Default Back to the hills - Weekends @ Sringeri & Wayanad

The beachbum finally got a chance to head to the hills and soak in some mist!
Sringeri was on the agenda for quiet some time and the plan was finalized for 25th Dec weekend. Visit family friends at chikmagalur and then drive down to Sringeri. Got WA/WB done and after a quick check of fluids, we were all set.

Bangalore > Hassan > Belur > Chikmagalur beautiful roads and peaceful drive. On the way to Belur, decided to visit Halebeed as we had never been there. The main temple was chock a block with kids on school tours and hence visited the Jain temple & the Kedareshwara temple.

Reached Chikmagalur for lunch and spent the evening with family fiends. Was a little worried about road condition to Sringeri as someone had posted that roads were bad and they had taken 4 hours to get to Chikmagalur from Sringeri.

Chikmagalur > Aldur > Balehonnur > Jayapura > Sringeri
Left Chikmagalur at 8 AM and reached the Sringeri temple gate at 10 AM. Roads are very good except for a 7-8 Km stretch between Aldur > Balehonnur where the tarmac is broken at the sharp curves. There was hardly any traffic on the way and it was a joy to drive around the twistys.

Just after Jayapura

After having spent the day at the temple, we decided to visit Sirimane falls the next day. After morning pooja and lunch, we head towards the falls via Kigga. Sringer to Kigga is very good two lane road and an easy drive. After Kigga, you need to take a right and climb up a small hill with a relatively steep incline to get to the road to Sirimane. The last 5 KM to Sirimane is a bone breaker and will test the suspension of most cars. Add to that a small bridge and big cars from Bangalore with zero road sense, you have a real recipe for disaster!

Sirimane falls is located in the middle of thick forest and the drive to the falls can get pretty lonely. The way to the falls is pretty well marked but in Kannada. If you cant read kannada, then you could get lost as the chance of finding people on the roads is next to zero. As soon as we park, a bus load of school kids arrive and I am . A short set of steps leads down to the foot of the falls and its beautiful out there. There were a couple of families when we reached the falls and it was quiet calm and peaceful to watch the water and soak in the green. In 5 minutes, the place became "Wonderla" as screaming adolescents brought the roof down. We quietly packed up and left the place. Will surely go there on a weekday just after the rains.

The return drive via Chikmagalur was uneventful and we managed to avoid the sunday evening rush at toll plazas. On the way back, a friend of mine calls and asks us about new year plans. We get talking and decide that Wayanad would be a great place to spend the first weekend of the New Year

I get back home and start searching online and calling every home stay in wayanad. Finally we managed to find accommodation at Verdure Wayanad near Kalpetta. The next few days were spent on the various route threads and travelogues. Plan was to leave early morning on 2nd in my friend's new Elite i20 and reach Kalpetta for lunch.

Bangalore > Mysore > Nanjangud > Gundlepete > Sultan Bathery > Kalpetta
Managed to beat the traffic on Mysore road and after a short stop for breakfast, we hit Mysore - Nanjangud road at 9.30 am. This route should be the last option as the road is broken in a lot of sections and the traffic is very heavy.

Nanjangud > Gundlepete > Sultan Bathery > Kalpetta was a breeze and the elite i20 zipped through the distance at a good clip. The car drives like a dream and even the rear seat comfort has improved leaps and bounds over the older i20. Even though you still feel you are climbing into a boat (when compared to my WagonR), the ride is not as wallowy. Will stop writing now and let the pics do the talking

Mouth watering roads (& crazy bus drivers!!!)

Lakkidi view point
After a quick nap, we decide to head to the view point. On the way we could see the sun dipping and we were sure that we will get to the view point only after the sun sets. We cross Wayanad Gate and we see this

The next day morning we find that the mist is a lot heavier than the previous day. Its 11 am and we still see tendrils of mist floating around the trees and foliage.

After crossing muthanga we decide to drive down via Chamrajnagar > Muguru > T. Narsipura > Talakadu > Malavalli > Kanakpura > Bangalore as we wanted to avoid the mad rush on mysore road. Apart from a short 4-5km stretch just after Talakadu, the roads are really good and easy to drive. We left Chamrajnagar at 3.15 PM and were at the Coffee day just before Nice Road road junction at 6.30 PM.

New year.Road trip.Green hills.Dams.Twisty roads. Great Drive! Now back to the drawing board to plan the next ride.

Nice trips and good photos, enjoyed going through them. How did you like the Mysore road compared to Kanakpura, which one would you recommend after your trip.

Thanks majumon. Depends where your destination is. If it is mysore/coorg, then mysore road but need to leave very early. If it is kerala, then kanakpura road any day.
