Default A Trip to Peechi Reservoir & Dam, Trichur (Kerala)

SOME FACTS

Peechi Dam is situated 22 kms outside Thrissur city. The dam was constructed as an irrigation project for the surrounding villages. At the same time, it catered the drinking water needs of the population of Thrissur City. It serves as an irrigation dam, reaching out to the paddy fields in and around Thrissur city. Built across the Manali River, the dam is a vast catchment area of nearly 3,200 acres with extensive botanical gardens and cascading fountains. It offers numerous inviting avenues for tourists. One can see tuskers on the bank of Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1958 covering 125 square kilometres. (Source: Wikipedia)

BACKGROUND OF THE TRIP

We were at Thrissur to attend a marriage of my relative. We had one spare day at our disposal (following the wedding) and had decided to go for an outing.

The weather out there was very pleasant. Occasional showers kept the temperature under control. We had many places in mind, including Athirappilli but finally decided on Peechi. This decision was taken because Peechi was easily reachable from the town. Also, we had to catch the train in the evening, any delay or a traffic jam could be catastrophic. More over, we heard that the reservoir was full after the recent monsoon and most importantly the place was not as crowded as Athirappilli.

OUR DRIVE

We were four adults and two kids. I happily borrowed my brother's Alto. After being used to with Wagon R or Xing, I found this car very small and cramped. Anyway we started our journey at around 9:30AM. Soon we entered the National Highway and crossed Mannuthy. True to its reputation, NH47 did not "disappoint" us The road was full of potholes and rough patches. After 9KMs from Mannuthy, we took a right turn to Peechi Road. From this point for up to a kilometer or so, some repair work has been done on the road. After that, the situation worsened. The road was in a pathetic condition. This continued until we reached the Dam. It took us nearly 50 minutes to reach Peechi Dam.

NOW SOME IMAGES..

The roads were in a bad condition, all the way to Peechi.

Trip to Peechi Reservoir & Dam Continued...

Parking was not an issue an Peechi Dam. There was ample of space for atleast 50 cars. Also found the bus service at frequent interval to and from Thrissur.

After purchasing the entry tickets, we moved towards the dam. It was a magnificent sight. The reservoir was full. The forest around the reservoir was lush green. We enjoyed the surroundings. There were very few tourists around. I was told by a staff that during the recent monsoon, they had opened all four shutters and that happens very rarely.

NOW REST OF THE PHOTOS

On top of the dam.

This Notice Board is self explanatory.
But "we" know how to "deal" with these prohibitions (See the two following pictures)

ANTI-CLIMAX

At this point my camera ran out of power and refused to give me one last shot of the frontal view of the dam.

Without the front view, I am sure this travelogue would look incomplete. So, I am borrowing a picture from Wikipedia (the very first picture).

Camera Used: Nikon Coolpix P5100 Point & Shoot
My drive: Maruti Alto LXi
PAX: 4A 2C
Weather: Pleasant
Time spent: About 2.5 hrs.
Satisfaction Index: 3/5
Remarks: Visit during the evening hours.

There is an engineering museum & a 3D Kerala Model. But, both are not open to the public now.
The boating service is not available at present.
The signboards placed near the dam site says there is a swimming pool available.
Water Capacity of the dam: 110.4 million m3

This is my first travelogue. Apologize for any mistakes.

Hi iVento (an APPLE fan?)

Good photographs and an eye opener too. I had visited Athirampalli falls and had traveled through Sholayar-Vazhachal route earlier but not heard of such a dam near Trichur. You had mentioned about the forest near the dam in your post. Do they allow us to camp inside the forest or does Kerala State Forest Department have accommodation facilities there? I will be doing a Guruvayur trip by end of this year and hence would like to explore this place.

Nice pictures. The place looks very calm and quite. Just the voice of nature. Sometimes the lesser known places are more relaxing than the tourist attractions which are totally commercialised. People selling you stuffs while you really want to enjoy the nature.

Is it always like this or are you there at an off season or something?

Too good for a first travelogue. A well composed and full fledged writeup.
I liked the pictures and the proper order in which they are posted here.
The way you posted the picture of 'writings on the wall' was really humourous. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing, makes me nostalgic about the project that I did for Kerala Forest Research Institute some years ago. Still remember the hike we did in the forest which had the different genus of plants in one single mountain range.

Krish, thanks for your compliments. I heard that there is a Govt. Rest House providing accommodation. (Not sure though). About the camp, please check this link http://peechi.org/html/Nature_Camps.html I think they provide the camp facility for 30-40 pax group. Call them & give a try.

HillMan, Peechi is never been a crowded place except occasional groups of school students who are there for excursion. This is mainly because there are no major attraction here other than the dam itself. Solitude & Silence is not necessarily everyone's cup of tea.

Ddrive, thanks for the compliments. It's a good idea to write a travelogue from a prospective tourist's point of view who has never been to that place before. That helps everyone!

Wildy, thanks for your compliments. That was exactly my idea when I wrote this travelogue.

I saw several Govt. Institutes on my way to Peechi. This is the one you are talking about?
