Looks like there is also a route from Palani to Pannaikadu bypassing Kodai.
Nice routing! Should be fun in the rains. Any signs of wild life ? Any restrictions for travel timings?

Thanks a lot for reading this Ampere.

Since longtime I'm eager to know who you really are !!
Please let me know your real name sometime .

Secondly the 'Eddy' avatar (it is eddy isn't?) impresses me a lot, cos it connects me instantly to 'Iron Maiden' which is my No.1 favorite Rock Band.

Regarding Palani to Pannaikadu, Yes there is a route showing on google and I hope it exists. There are many less traveled roads but we are unable go due to time crunch.

We didnt see any wildlife.. though presence of wild boars and mountain goats (Kelayaadu in tamil) are reported.

I dont think there is any time restriction but its better avoided after dusk.

We saw a forest check post somewhere but none stopped us

Thanks again !

Periyakulam - Adukkam - Perumal Malai - Kodai
Definitely doable by car, jeep, bikes. Lookout for bad patches before and after Adukkam. From perumalmalai, just before Adukkam, if the sky is clear, you can see the dry vaigai dam. Liberal use of horn recommended on narrow / blind curves.

Not sure of Kumbakarai-Vellagavi-Kodai as it is more of a trekker's route and I prefer the mechanical comfort of a car

Regarding Kodai - Munnar direct route, it is actually through Mannavanur, Kilavari and beyond. The road after Kilavarai comes under forest and there isnt a chance of opening up this section as it will mean a sureshot death to the nature around there.

For the people who want more comfort as well as the spectacular views of palani hills ghat road, you can try Kodai - Palani - Ottanchatram - Vedasandur - 4 track road to Bangalore
Best regards
Bala

First, I apologise for this back-to-back posting on my thread, but I felt it useful to write. Moderators please excuse.

I want to thank Bala and Shyamk, for the discussion we had about the "Adukkam Route"

Thank you sirs, I finally drove down on this "Kodaikanal-Adukkam-Periakulam" route 2 days ago ( on 11.11.2013 ) on my Estilo. A wonderful experience for life-time.

Soon will share some pictures and details of the drive over a new thread, a seperate travelogue

Thanks & Regards.

Well written travelogue Ddrive.
Its always been my dream to travel through un-explored roads and see places which haven't yet come to glances of camera flashes.

Looks like you have discovered one.

Kodaikanal is a destination which has been eluding me for some time.
Looking forward to visiting there soon

thanks for sharing

Thanks a lot for the kind words Dhanush Menon.
And thanks for bringing up this thread again.

Please go for it, its a lovely place.
You can go up thru the regular Vathalakundu route, and while coming down you can do the above Pannaikadu route. I believe you are coming from Kochi/Kollam, so you can do the forsaken Adukkam Route (Driving down Kodaikanal - The Adukkam Route) also, while driving down, because the Adukkam route directly connects you to Periakulam, which will be faster for returning to Kochi.

Regards.

Here are two other routes showing up on google.

Kodaikanal-Thandikudi-Pachalur-Oddanchatram (SH-37) &
Kodaikanal-Thandikudi-Kilakkuchettipatti-Dharumathupatti Kombai Dam -Palayakannivadi (SH-37)

Thought of doing this circuit last week when we were in Kodai, but couldn't due to time crunch

Just an information please.

Not been through this route recently, but these are regular bus routes hence it should be good.
Sitharevu to Oddanchatram again is a regular bus route, Sitharevu to Sempatti excellent highway and take left at Sempatti and towards Kanniwadi and then Oddanchatram. If you are not particular about Sitharevu and wanna reach Oddanchatram, you can take the alternative route that is Kodaikanal, Pannaikadu, Thandikudi, Pachalur and down the hill direct to Oddanchatram.

Thanks Ddrive for the quick update. Which route is more scenic, i.e., Pachalur, Oddanchathram or more lenghty Sitharevu, Sempatty?

Also any recent update of the route from Periyakulam to Perumal Malai via Adukkam? Trust no issues in asking it here. I have read your travelogue on that journey and skeptical about taking a wider car on that route.
