Immediately outside Kalka Railway station is the Baptist Church of Kalka. We paid a visit there before moving on.

That Green building under the tree is where you pay taxes for Haryana State. Since Zoom car already has it covered, you can skip visiting them on return.

After a hurried lunch he came running tom me and we did the formalities. It was very quick a receipt for the payment and we are all done. He informed me for the day not much taxis have taken the receipts. He mentioned it could be either the season is dull, or they have the tax already paid, since here the taxes are for a quarter, and not like the daily ones in Punjab. It was approximately Rs600for a quarter. For me since it was May, the receipt was valid till End June.

By 15:45 we were on Himachal roads our way to Shimla
Pretty good timing with relaxed driving from Delhi.

We saw a board stating Kasauli 14Km to left

It was an uninspiring drive, so was getting impatient. Almost 1 Km before Kasauli there seemed to be a pile up. I took that chance and turned back. Quite a wasteful expenditure of time. It was 16:55, 15 minutes for the climb. Another 15 minutes to come down. Overall 30 minutes wasted. I was OK since it was summer, sunlight would be there till 19:00 at least. We still have 2 more hours of sunlight.

We drove on towards Shimla.

We were shocked to see smoke near the highway

But it was really bad in the state those days

We were almost in Shimla. Shimla was another 3Kms ahead. But since we were booked in Mashobra, we took the Shimla Bypass.

Taking Shimla Bye pass to Mashobra.

Left is Shimla 3Kms and right is Shimla Bypass, which joins after Dhalli Tunnel. Good if we have to go ahead of Shimla.

We go under a hotel !!

Entering Shimla and taking bypass

I was pleasantly driving in the bypass when I saw many cars turning left and leaving the bypass. Almost no vehicle went ahead. This made me confused. It was all dark and I too took the plunge of taking that left turn with other cars.

While writing this log, I checked google maps as to what was happening. From the map it is clear that I should have continued ahead on the bypass till Dhalli tunnel exit. But I have taken a short cut to get inside Shimla and then join the Circular road and then to Dhalli Tunnel.

Should have continued on the bypass
Himachal Pradesh: Summer Holidays on the hills, exploring touristy spots & some hidden gems-googlemap20161120_085835.jpg

The left turn took us to Chotta Shimla and joined the Circular road

Himachal Pradesh: Summer Holidays on the hills, exploring touristy spots & some hidden gems-googlemap20161120_090102.jpg

But the ordeal was far more dramatic than this small detour on the maps. The short cut of this 1 kms to Circular road was through crowded narrow streets with two way traffic with steep gradients touching higher figures at places. It was a nightmare to negotiate this 1 Kms. I cannot explain, please see the video. I have kept GPS profiling on which will give you a sense of gradient (the steep climb) and also the track on the video itself.

OMG!! What an ordeal this was! Joining Circular Road from Shimla Bypass

Crowds, on coming traffic, steep gradient and head lamps. I wouldn't want this combination ever again!!

After joining Circular road, we drove ahead to join Sanjauli chowk and then ahead to Dhalli Tunnel. Since it was after 20:00 hours the one way rules there were lifted and we could go towards Dhalli tunnel.

We went ahead to Dhalli tunnel
Himachal Pradesh: Summer Holidays on the hills, exploring touristy spots & some hidden gems-googlemap20161120_115853.jpg

Through Dhalli tunnel

Had we continued on the bypass, we would have joined the junction just after the exit of Dhalli tunnel. Since it was 20:00 hours the traffic was a bit less, and not being on the bypass had not costed us much except for the ordeal at that shortcut.

We had to take a left to Club Mahindra Mashobra

Left to the resort from the highway

The last mile to Club Mahindra Mashobra

We reached the resort by 20:30 hours. We were quickly given the rooms and we settled in immediately.

It was quite nice to see the bed finally!!

What a day it was. Having started at 03:00AM from Bangalore, flying into Delhi and driving for 12 hours, traversing multiple states, and finally hitting the bed at a resort in Mashobra Himachal Pradesh!! I couldn't have asked for more

And that's how we reached Himachal Pradesh. The next days is going to be exploring Himachal Pradesh place by place and trying to avoid the crowds and traffic.

Amazing photos, videos & narration, it never appeared that you were in any sort of hurry.

Can you share more details about the stuff you use?

Thanks Turbonator

I use Garmin Etrex 30x for my GPS needs, driving as well as treks and cycling. It also has India maps loaded and it is possible to do do navigation, but rarely use it for that. I mostly use it to record tracks.

I use Garmin DasCam 35 as a dash camera.

I know exactly what you experienced. My uncle lives in this area (near turn at 2.33 in your video), so I have travelled on this road many times. Driving here is really difficult specially when pedestrian occupy part of the road. For localities its daily routine to drive on such narrow steep roads so its doesn't bother them much.

I returned to this road next day to check it out on another drive. The darkness and headlights added to the whole episode, otherwise its a breeze once you know the terrain. To me the first time it just me unaware

Awesome TL! Inspiring pics, and the fact that you were in an Ecosport gives me a boost to do the same in my Black Mamba at the first possible opportunity! Thanks for the details, will want to seek your advice when plans afoot.

Do give me a shout when you are finalizing your plans. Eco Sport did it quite well. I especially liked the small turning radius on tight scenes
