Thanks. Have some pics of the pelicans. Not high resolution though. The birds were far away, very sensitive to my movement, and i only had tamron 70-300 (non VC). Will post whatever i have though.

Posting more info and details about the place.

Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is located in Jamnagar, Gujarat. It is about 10 kms from Jamnagar town. The sanctuary lies along the coast line. Bunds formed along the coast line to prevent fresh river water flowing into the sea have created a widespread area of wet grass lands / marshes. On the other side of bunds / dykes is sea water that comes right up to the bunds in high tide.

The combination of shallow sea water on one side, and fresh water wet lands on the other side of the bunds has created a prefect eco system for hundreds of bird species to flourish.

There are numerous varieties of birds. Some are resident, found through out the year. Others like Pelicans are migratory.

The migratory birds arrive in Sep and leave in end march. Winters therefore is the best time to visit the place. I was lucky to be here in Feb.

One very important thing, which i am sure most avid bird watchers will know. The best time to be here is very early in the morning. I suggest you should reach the place before first light breaks. Thats the time when birds come out in large numbers to feed. Also, you will escape the regular tourists to the place that generally reach here around 7-8 AM, and will this avoid their ruccus which usually will drive the birds away.

I was very lucky to spot flocks of hundreds of Storks, Cranes and Pelicans. They were all over the place. The sight of a huge flock of Great White Pelicans flying right over my head (Not more than 15-20 meters high) is something that i just cant forget.

For reaching the place, there are direct flights to Jamnagar from Mumbai only. However, you can fly into Rajkot, which is around 2 hours drive from Jamnagar, and take a taxi / cab to jamnagar.

Mr Scindia is in charge at the place, and is available on 9723774240. The entry fees are nominal. Rs 20 per person, and 100 for a camera.

Heres a map of the place. The "A" mark is the location.

nvldvr - WHAT A COINCIDENCE!!! I was about to start a new TL on Khijadiya (was there last week) and I see yours! I have almost the same snaps as yours but was shooting away with a P&S. Your pics came out really well and I only with i had an SLR with a good telephoto. BTW, my inlaws live in Sikka (DCC Colony) and was there to drop my wife and newborn kid. Jamnagar is a real avian paradise, I could spot a very wide array of birds from Storks to Herons to Spoon bills & Cranes.

Yes buddy, Jamnagar sure is a real avian paradise. You can spot beautiful bird species not only in the bird sanctuary area, but even in numerous salt pans and small/large water bodies that dot the landscape of Jamnagar. On other occasions that I have been there, i have spotted large flocks of beautiful Flamingos in such places.

An update on the status of sanctuary.

Five years since I was last here (i.e. in Mar 12), the sanctuary this time around was so starkly different. While back in Mar 12, there were huge flocks of pelicans, storks, cranes, herons etc all over the sanctuary, this time around I was not able to spot even 10 of these majestic birds put together. The reason being that hardly any rains in the last 3-4 years has dried up most of the water. So no water -->> no birds. And why no rains for the last few years? In my opinion, its on account of the drastically changing weather patterns due to global warming.

Anyways, it was extremely sad to see such a beautiful avian paradise in this state of decline.
