Default Salzburg, Austria

Hello All,

This Travelogue dates back to last year (Feb 2011) when I was in Munich, Germany for official work. As I went on Schengen visa I was free to move around in any Schengen Country. Over the weekend, we planned a one day trip to Salzburg, Austria. Distance between Munich & Salzburg is approx 150 kms & can be coved by Train in 2 Hours.

Salzburg's old town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Salzburg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Being winter, the morning was chilly & the tempreture outside was -2 degrees. We were supposed to catch 7:30 train from Munich Central Station & left hotel Holiday Inn Munich South at 6:45 am.

Best part of being in Munich is the public transport is very organized & covers practically every part of the City. But as it was freezing cold outside, we took a taxi to Munich Central Station & the taxi was this:

Munich Central Station (Munchen Hauptpahnhof) is main railway station of Munich & more information about the same is available here:

Some information about Munich - Salzburg Railway:
Munich

I planned to catch some sleep in train, but the sight outside was absolutely spectacular & below are couple of photos taken from running train

The train was running very fast & one time & we reached Salzburg at 9:30 am sharp. As Austria is part of Schengan Agreement (Schengen Agreement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) no visa / passport check is done for people coming from Germany. Infact one does not even release when he / she has crossed the country border.

Just outside the railway centre there is Tourist information center & Bus Terminal. While in Salzburg it is highly recommended to buy Salzburg Card for 22 Eur which gives unlimited access to public transport, Cable car to Untersburg, Museums, Fortress, & many other places. Detailed information about Salzburg Card is available here:
Salzburg Card : salzburg.info

Bus terminal outside Salzburg Station:

After buying Salzburg Card & Tourist information Cards, we headed to Cable car which will take us to Untersburg.

Unttersburg is a part of Alps mountain range & stands almost at border between Germany & Austria.

Untersberg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As we had Salzburg Card, we had unlimited access to Buses going to Untersburg (Bus runs every 15 minutes). The distance from Station is approx 16 kms.

Salzburg is settled in on the bank of Salzach River & the river passes right between the city. There are couple of museums & shopping streets for one to hang around. We went to one of the art museum, but were not much impressed by the exhibits there.

Below are the pictures of the around Salzach River, Streets, museum & Fortress on top of a hill.

For those willing to stay overnight, there is a light & sound show which takes you back in history to Mozart's birth & stories around him.

Salzburg is the setting for the hit 1965 musical "The Sound of Music", did you see the Von Trapp family residence. I think, you picked the wrong time to see Salzburg, must be heavenly in spring. Great pics.

Lovely photos. Yet to go through the details typed. But thought I'd quickly reply before going back to this thread.

I kept Salzburg separate for a 1 week trip and another 1 week in Italy. But that never materialized till date. Had been to France, Netherlands, Belgium etc on multiple occasions.

Thanks for such wonderful photographs.

Did you go to the old salzburg salt mine? Its wonderful with the underground slide - just sit one behind another and let gravity take over for a 500 ft or so. That was the way workers used to get these ancient salt mines. Apparently the name of the city was derived from "salt", which in those days was a precious commodity. Peoples wages were paid out in salt instead of money. Thats how the name "salary" was derived for what you get every month in your jobs. Interesting bits of history and yes the birthplace for the sound of music.

Wow, reminded me of our trips way back. I've been to Salzburg twice. Once on my own to kill a weekend when I was in Germany. Took a weekend ticket, hopped on to all the regional express trains and landed up in Salzburg. That was during fall, and boy the place was colorful. Stayed in a International Youth Hostel, made some friends and traveled on. That was in 2000.

The next time was with my family for a proper holiday in Summer of 2004. Place is amazing. My favourite time passes were counting the boats in Salzach, and sleeping under the apple trees in Shloss Garden. My small one was just 1.5 years old and the big one just 5.5years then and we normally stopped at all the gardens and parks

Those Ice caves, The salt mines, the sound of music tour, Mozart city tour and the most unforgettable visit to the Eagle's Nest. Boy, you sure did bring a lot of memories back.

Thank you for sharing.

Absolutely stunning pics, Jignesh. Mostly we see Salzburg during summers, but the Feb's vistas are unparalleled. Was reminded of my Feb sojourn to Mt Titlis at Swiss Alps in 2008.
Thanks for sharing.

Yes Durango Dude. I missed the colors of spring / fall. But as I mentioned at the start of the travelogue, I went to Salzburg by chance rather than by choice. I was in Munich & there was not much to do on weekend. So we decided to go to Salzburg for a day.

Anyways thanks for appreciating the pictures.

Yes Mayankjha1806. This place looks great in Winter, but what I have heard from others is if you happen to go there in Spring / fall you will be mesmerized by colors natural beauty.

MX6, you should definitely spend atleast a week there. With your interest in ancient architecture, Salzburg would be a treat t oyour eyes & camera.

Hello Milestogo, no I have not been to Salt Mine. As I was there for just one day, I could not cover everything.

Hello Judemayne, Salzburg will be absolutely splendid in May.
Regarding reaching Untersburg, it is almost 20 KMs from Salzburg station & buses run every 15 minutes to Untersburg. If you are driving by your own car it should not take more than 45 minutes to reach from main City.
