Smile Video: Driving through the Canadian Rockies in a Dodge Ram 1500 (5.7L Hemi V8)

Hello Team,

A few weeks back was in Canada for a holiday & had the opportunity to film & narrate the scenic drive through the Canadian Rockies (Calgary > Banff > Lake Louise > Jasper > Whistler > Vancouver);

The video includes;

Exploring the National Park area;

Finding a prospective BHPian;

Stoppages on some of the Glacial Lakes;

A lot of such views along the ICEFIELDS PARKWAY;

& pointing out some quirks;

All of this in a proper old school pick up truck;

My Canadian Rockies Itinerary;

- I flew down to Calgary from Toronto & arrived at Calgary Airport in the morning around 8 am. From the airport itself i picked up the RAM 1500.
- I had actually booked a Toyota Camry with Hertz (No Pick Up Truck selection available online) hoping they would have some pick up truck in their inventory (As Airports usually have the best mix of vehicles available) & thankfully they did have a couple of Ram 1500's (both showroom fresh).
- The girl over the counter was surprised to see my request that i want a pick up truck
- Upon reaching Banff (1 night halt) i was staying at Elk & Avenue Hotel which i recommend highly as its on the Banff Avenue (Main Street where most restaurants & shopping is located).
- The next day i was off to Lake Louise which was about 30 kms away from Banff & there i was staying at the beautiful Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise property. Highly recommended as the location seems right out of a fairytale.
- The next day it was time to drive down the Icefields Parkway, which is considered one of Worlds most scenic drives.
- This route is about 250 kms long & you can cover in about 4 hours, but considering the scenery & so many stoppage points its best to keep a couple of hours extra handy.
- The Icefields parkway took us to Jasper & i was staying at Mount Robson Inn which is in the National Park area, again 1 night halt here.
- The next day i was off to Whistler which was in British Columbia & this was the longest drive of this journey, aprox 750 kms.
- I was staying at Fairmont Chateau Whistler, again a beautiful hotel to stay in which offered excellent hospitality.
- My total stay in Whistler was for 2 nights & here you can visit the famous Whistler & Blackcomb mountains, great restaurants & was dominated by sport activities (specially mountain biking) Missed out on winter sport activities though.
- Last destination was Vancouver which was a short journey (aprox 120 kms), but scenic as the road connecting both was called the sea to sky highway.
- I was staying at Hyatt Regency which was a beautiful hotel & the room sizes were generous considering it was located in Downtown Vancouver.
- Did Whale watching in Vancouver the next day & a shopped at one of the premium outlets the next day.
- Returned the Truck back at Vancouver airport for a flight back to Toronto.
- Will upload pictures & write ups of all the destinations one by one onto the thread for everyones reference & understanding.

Other Facts;

- All National Parks were free as it was 150th year of Independence for Canada.
- Driving in Canada was equally easy & the rules were the same as of USA.
- Three of the four best-selling vehicles in Canada are pickup trucks.
- While driving from Jasper to Whistler i gained 1 hour, which was a first time experience for me in a road trip.
- Whistler is a town which had hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics.
- Parking at the Fairmont properties was expensive (aprox CAD$ 20/day), other places like Banff, Jasper was free. But again upon arrival in Downtown Vancouver i had to pay CAD$ 25/Day in Hyatt.

Dodge Ram 1500;

Specifications;

5.7L HEMI V8
Power - 395 HP
Torque - 555 NM

- The car was showroom fresh when i picked it up from Calgary Airport with only 55 km on the odo.
- Huge Cabin gives enormous space & a great cockpit view is a ego booster.
- Popularity of the Ram is more compared to its closest rival the Ford F-150.
- V8 rumble is again irreplaceable.
- Gear change buttons on the steering was a 1st for me.
- With a wheel size of 20" the ride quality was still spot on (Thanks to the meaty tyres - 275/60 R20)
- Though being a 4x4 it generally rides in the RWD mode on regular tarmac.
- The gearbox was 8 speed A/T.
- Fuel Economy was fairly decent for the size & power thanks to the gearbox.
- Also i think it had cylinder deactivation.
- NO Parking sensors was a big downer.

Rental Details;

- Rental Company was Hertz.
- Duration of rental was 7 days.
- Picked up from Calgary Airport & Dropped at Vancouver Airport.
- Aprox INR 7k/Day
- Unlimited kms Included

Oh man, cruising in a V8 pickup truck in North America! Can't get more local / American than that. Must be quite an experience. These trucks feel very special to drive; something about their size, character & styling.

How about summarising the driving experience in bullet points (for those of us who prefer text over video ).

Also, do you make your wife hold the camera on all holidays? What's her reaction, or do you have to make up with shopping trips later ?

Many thanks for sharing, added to our homepage.

Excellent work there Karan. That is one monster of a car that you got there. The views are stunning and isn't it too common to sight a bear in those regions, akin to sighting elephants over here? Anyways, who gets to be your photographer?

Indeed ! I always wanted to drive the countryside in a proper American Pick Up truck & always visualised myself doing this kinda road trip, glad that this materialised.

Done !

She has been quite supportive, special thanks to her all this is possible.

YES, plus the added loading bed advantage of a pick-up truck

But on a serious note, Canada is a great place to shop thanks to 1CAD$ = < 50 INR.

Thanks ! Well, you still need to be lucky to spot a bear as the landscape out there is huge so there is no guarantee to come across one during each visit.

My Wife & the Go-Pro mount for this one

That's an awesome journey & experience you shared here Karan !

I didn't know something like this was even remotely possible; driving left hand drive in an North American Country, in a monster of a vehicle in an amazingly beautiful countryside !

The video quality ( Go Pro as you're saying ) & the commentary is crisp & clear !

Kudos !!!

Karan, I envy your driving skills. The ease with which you adapt to the opposite side driving system, drove a monster in a different country and also kept on with the running commentary explaining all details so well, is really great!

Hi, firstly welcome to TEAM-BHP

Well, yes have visited Canada a few times before & have adapted to driving a LHD over the years pretty well so driving a huge truck like this was not an issue in such open areas.

The only issue was clearance (height) but more on that later.

Great video Karan! Enjoyed watching it. I'm planning to drive through the Rockies on the other side of the border in Montana and Washington states this summer though it's not as scenic as Canadian side. After watching your video, I'm planning to drop the plan and instead get a tourist visa and drive in Canadian rockies. I was surprised to see the speedometer readings in kmph. I never knew Canada followed the metric system.

Great Videos Thanks for sharing.

Last year I drove from Seattle to Jasper National Park and then to Banff National Park via the Icefield Parkway. Entered USA via Roosville Immigration and then to Glacier National Park driving the "Going to the Sun Road".

Earlier I have driven the Rockies ranges in the States of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho in USA. But I found the scenery very beautiful in British Columbia and Alberta in Canada compared to USA.

A pic from my drive in Icefield Parkway. I rented a Ford Fusion from Seattle Airport.

Nice video.

Can you elaborate about the height related issues while driving such truck?

Clearance (Height) Issues;

Definitely the Ram 1500 is a TALL TRUCK, hence gettin it in some of the parking areas was tricky.

Here my hotel valet helped raise the clearance bar to let the truck in;
