Default Day 9 #5: The roads ahead

It was around 4pm we exited Luzern. We still had 4 hours of daylight left. But it was not really daylight, it was a mix of rain and grey. Nevertheless, we chose this spot as our lunch break

Due to the weather, traffic was quite thin, and we made good time

More scenery on the way. The weather was getting wetter, rather than clearer

From a viewpoint, we scanned the scenery. No blue anywhere. Not the perfect weather to be touring, but we had limited days in switzerland, and we had to make the most of them!

I was almost 5:30pm when we laded up on the north shore of lake Brienz. Brienz thun drive is supposed to be scenic, and this is what we intended to cover, rain or no rain

The drive, however was fantastic. This is a great driving road, with smooth curves and a nice 80kmph limit. Rain meant no traffic to slow us down

Its an early end of the day. Rain gets heavier, and we hope tomorrow will be a better day. For now its time to cook a nice heavy dinner, with lots of eier, and some bread and noodles.

Today was our 4th day here. A day full of rain. What will the 5th day bring? Rain or sunshine. We don't know, and we can't do anything about it either.

Tanveer: Lovely log and great photos. Looks like the rains were a web blanket? A little more sunshine would have been heavenly. But of course all year round, Switzerland has it's charm to a photographer like you.

Luzern pictures brought back memories for me, spent a couple of days there, did Mt. Titlis form there during my Europe tour. The lake and area around was great for a walk in the evening, it was one of the most crowded cities we passed there though by our standards it was deserted!! We saw the Lion Monument, it's set inside the back alleys, has lots of interesting history to it.

Default Day 9 GPS tracks

A view our drive - Elevation profile
Sonata Europa - 5 countries, 4000kms and 15 days-132430002509758p122.160.203.110.jpg

We drove 200kms today. Not quite a lot. Mostly through rain. Only saving grace. Excellent roads with no traffic!

Here is a map.
Sonata Europa - 5 countries, 4000kms and 15 days-20110904.jpg
We go to Luzern via the "green track". Its broken in pieces because of tunnels.
Coming back is via the north shore of the lakes.

We drive almost to thun, and then backtrack, and then at interlaken, at junction of lake Thun(left) and brienz(right), we go southwards to Stechelberg, our home base

Default Day 10 #1: Doom and Gloom

I did not need to watch TV. Or look at the weather forecast or webcams. The answer was out there. Zeus was angry, and he was going to screw this day as well.

Its 7:40am, and this is what Stechelberg looks like. We had kept this day to explore our valley, and visit a high alpine lake. But no such luck for the wicked

A plan had to be made. I had lots of gpx tracks pre-stored on GPS. Lots of options, but everywhere, we would get rain. We decided to go out anyways, and head towards Jaunpass. Maybe west would bring sunshine?

Again, no such luck

Nevertheless, we drove on. Rain changed from drizzle to a heavy shower as we headed up Jaunpass. Its known as one of the best driving roads in switzerland, esp fabled for the towering granite peaks. but all we could see was fog

So what next? Get in the car and drive to... where?
Name: DSC2213LRL.jpg

Frankly speaking, there were not many options. From this high altitude we had great visiblity towards everywhere. East, west, north south.... All we saw were clouds.

We had the option of a big lake Lac De hongrin, or a small lake Oecheninsee, also called one of the most magical lakes in switzerland.
We chose the latter...Will it be a wrong decision or a right one... only time will tell!

Thanks a lot Tanveer for such a wonderful travelogue! You are a real good story teller. One who can keep the reader spellbound for months on and I am one of them. Please keep updating as there are lots of bhpians waiting for your next post eagerly.

BTW here's the wooden bridge in Innsbruck I clicked on my trip to Europe last year. I guess you too saw it.

There is a lot of similarity in the way your trip went. Like I too booked a IDMR catagory and got upgraded to a Ford Kuga . And you have taught a lot too. Keep it coming!!

Default Day 10 #3: Fog

Many people love fog.
I also like it... sometimes. Not when I'm on a holiday in a country far far away.

But there are some things you can't change. So we decided to look at the bright side. For example. It could have been raining heavily. But it isn't.

So I decide to shoot cow
Sonata Europa - 5 countries, 4000kms and 15 days-dsc2225lrxl.jpg

This cow is white and brown in color, and has a bell in its neck. It does not wear ear-rings, its merely identification tags. And it has horns. They do not blow.

