Thanks for rekindling memories. I had visited this place long back in 80's, need to revisit this place in leisure. Thanks for sharing detailed pictures.

Did you complete entire journey over period of 32-33 hours?

Most welcome, sukiwa!

Yes, it was done in about 32 hours. Distance covered = 350+ onward took 8 & half hours - including 50 minutes in traffic jam at Manjri, an hour for dinner (Bhigwan) and fuel top up (Uruli) & 400~ return took 8 hrs 45 min - including 30 minutes fuel filling (Miraj & Satara) and 40 minutes for dinner (near Satara).

Solapur route is much quicker and better due to nearly complete four lane road.

Actually wanted visit Pandharpur enroute, but couldn't.

Yes, Haque, you are absolutely right.

It felt great to leave the burden of daily office drudgery at Pune and roam about soaking in all the fine monuments.

This was my question / doubt...

In fact, just imagine how many people must have been put to work to create this monument and who must have coordinated all of them?

An answer to this was available, which I will share at the end of the thread.

This is sort of a hint -

Oops!

I was so engrossed in the Mewar / Udaipur trip of predatorwheelz that I quite forgot about the unfinished agenda here... (that is a quite a journey he has undertaken)

The last of the snaps, which is a sort of pictorial clue to the question

The Bijapur skyline as seen from the Gumbaz.

Thanks Prabhu for the post. Bikapur is my hometown and it feels nice to see my place in this forum. We have some magnificent monuments in Bijapur, but thanks to our Govt most of them lie in Shabbles. If they maintain it properly we could easily be on the world map as one of the best Historic destinations in the World. We are proud that we have the World's biggest unsupported Dome.

There are other Architectural beauties such as Ibrahim Rauza. Its believed that Taj Mahal was inspired by this structure. (Wikipedia). Most of the Monuments are built by Malik Sandal.

The Mueseum houses most of the magnificient Artifacts and gives the glimpse of erst while kingdom of Ibrahim Adil Shahi.

Was so engrossed in the Mewar & Udaipur travelogue that quite forgot this unfinished business.....

If look at the skyline pictures of Bijapur, you will see another Gumbaz in the horizon.

We were told that that was the trail run (in our lingo, scale mode or a concept ? ), which was first built on the same proportions but lesser size, so that the actual Gumbaz can then rise up.

Nothing beats this idea - you have a standing example in front of you, which you need to copy on a larger scale. Neat.

BTW, there are supposed to be 256 gumbazes in Bijapur..

Just to add a few trivia on the Gol Gumbaz, here goes :

1. The building that houses the museum today, which kind of obstructs the view at the gate, was intentionally added by Adil Shah to ward off any "nazar" on the grand scale of the monument.

2. The details of the frescos on the outer walls are perfect combination of Hindu and Islamic designs. The blend is absolutely perfect.

3. The giant dome rests on circular pendentives ( civil engineers, behold the expertise they had more than 500 years ago ).

4. The shadow of the Gol Gumbaz never ever falls on the neighbouring masoleum of Adil Shah's teacher, any time during the day or the year. Considering the relative sizes of the Gol Gumbaz and the mausoleum, this is something worthy of praise.
