Thank you Saket.

Rented cars: I paid approximately 12,000 INR as a lumpsum for the following:
- Airport pickup and drop
- 3D/2N trip to Pokhara (about 450 km)
- Local sightseeing around Kathmandu (Swayambhunath, Patan, Boudhanath, some shopping) from 8:30 am to 3 pm.

Food: The average cost works out to about 400 INR per person for each meal. Street food is much cheaper. The good restaurants serving local thalis charge around 150-300 INR per person, depending on the area.

Hotels: We saw offers from as low as 800 INR for a basic B&B, to 16,000 INR as a package for 4D/3N at the Soaltee, breakfast included. Even the cheap hotels offer free wi-fi, as does almost any restaurant.

Entry points: There are 6 points through which one can enter Nepal, depending on which side of India you approach Nepal from.

Thanks, Lalu. Seems you also had some cloud cover while you were there. The watermark takes away from the grandeur of the photo though, and its text certainly needs a revision to "Nepal from the front seat"!!

It should be changed to Nepal from the middle seat I say!

- Sir, you want Peas Pakoda?
- Huh? Okay...
- Sir, road is very bad, you can walk?
-
(Sure I can walk, and sure, I'm hungry.) But how far do we have to go for this... err... peas pakoda?
- On top of that hill, Sir. Made by Japanese, Sir.

And we head out to...
Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-pagoda-7.jpg

It's a long climb up the stairs in search of world peace. In any case, I'm hungry. We all are, after the walk through the cave. And the road up to the base of the stairs was quite miserable for the Manza (in my own car I wouldn't have blinked). The driver was scraping the underbody so frequenty with 5 on board, that I had to get out and walk a kilometer uphill while the ladies remained in the car for the rest of the way.

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-pagoda-6.jpg

Peace pagodas, as they come, look quite similar to each other. Closer home, Delhi has one. So does Leh. One in Darjeeling that I remember. And if you've seen a couple of them, you'll realize they all look much the same. We decided that in the interests of hunger, time, effort and family peace, we would skip climbing all those stairs.

For the sake of record, here are a few long shots of the pagoda.

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-pagoda-4.jpg

With a substantial Tibetan refugee population settled in Pokhara, it is no wonder that their colonies have become a tourist attraction.

The driver urges us to take a look inside, and buy anything we like.

The prices are steep enough to make us turn away. The people working away at producing handicrafts on the verandah are more interesting.

As for pagodas and chortens, here's one from the colony we visited.

Our next destination would be - well - a little batty!

Snow View Cafe or Mountain View Cafe sounds nice around these parts. Hill View Cafe will do. Valley View, Lake View, River View, Sky View, Padosan View... but Cave View Cafe? But here we are, looking forward to viewing the Chameri Gufa or Bat Cave - and it's so dark inside you need torches to find your way in.

One can rent these torches from the counter at an additional fee of 100 NPR per torch, but one is welcome to carry one's own too. Make sure you have a powerful torch - those puny two-AAA-cells-powering-one-LED things are wholly inadequate.

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-batcave-17.jpg

Here we go, bat-watching...

Spot the bats in this pic!
Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-batcave-9.jpg

...and what a profusion of bats! We're just glad they don't start fluttering about when the bright lights shine on them.

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-batcave-11.jpg

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-batcave-12.jpg

The cave can be traversed completely, and then one climbs some stairs to come out from the other end - the recommended exit for adventure-lovers!

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-batcave-13.jpg

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-batcave-16.jpg

It is a different story that you either need to be a midget or an acrobat to come out of the other end of the cave.

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-batcave-18.jpg

Watch the sequence of some folks crawling out!

We decide to be prudent and exit the same way we entered.

The International Mountain Museum

This museum is devoted to the mountains of Nepal, its people, and the brave mountaineers from across the world who set out to climb the peaks over the years.

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-mountainmuseum-2.jpg

A memorial dedicated to, simply, 'mountaineers who lost their lives'.

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-mountainmuseum-3.jpg

Adjacent to the parking lot is a 21-metre climbing wall for the adventure-minded, and next to the museum building is a 9.5-metre-high model of Mount Manaslu for the less adventurous.

On display are some original gear from many of the first & historical climbs, as well as objects and displays of ethnic, cultural and geological interest. Some displays of the flora and fauna of the Himalayan region can also be seen (some which are quite poorly preserved / labelled).

Some more glimpses from Pokhara.

One is left wondering how a little bridge (pul) across the deep gorge of the Seti River, named after Kunwar Indrajeet Singh, Nepal's first-doctor-turned-politician, could become the K.I.Sing Pool and need 20 NPR to be paid to take a look! Hardly a tourist destination!

Good going doc. Updated myself with the entire write up in one go! Your sense of humor has been well used in writing this up. Loved it. Too bad you were not blessed with the 'views' of Pokhara. They are absolutely amazing. My last sojourn was back in 2001, raring to go again!

