The Thazhathangadi Juma Masjid, dating back to around 1000 years, is one of the oldest mosques in the country. It is believed that Habib Dinar, son of Malik Dinar who introduced Kerala to Islam, constructed the masjid.

The picturesque beauty of the Masjid, on the banks of River Meenachil, attracts many visitors. Architecturally, it is a work of art. The carved wooden gabled roof, the beautiful inner courtyard, the latticed windows and the traditional bathing area all combine to give it a look of royalty.

There are two graves in the mosque, that of Malik Ibn Dinar and of the mason who constructed the mosque. There is also a sacred well with stone steps like the ones commonly seen in temples. The Government of Kerala has declared the mosque as one of its protected monuments.

Day 04
4th May 2013
Kumarakom

We reached Cheriyapally

Name: DSC_0427Edit.jpg
Views: 756
Size: 161.8 KB
Quote:
Cheriapally is located near Valiapally and is on the way to Kumarakom from Kottayam.

History behind its construction
At first, two groups of Christians, the Knanaya Christians and the Vadakkum bhagar (people from the northern side), used to worship at the Valiapally. Following a dispute between the two, the leader of the Vadakkum bhagar, Fr. Ouseph Kathanar, approached the Thekkumkoor Raja for grant of some land for building another church. The Raja granted his wish. Construction of the new church was completed in 1579.

The church is known for its peculiar architecture, a combination of the traditional temple architecture of Kerala and the Portuguese style. The large brick walls, granite pillars and the murals reflect the Hindu influence. The mural paintings depict both biblical and non-biblical themes.

Church feast
The feast of the church - Feast of St. Mary - falls on January 15 and is known as Vithukalude Perunnal which means ‘the festival of seeds’. It is observed to invoke the blessings of Virgin Mary upon the agricultural seeds. Another feast observed in this church is the Feast of the Assumption of St Mary (Vaangippu Perunnal).

Also dedicated to St Mary, Valiyapally is the older of the two churches, having been constructed in 1550. Among Kottayam's largest churches, it is famous for its two 8th century Persian crosses, both of which feature ancient inscriptions, suggesting that they date from some of India's earliest Christian days.

Our plan was to reach the lands end and wet our legs in the lake. We went in search of that vantage spot. It was already 17:00 hours by now.

I spent my initial 4 years of life in Kumarakom; RARS Quarters Kavanattinkara to be precise. And Attamangalam Church used to be our regular Sunday ride. Happy to see the shots.
