Default Ranthambhore National Park - Tigers and More!

Ranthambhore - the name itself conjures images of wild jungles and safaris and Tigers. It is one of the most commercialised wildlife sanctuaries in India and also one that holds a special place in my heart as it was here that i was graced with my first sighting of the king of jungle, the magnificent beast - Tiger!

It was circa 2010, Oct month that we decided to head to Ranthambhore to beat CWG mess in Delhi. A visit to jungle is a pure unadultered joy and i have visited Ranthambhore, Jim Corbett and Sariska earlier as well before I got lucky and sighted a tiger in that visit.

It was been 2 years hence and i still cherish the sightings that i had in that visit. It was also this visit in which I came to realise the limitations of my digicam and started to think about getting a SLR to capture these moments better, though i am not sure if i have been successful to do so even with a DSLR!

How to get there?

I live in Gurgaon and love driving. Have a Scorpio and this is what i did for my visit to R'bhore - drove down. I had done this trip also in Jan 2010 with a lot of research by wifey and she came up with a gem of a TL that had a real nice description of the route. See link below -

Delhi – Ranthambore : Road Review*/*Ghumakkar – Inspiring travel experiences.

Going by the recommendations in the link also corroborated by knowledgeable people - we decided to take Route no. 2 mentioned in the review

Route 2 : Ranthambore – Lalsot – Dausa – Sikandra – Rajgarh – Alwar – Bhiwari – Gurgaon – Delhi

I must say that the review delivered fully - the roads were what the review said they were and made driving such a pleasure. From then on - wherever i goto Sariska or Ranthambhore, i take this route - it is less crowded and quality of roads is awesome.

Place of Stay

We stayed at a hotel called - Nahargarh, which is built in a haveli style. It is a new construction but built to mimic the havelis of old. IT is a nice place, a little pricey but the service and staff make it a very nice stay.

Safari bookings

Left it to the hotel - and they managed to get me safari booking for both the times on all days of my stay. I must say that contrary to other reviews - i found canter safaris to be nicer. However, you need to be lucky to get seats in right canter .

What do i mean by this? - I found that if you get a seat in a canter that had foreign tourists, the experience is more enjoyable. Because foreigners are in general more interested in wildlife and are a serious lot, also the guides and drivers are more serious about showing the forest to the foreigners. They give good information show different sights, birds, etc which does not happen if you are with a bunch of people who treat forest safaris as picnics and are only interested in one thing - Tiger! The guide and driver also dont take any special effort and quickly loose interest.

Both my tiger sightings in Ranthambhore were in canters with a group of foriegn tourists (maybe this is why i have a bias towards canters)

Enough said - now let the pics do some talking.

In our first safari - we had a grand sighting of a tigress cooling herself in a small pool of water.

It was a awesome sighting - closeup and in clear vision!

Hello Sachin,

Simply loved the pictures of female Tiger. You have captured her on minute details. The pictures are really nice.

You are truly lucky to have got a chance to see this majestic animal at a very close distance & that too for a long time.

Because I have heard experiences of many friends who just managed to see pug marks or voices of these great animals.

Anyways waiting for more Ranthambore pictures from your side. Did you managed to spot a Lion too?

The hotel where we were staying had a jeep trophy displayed in reception - on enquiring, it turned out that the son of the owner is a jeep fanatic and there were 3 restored jeeps standing in the hotel.

My son is also very much in love with jeeps and was very excited with the news - so off we went to the jeeps and some photos

Cool pics of the tigress mate! Pity about the out of focus "growl" shot, would have been awesome in focus.

And this TL could not have come at a better time for me. I am myself planning a trip to the reserve and am already glad for the info in here.

Thank you.
I know - it was framed correctly, but could not get a clear shot off.
BTW - for Ranthambhore, you can also book your safaris online. Check out the following link

Rajasthan Wildlife,Wild Life Rajasthan,Rajasthan Wildlife Sanctuary

If you want to book a RTDC hotel, see following link (Jhoomar Baori - heritage)

Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation Ltd.(Rajasthan Government Undertaking)

I have personally never stayed here, but they say it is a decent place. Else other options that i have stayed are

1. Tiger Den
2. Nahargarh

Both of them are nice places to stay with Nahargarh a little more expensive.

After Intermission

That was our first safari of the trip and we got lucky with tiger sighting. This was also a very relaxed sighting with only one more canter other than us on the scene - no jostling for space that normally happens with tiger sightings.

For the next couple of safaris - we enjoyed the jungle and other animals on a high of having sighted our first tiger.

Then came our last safari of the trip - early morning, we got into the canter and pushed off.

All other seats in the canter were occupied by a british tour and boy those guys had some awesome equipment - bodies and glasses!

Early morning jungle in Oct after plenty of rains is a very nice spectacle - all green and slightly moist ... and the quiet - it is awesome.

So here we were in a tranquil jungle roaming around soaking the sights - when suddenly our guide saw a gypsy with a forest guard and a walkie talkie going in a particular direction very purposefully, he says - they know where tiger is let us follow them - everyone hold tight!

And off we went hot in pursuit of the gypsy at breakneck speed - it was a chase worthy of any bollywood movie

Reaching the site - we saw a lot of other vehicles already in position - and a tigres in vicinity lying in a pool of water. T17 - if i remember correctly.

She is awesome and not in the least perturbed by the circus going around her with people and vehicles jostling for space. All of us were beaming, happy. For us - it was a special bonanza after the first tiger sighting.

The tigress slowly got out of the pool of water and emerged on our side and started walking on the tracks with all of us following her. she kept of walking and we kept on following - then she lied down on the track and...

continued on the other side of some pictures...

Lovely pictures Sachin! Loved the graceful tigress. You were pretty lucky to be able to catch it for such a long time. It isn't normally the case! Even your hotel looks amazing.

I know a couple people who visited the place but didn't get to see a single tiger.

T 17 or Sundari, the daughter of the legendary T 16 or Machchli that got a Lifetime Achievement Award along with the legendary B 2 of Bandhavgarh.

Sundari displaced her mother from her area and occupied that territory.

I too was in R'bhore around the same time when you were there and stayed in a property next to Nahargarh.