The drive back from Pokhara to Kathmandu is mercifully devoid of rain and cloudy weather apart from the early morning, and it is a warm day with bright sunshine. The road is scenic, and we plan to stop on the way and visit the Manakamana Temple. For now, here's a look at the scenery along the way.

Considering that the entry gate seems not too congested, the Manakamana Temple is f-a-a-a-r more crowded than we anticipate. It is on top of a hill, which can take 5 hours or more to trek up to. But there is also a ropeway to take you up to the temple, and during a normal day it takes you <2 hours to go up, complete the darshan, come down and be on your way again.

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-manakamana-8.jpg

But today is not a normal day. It is still the festival of Dashain. Local devotees are still thronging in huge numbers to the temple, dressed in their best, and the queues for the ropeway ticket are endless.

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-manakamana-1.jpg

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-manakamana-6.jpg

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-manakamana-7.jpg

Add to the chaos the number of protesting goats being dragged along to be sacrificed...

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-manakamana-2.jpg

...and somehow our devotion takes a backseat as we turn around and set off again, foregoing the visit to the temple.

For those adventure-minded gentlemen (and ladies) who may be curious to find out what their roadtrip in Nepal would cost them, here are the numbers:

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-shops-5.jpg

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-shops-6.jpg

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-shops-8.jpg

Of course, for your meals, you could explore the Nepalese equivalent of dhabas, aka staff hotels.

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-shops-2.jpg

Be warned: Alcohol is available commonly at all these staff hotels, and drunken driving, especially after sundown, is extremely rampant on Nepal highways. Please be on your guard while driving. In any case, be prepared for the unexpected car to swing out at you without warning or care.

The rains had stopped rafting activities; on our way back we find the rafts in action.

Rafting is perhaps so lucrative that a car driver couldn't hold back his urge. He dived straight off the cliff into the Trishuli river, car and all.

We return to Kathmandu that evening, to be greeted by a mild drizzle, followed by a grand rainbow in all its majesty. Special thanks go to Rudra Sen for post-processing the photograph and more accurately reproducing the majestic view.

Swayambhunath is a sensual delight for the eyes, as well as the nose - the smell of agarbattis and butter lamps is omnipresent. Be warned : One can perhaps go a little trigger-happy with the camera on a bright and sunny day like this.

Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara) : Dashain, Religion, Phailin and Fun-swayambhunath-34.jpg

The stupa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but the monkeys are not. They lend their name to the place and it is commonly also known as the Monkey Temple. Legend has it that the Kathmandu Valley was once a lake, and the hill on which Swayambhunath is located rose spontaneously out of the waters - hence swayambhu. I suppose the monkeys were the first inhabitants of the hill, well before Homo sapiens arrived! Meet the monkeys (and a few dogs plus lots of pigeons) first!

With lots of pigeons around, how do you maintain a pristine white stupa in its pristine white condition? Well, you whitewash it frequently of course! In fact, daily would do just fine. But... daily? Imagine the labour involved! Not really... Nepalese have as much experience in jugaad as we Indians do. So you keep a vat of whitewash mix going all the time, and this is how you paint the stupa - by flinging up the solution mug-by-mug!

The Swayambhunath Stupa is a perfectly proportioned structure, with the gilded dome drawing the eye automatically upwards. The three eyes (trinetra) of the Buddha look out in the four cardinal directions. Below that, the curly sign symbolizes, apart from the nose of the Buddha, the number one in Nepalese, signifying unity.

...but not before trying to toss a few coins with a prayer for eternal peace on earth.

There are a number of smaller replicas of the main stupa, as well as intricately carved statues.

As one climbs up, and finally at the top, the panorama of the Kathmandu valley comes into view.

Our next stop will be for a spot of shopping, but not before the car and its driver both start throwing tantrums.

Well, this biker's sticker has captured my sentiments quite perfectly, as far as our ride for the day is concerned.

The driver is a grumpy old fellow, and the car is equally old and grumpy. It likes to mark its territory. At some point in time, the undercarriage had been scraped mercilessly, with destruction of the fuel line from tank to engine. Nepali jugaad saw to it that a plastic pipe was used instead of the metal pipe. And the plastic pipe popped out under pressure!

Another time, the boot refused to lock, requiring deployment of a string to take care of that!

Here's where we went shopping...

Smoking anywhere is fine, but don't you dare chew paan and decorate the walls in Nepal. Unless you have 5000 NPR to spare!

Awesome Shamindra da. Pity the rains were a bit of a dampener. Beautiful pictures to complement the travelogue. I always wanted to visit Kathmandu specially Durbar Square for these two beautiful songs which were shot in the same place I think.

From the movie Dhongee

and from the movie Mahaan