And right now, she is angry. I have thrust a Nikon 16-85 right to her face
Sonata Europa - 5 countries, 4000kms and 15 days-dsc2226lrxl.jpg

So she makes a sound. I am sure she is telling use to go away in German. My wife speaks bit of german, but not cow german. I speak no german, except eier.

So I really don't know what is cow saying.

So cow turns head sideways
Sonata Europa - 5 countries, 4000kms and 15 days-dsc2227lrxl.jpg

And wham, tries to gore me.

After that, I decide to keep distance. And shoot cow from a distance. ITs more dangerous than tiger

A cow from far
Sonata Europa - 5 countries, 4000kms and 15 days-dsc2229lrxl.jpg

Up ahead the way looks a little better.
Sonata Europa - 5 countries, 4000kms and 15 days-dsc2230lrxl.jpg

And by half past noon, we are at one of the most beautiful lakes of switzerland. Its an alpine masterpiece, surrounded by peaks whose summits are adorned by blue glaciers.

But right now, all I see is this
Sonata Europa - 5 countries, 4000kms and 15 days-dsc2231lrxl.jpg

The Blue lake of Oecheninsee

We start walking back. Nothing to see here, move on.Come back

Sonata Europa - 5 countries, 4000kms and 15 days-dsc2234lrxl.jpg

Sonata Europa - 5 countries, 4000kms and 15 days-dsc2235lrxl.jpg

Sonata Europa - 5 countries, 4000kms and 15 days-dsc2236lrxl.jpg

And see more cows
Sonata Europa - 5 countries, 4000kms and 15 days-dsc2242lrxl.jpg

This one is not violent, and give us a nice pose
Sonata Europa - 5 countries, 4000kms and 15 days-dsc2243lrxl.jpg

Some days are truly divine. Today is not one of those days. Today is truly bovine.

So before we smell bovine, we take our blue gondola of the blue lake, and come down. Next is what?

As we get out, rain gets heavier, and we decide that it pointless to just roam around burning expensive diesel.
So we head back to our Chalet, but take a slightly longer route to see the Thun/Brienz lakes again

Super! Is what this thread is.

One question. Did you carry an International Drivers License? I've never carried it in Germany and Swiss in the past and never was asked but I believe Austria and Italy requires it?

Would love to follow your footsteps during my next Europe assignment in May June. Can you share your GPS Tracks too?

Waiting for you to conclude this thread.

Default Day 10 #5 : Our last night in switzerland

Tomorrow, we drive back to Austria, but before that we head towards north switzerland.
Its a long drive, but nevertheless, I decide to make most of the late evening.

Its almost 9, but we still have daylight, and clouds are clearing.

I walk to a waterfall, near our chalet. The grass is soaking wet, and I decide not to risk the shoes, only prefering rubber slippers. After all, no snakes here to bite!

The village of Stechelberg

And then shot the town of Lauterbrunnen. Towards the North
Name: DSC2323LRL.jpg
Views: 1002
Size: 86.1 KB
The sky is clearing.

Tomorrow, our route is set. I know which freeway to take.

But I don't want to. 2 days have been wasted, and I do not want to waste the drive on a freeway. So a decision has to be made. Me and my wife get together, and brainstorm. How to make the most of tomorrow.

We will drive to Austria through the German Autobahn after seeing Rhine falls, but we won't take the short route to Rhine falls, tucked away in North Switzerland.

Instead, we will take a long mountain route.
Which one? That is the question.

We have many options. We can go through west, with its swiss towns and lakes. The mountains are low, and meadows are green. However, its very "town like".

So we decide, we go east tomorrow.
I open the stored google maps, start looking towards the high passes, hoping for small blue specks. I find one. Sygic confirms that there is actually a road to there.

So route is decided.
We will get up early, climb some high passes, visit the lake, go to the Rhine falls, then cross Germany, and finally end up in Salzburg at night.

Pretty ambitious plan. But its the last chance to enjoy switzerland, and we have to make a most of it. We pay the chalet bill, pack our bags, and retire for the night Early. tomorrow, we will start early. And see where the road takes us hoping for a clear weather, and traffic free roads!

Meanwhile, here is our drive map for the day gone by
