Default Wildlife Photologue: Nagarhole

26th December 2016

With the year end approaching, increased wildlife spotting at Nagarahole got the urge back in me to visit the forests again.

A quick message on the group and one of my friends wanted to accompany me for the Safaris. As usual a start at 1.30 am and we were off towards Veeranahosahalli gate. Post Mallinathapura (KR Nagara Turn off on the Mysore - Hunsur Road), the fog level increased significantly. Post Hunsur, visibility was less than 15 ft. Since I was very familiar with this route, I could manage to reach the forest check-post by 5.45 am. The gates would not be opened until 6.15 am (daylight breaks around this time) as the previous day a couple of tuskers tried to cross the check-post and it would be pretty dangerous when it is dark.

Reached the Nalikere forest office and took the bus safari. Pretty uneventful and missed the Tigress by a whisker (by assessing the very fresh foot marks.

A few pics from the morning safari.

Post the safari, I drove straight to Damankatte forest office to get tickets for the safari there. Reached there by 9.20 am and I was first in the queue. Booked a double ticket (tickets for both the safaris) and off we went for breakfast. Post breakfast, had a power-nap in the car with the AC keeping us in good comfort. Post lunch we were ready for the afternoon safaris.

The light was fading quickly and it was time to head out of the forests. On the way back, it was almost dark and we spotted something on the side of the forest path. Some one lit up the mobile flash and the unmistakable eyes of the tiger. A huge male tiger less than 10 ft away. No light to capture any pics. It was scent marking and went on its way with utter disdain to 20 odd people close by. No matter how many times you spot a tiger in the wild, each time its a thrilling experience.

21st January 2017

Teambhp Bangalore quick meet was being discussed in the whatsapp group. One of the group members threw an idea of Nagarahole and it was irresistible for me, so gave in. Same start time but with a small change, we went to Damankatte instead of Nagarahole for the morning safari. Reached Damankatte by 5.15 am. With little over an hour to spare, took a power nap.

Pics from morning safari.

Tiger spotting missed thanks to all the JLR vehicles blocking the path. Tiger in the bushes did not come out but was growling away for sometime.

Post the Safari, we waited around for about an hour for the afternoon safari tickets post which we headed to Antharasante for a lovely breakfast (simple home made stuff). Post that we drove through the Nagarahole forests, Tholpetty and back to Damankatte for the afternoon Safari. Had lunch at Tasty times (restaurant name). Sure to its name, the meals with boiled rice tasted really good.

Returned back from Safari around 6.30 pm. Started the drive back home. Topped up fuel in Mysore and stopped over for dinner at Parampare near Srirangapatna. A light drizzle accompanied us from Srirangapatna to Ramanagara. Dropped my friend back at his place at 11.20 pm and I reached home by 11.45 pm.

Lovely snaps Krishna. I have never taken the Damankatte safari, what will be the best modus operandi and the timings to do this, assuming I drive from Bangalore on a Saturday morning

I will drop you a pm.

If possible avoid weekends. Weekdays should be easier to get tickets.

Was a treat to see the photographs. Very well captured. Missed this on my trip through the western ghats.
Just one observation. The bird of prey in post #3 with the langur kill seems like a Crested Hawk eagle and not a crested serpent eagle.

What made you to prefer Damankatte over Nagarhole National Park? Is Damankatte part of Nagarhole. Can u please elaborate as I plan to visit Tholpetty and Nagarhole.

Glad to see so many vultures out there. Good photography.

Nothing Special as such. I take the morning safari in Nagarahole and Damankatte safari in the afternoon. Primary reason being not able to get tickets for Morning Safari at Damankatte (for morning safari, you need to take tickets at 4 pm the previous day).

Nagarahole has 3 Government safaris happening in the one from Damankatte side (Eastern side or the back waters side of Nagarahole Reserve) and 1 from Veeranahosahalli Side (from Hunsur side) and 1 from Kutta Side (Nelikere Forest range side). Both Veeranahosahalli and Nelikere are towards the western part of the Nagarahole Reserve.
