Hi AKP

Awesome pictures. I must say you have been blessed to get lovely sunlight on the day you visited Pangong.

Looks like you have a 4WD Scorpio. How was the performance?

Great pictures. Keep them coming.

Cheers

Default Ladakh trip photologue: Day 9 (Leh - Korzok)

After a total stay of four days in three installments, we finally check out of Hotel Kidar today. The owner Mr Jigmet and his staff posing with my daughter and wife.

Ladakh Trip Photologue-20130703090353.jpg

We were to take the Leh-Karu-Upshi-Chumathang-Mahe-Sumdo-Korzok route. The route is relatively flat, with very little ascent/descent.

Ladakh Trip Photologue-20130703112400.jpg

From Upshi to Mahe, it is a beautiful drive, going alongside a river.

Ladakh Trip Photologue-20130703113300.jpg

Soon, however, we hit a bottleneck. There is roadwork going on at various points - they are making the road wider and at places straighter by cutting rocks etc. There was a holdup of more than an hour here, which we did not anticipate at all, and which took away a crucial one hour from our time at Tso Moriri.

After Tso Kiagar, there are just tyre tracks, no roads any more, till you reach Korzok. Actually there is a gravel road, but the tyre tracks are distinctly better to drive on.

Default Ladakh trip photologue: Day 9 (Contd)

Unlike in Pangong, we reach Tso Moriri quite late, with daylight all but gone. To add to that, next day our plan is to drive to Jispa, which is going to be a long drive and which means we should leave very early. All this meant that we could not really capture Tso Moriri well enough with our lense.

Here is whatever little we could capture.

Default Ladakh trip photologue: Days 10 & 11

It is going to be swift end to the log now. From Korzok, it was basically a long drive back home. And since both the days involved really long drives, we could not stop to take pictures, even when we wanted to. Managed to take just a few, sitting in the car.

Day 10: Korzok - Sumdo - Tso Kar - Debring - Pang - Sarchu - Jispa

Between Sumdo and Tso Kar. Not sure what that while deposit on the left is. Salt deposit?

From the first floor balcony in Padma Lodge. They have these luxury tents now which are costlier than their regular rooms.

Somewhere near Sissu.

Ladakh Trip Photologue-20130705121557a.jpg

Soon after, the bad roads begin. And then, when you are closer to Rohtang and start thinking the road would get worse, you get this - a perfectly smooth top, wide enough to make you feel you are in the plains.

Ladakh Trip Photologue-20130705140410.jpg

It was bright and sunny all along so far. But at the Rohtang top and on the Manali side, it was cloudy and foggy.

Ladakh Trip Photologue-20130705141115.jpg

On the Manali side, almost the entire stretch the roads were good. Except this part where road work was going on resulting in a traffic jam.

Ladakh Trip Photologue-20130705151605.jpg

We reach Manali at around 5 PM. Our original plan was to stop here or in Kullu for the night and then drive back home the next day. But instead, we take a long snacks break and then just decide to drive through the night. We were home early next morning.

There are still the videos from the car camera to be processed. Will put up a few here, but that is likely to take a bit of time.

Meanwhile, thanks everyone for going through the thread patiently.

Marvellous pictures akp. A very crisp and well written travelogue. Everytime I go through such a travelogue, I'm tempted. Hope to find an opportunity soon in near future.

You made me travel through the fotos AKP..After my last years Mumbai_Leh-Mumbai ride in July. On a 2W, it becomes difficult to manage so many fotos and of this patience and quality..

I am seriously thinking of buying a Xylo as I am bitten by this wandering bugs of the mountains..makes me impatient after seeing such a beautiful logue.

The best photologue I have come across so far..

A few questions though..I have seen the ride..wanted to know about the camera and the lens..superb and crisp fotos..i must say..

We didn't go to any place where 4wd is a must, though I used 4L briefly at one or two places. Overall, the vehicle performed wonderfully well - nothing failed, and did not need any attention for the entire trip. Very happy.

Just make a plan and take the plunge. There is enough information on this forum and elsewhere on the net to enable you to make a good plan.

Thanks.
I had two bodies - canon 500D and 600D, one with Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and the other with Tokina 11-16 f/2.8. Also used canon 100mm macro USM for some of the Pangong shots. And there are 3/4 pictures from a P&S too.

akp - So soothing for a mid week morning. I enjoyed all 11 days in one shot. Lovely snaps there, wander thirst! Your Tokina has served well

As you didn't engage 4H anywhere, looks like my Xylo can do it with little extra care? Well, let my kids grow little more older to handle such a long drive. Its too far a drive for Southies.
