If non-swimmers want to go diving in the Maldives, they sure can. However, the resort dive centres in Maldives are a bit more professional in recommendations. Thailand is all about getting maximum people to dive as it generates maximum revenue.
TheDesertRat - I should thank you for this thread, which inspired me to plan Maldives trip for anniversary. Returned back from an awesome trip, this Monday (Aug 15th). Will try to come up with my own thread, as time permits.

Regarding diving & snorkeling - you just need to learn breathing with your your mouth under water, using the snorkeling / diving gear on - that's it. No need to be a strong swimmer (of course should have your life vest on, avoid deep places and strong currents).

Great post. Reignited my memories of a wonderful family trip we had in Maldives a few years back. One suggestion to future travelers- Negotiate for an AP meal plan. Basically including all three meals. Separate meals are very expensive and since the resorts are one per island, you have no option but to eat at one of the in-house restaurants.
