benign and harmless in the late summer. When they say that Zoji La has opened, they mean that this road has been opened. It gets over 100foot snow accumulation, and when the melting starts, especially when encouraged by spring rains, that road turns into a treacherous muddy mess with raging torrents of meltwater gashing across it.

or at least it used to. I haven't been there in early may since 1991. But as I mentioned earlier, I've been trapped at Zoji La by a blizzard as late as July.

Yeah i remember them working on the interlocking tiles even when i crossed Zo La in 2009. At that time only the straight stretch (max 300mtrs) in front of the checkpost was covered with these.

@JC - Whats the current progress?

Beautiful Morning in Sonmarg

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-kargil-srinagar-3044.jpg

We had breakfast in a restaurant opposite to this. Forgot the name.

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-kargil-srinagar-3045.jpg

We were the first vehicles to reach Sonmarg that morning. Look at the empty roads and closed shops.
That's Tadek and Jay walking around and clicking pics.

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-kargil-srinagar-3047.jpg

IPHE-B team, Baby Alto & Discovery Bolero.

Thats the JKTDC Resort/Guest House, Sonmarg

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-kargil-srinagar-3050.jpg

Meanwhile we had and encounter!! with few Army officers. The KL Registration of Discovery Bolero attracted attention of some commandos patrolling there. They came to us to find out more details.

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-kargil-srinagar-3051.jpg

Surprisingly all of them were from Kerala.Which was very surprising for Tadek. He talked to them about his previous trips to kerala and his experiences.

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-kargil-srinagar-3052.jpg

Tadek called it "Encounter with Malayalam Commandos" in SonMarg! HeHe. Soon we said bye to those brave warriors and proceeded. In this pic Baby Alto looks still ok after a solo drive from Leh for 12 hours. Tadek is still going strong. I am looking like a zombey, dead tired since I did most of the driving in the night. Nobin took rest and slept for a while so he is looking fresh aswell.

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-kargil-srinagar-3053.jpg

Intial plan was to stay in Sonmarg. But then we all had some sleep inside the cars on the way and we were feeling ok and not so tired. So we decided to proceed and if required we will look for a hotel in Srinagar and stay there.

By 7:00 AM we left Sonmarg. Roads were still empty. And we encountered more sheperds and sheeps on the way.

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-kargil-srinagar-3054.jpg

Electric power lines- we were seeing them after long time.

Vehicles also started performing better. Thanks to lower altitudes.

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-kargil-srinagar-3062.jpg

We were picking up speed. Some good roads finally and were trying to reach Srinagar at the earliest.

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-kargil-srinagar-3076.jpg

Traffic increased tremendously as we were approaching Srinagar. So then there was again a change in plan.

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-kargil-srinagar-3077.jpg

Eventhough we had plans to visit Srinagar to see the Dal Lake and other tourist attractions. We changed our mind and decided to keep it for our next Expedition since we were running short of time.
So we decided to take Srinagar bypass

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-kargil-srinagar-3079.jpg

Jammu is another 330kms!! We are not going to Jammu.... but finally we ended up going to Jammu! That is another story!!

993km in 18 hours?? Surely you're kidding, Mr. Google!!!

this surely was one EPIC drive for me! never driven for such a long stretch - by distance or by time. When the GPS stopped at Pathankot, we'd taken more than what Google seems to be suggesting.. MUCH MORE!! (more on that later)

add to that the low speeds due to a rattly steering rack + not batting an eyelid from the morning of 1st September. The intention of the Drass pit-stop was a power nap.. but I was on facebook telling the world where I'd landed!! No pictures, but we'd stopped right in front of the board claiming Drass to be the 2nd coldest inhabited place on earth!

Sonamarg was a treat to our parched eyes; after seeing the browns of Ladakh for so many days, even a little bit of green looks magical! I still remember the trainees at the HAWS (High Altitude Warfare School) running with their backpacks and weaponry on the beautiful slopes of Sonamarg. Still etched in my memory is the large writing on the wall which read "Madras Sappers" - the same regiment that defended ZojiLa from Pakistan in 1948 (converting a mule-track into a jeepable track).

Total respect for these awesome people that defend our borders.

(no pictures. sorry junta!)

Finally we stopped at a road side tyre mechanic in Srinagar byepass and he found the culprit! This was daunting us since last 4 days and cant belive we were driving with this from Hanle!
Also look the condition of the tyre- This is a fairly new Maxxis Bravo HT 760 Tyres. Did a big mistake by coming to Himalyas with HT tyres :(

Check out the rear leaf springs - I had added an extra leaf before the Expedition. For Extra height and for carrying more load. And look at it now. Almost flat! The campering is almost gone. Thanks to treacherous Himalayan roads

Its almost midday and Udhampur is still long way to go. Plus we have the Jawahar Tunnel to cross.
The heat was making us more tired. Because we got used to the cool Himalayan days.
But we continued...

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-kargil-patnitop-4048.jpg

Since we deiced not to halt at Srinagar, The next option was to reach Patnitop and stay there for the night.

HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-kargil-patnitop-4049.jpg

I said Thank God after 132 kms, I can take some rest and get some good sleep ( I am sure that was the same thing all us us were thinking at that time).
But that also didnt happen.
Couple of phone calls changed the plans again...
