Leh-Kargil via Batalik - 22Aug 2011

Apologies for disturbing the flow of the Sonmarg - Kargil section that BolBolero is writing about.

We had decided to drop the Swifts in Leh and take a ride with HVK and BolBolero for this sector because it was know that the Kargil Padum section is a FULL day rough terrain drive..no major obstacles but those small sharp stones all the way which irritate you because in a hatch one cant go fast not because of GC issues but because these small stones keep flying off hitting the under body and hence you become really slow (resulting in slowing down the entire team)

The road is perfectly doable for a hatch, just that one has to be patient and give it time.

A special thanks to HVK & BolBolero for giving us a ride during this section!!!

Looking back it was wise that we did so as it added to the variety. Personally for me this day added some more variety as i got the opportunity to drive the Alto in the Batalik sector in a aggressive timeline situation which emerged . I am sure HVK will agree to this.

As we wait for the others to catch up, a few things:

1. The road from Leh to Kargil via Batalik was very good, but lonely, without any traffic, no facilities, and apparently stciking to the actual LOC/ border.

2. You follow the River Indus till it leaves India and flows into Pakistan. Very rapid water flows here, great river rafting country, but no one is permitted to do so, I think.

3. We were lucky that we did not get into trouble with the Army for having got into civilian-restricted areas at Batalik.

4. The Nimmu-Chilling-Padum road (under construction) promises to be an exciting and short way to get into Zanskar Valley instead of going all the way around Kargil - but when it will be completed is anybody's guess. The River Zanskar that the road traced along its banks, is frozen during winter and the scene for the famous Chadar Trek. I believe rkbharat did the road on the "other" side, i.e. to the extent it is completed on the Padum-Chilling side, maybe he will tell us about it too.

5. No permits are required to go into Zanskar Valley, but foreigners are advised to carry their Passports at all times.

We should then with our GPS logs must look at the alignment of the road this side and the otherside on google maps to get a feel of the route HVK can you make one with the logs from your device and rkbharat's?

The one and a half hour spent at the memorial was a very emotional time for the four of us.

Looking all around these desolate surroundings, you can't help but wonder at the audacity of the Pakistani intruders and the courage of the Indian soldiers to drive them back. Batra Top, Rhino Horn, Tiger Hill, Pts:5100, 5353, 4700, 5060, 5140, 5025, Tololing were just names of places, we had read in the papers. Actually seeing them, was a humbling experience!

Bhimbhut Stone
HumbLeh'd II (Indo Polish Himalayan Expedition to Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh)-img_2739.jpg
The Legend:
This stone is associated with a Pandava legend during the period of their exile. It is situated about 5 kms from Drass town in a village called Bhimbat. As per legend this huge rock is actually the solidified body of the second Pandava Bhimsen (Bhima/ Bheem). The rock is perceived as a holy relic even by the Islamic population of the area. It is also believed that a childless woman consuming dust from the rock will be able to conceive.

BolBOlero, did you get a chance to go down to the actual stone - I believe it is 1-2 kms away from the road?

Of all places, this remote Dras Valley region of Ladakh is closely associated with the Mahabharata - a few kms away is the Draupudi Kund, which is purported to be the place were Draupudi had her last bath before she died. This appears to have been the trail which the Pandavas took on their way to heaven, Draupudi was the first to die, followed by Bhima. The resting places of the other 3 (except Yudhistra) who also died en route must also be somewhere in this region, though it looks like there are no identified spots, wonder where they are.

Is it the Drass region that is associated with the Mahabharata? I thought that the ascent to heaven was through the Swargrohini ranges, as the legend goes.

From Swargarohini - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia -

Quote:
Swargorhini derives it names from the Legends associated with that it's peaks forms the path to heaven that was followed by Pandavas, Draupadi & their Dog. According to Legends its believed that is only way one can go to heaven with human body itself.
Sorry for the Off Topic, folks!

Yes, that is what the UK legend is!
But how does one reconcile that with these 2 spots in Dras Valley - the Swargarohini and Dras region are quite far off from each other even as the crow flies. I have not found references to these 2 spots in Dras Valley anywhere else.

This is the photo of the Draupudi Kund - the photo is by SS_Traveller.

Exactly! Reconciling them is the problem - one in the Himalayas and one nearly in the Karakorams and far, far away from each other.

By the way, I believe you had Mahabharata and Ramayana drive plannings going on. How are they shaping up?

Well, nothing really is happening on that theme drive project beyond the initial research on identifying spots, and I guess it will happen within the next year or so.

We reached Kargil at around 1:45 pm. Had to to take a slight detour around town due to a procession taking place and the roads being closed. Luckily for us we could reach Hotel D'Zozila by taking the detour. Booked rooms for us and the rest of the IPHE team after a lot of haggling over the prices by JeepCaptain!

After a grand lunch in the hotel dining room and freshening up, we decide to go to the Kargil petrol Pump and tank up on diesel for the next days journey to Zanskar Valley.

Finally the JeepCaptain's Discovery Bolero arrives at around 8:30 pm. and meets us in the market itself. After a emotional reunion for JeepCaptain with NJ, TS & JP and introductions all around we head back to the hotel!

After freshening up, the first batch of IPHE team at dinner.

No we didn't!
In hindsight I/We should have taken the detour and visited both these places.
We did have a lot of time on our hands! Our loss totally!

This also is a good route to bypass Kargil town. Was the road good? Are there any sign boards where you take the left turn from the main road leading into Kargil town?

The Hotel D'Zojila is a nice hotel with lots of car parking - if he runs out of space in his own compound, you can park it inside the Maruti Service Centre opposite the hotel. Incidentally, also a good place to take your car up the ramp, conduct an underbody inspection and also do some repairs, if needed. In fact, this is where we left behind the "Baby" Alto as we left for Zanskar Valley the next day.

Hotel D'Zojila is also pretty rigid on pricing of rooms, but it is a pretty good hotel with clean rooms and good food. And it is in a quiet part of town, on the road to Zanskar Valley and close to the intersection of the Zanskar-Leh-Srinagar roads.
