Default Orange, Green & Blue - Coorg Ahoy!

A free vacation - Nothing can beat that!
Thanks to my wife's aunt who made a very wise investment choice in 1996, We got to spend a couple of nights at Orange County Coorg. As I was driving down on a weekday, I decided to take the mysore ring road and drive up to kushalnagar. The drive to Orange county was smooth as butter with very good roads (excluding the last 7-8 KM after Siddapura) and almost zero traffic.

The weather was beautiful and rains had turned Coorg into this lush green paradise. Not going to waste words trying to describe Orange county. Will let the pics do the talking

Green, Blue & Breathtakingly Serene - mix of paddy fields and plantation wrap you up in different shades of green

The reading room - the property is beautifully maintained and everyone is extremely courteous

Comfort! - the reading room is a beautiful place to dive into a book or just soak in the atmosphere

Fireplace - every room, lounge & restaurant has a fireplace which just adds to the rustic charm of the place

The Lilly pool cottage - the smallest available cottage, which has a living, dining & bedroom with a very large bathroom. Also lets not forget the lilly pool and the private swimming pool next to it!

Other comforts - apart from the private pool, you also have access to a family pool and an adult pool. There are three restaurants in the property and of the three, Plantain leaf - the thali restaurant was the clear winner. Sinfully delicious food that will surely add to add to the waistline!

Bird watching - Never thought that this could be so much fun. Mr Murthy & Mr Vishnu were our guides for the two days that we went bird watching and it was a treat for sore eyes. Both gentlemen were experts at what they did and we saw close to 30 odd species of birds. Most pics taken with a 70-300, which does not do justice to these colorful beauties

Malabar Grey Hornbill - Male with the Orange beak, which looks like a flame when in sunlight

Spotted dove

Oriental White eyes

Bee catcher - its a treat to watch these small birds flutter around

Vernal Hanging parrot - supposedly the only species of parrots in India (all the others are parakeets). These birds hang upside down and eat fruits, hence the name

Lotens Sunbird - the smallest bird in India. As small as a hummingbird and its purple breast glitters in the sunlight

Magpie Robin

Yellow Wagtail - Not sure of the name but this bird supposedly flies down from the himalayan region to the western ghats in Sep/October

Also managed to see a Goshawk with its beautiful black and white wings catching the sunlight as it flew around enjoying the rising thermals. Looked something like this and was great to watch it glide and dive around

After two days of blissful comfort we had to pack our bags and drive back. Had planned to spend a night in Mysore and visit Chamundi temple the next day morning. On the way stopped at Dubbare elephant camp but did not see any elephants as they had gone to play football (not kidding!). Also visited Nisargadhama and Tibetian monastry at Bylekupe

Beautiful day for a drive

Malgudi restraunt - Mysore - tasty veg fare

Stayed at Tulips Homestay and it was clean and functional accommodation that is perfect for a short stay.

Temples & tenginakai!

After the morning visit to Chamundi temple and a quick breakfast at Malgudi restaurant, we decided to visit the KRS backwaters and the take a peek at the new temple at kannambadi. The route to the place is pretty straight forward if you follow google and the roads are pretty good but watch out for unmarked speed breakers after the brindavan gardens turn off.

The temple complex is surrounded by water on three sides and its such a quiet place if you can ignore the raucous crowd. Would be a great place to drive down to from Bangalore to watch the sunrise

The drive back from KRS to Bangalore was again very easy as I managed to beat the Sunday evening rush hour but dark clouds and intermittent rain reflected my mood as i drove back towards the monotony of everyday life.

Those are some lovely pictures. I especially loved the concept of a private swimming pool + lily pool attached to the cottage. These resorts often are located at some of the best areas albeit a little far from the town-market. And the experience must have been even more enjoyable all thanks to your wife's aunt
