Smile 903 kms in 15.5 hours, Lets Go !!!

The Prologue
I had got married in Feb this year & me & wifey had not been to our home town since then so a visit was planned for May-June. In the last week of May my wifey was reaching Bhopal (our hometown) & I was supposed to reach at the end of the next week. Luckily I got leaves sanctioned for the whole week (earlier it was just Thursday, Friday). Didn’t inform wifey since finding reservation on short notice was impossible but after seeing my wife off from Pune station I started thinking about driving down instead of looking for any other means of transport.

The Planning
I knew that by rail route the distance between Pune-Bhopal was 895 kms. The general route was to go to Nashik & then join NH3 till Indore & then to Bhopal but from my previous experiences I knew that this route is very bad once you enter MP. Called up a friend who had done Pune-Indore by car he suggested the route which I liked & finalized on it.

Since this was supposed to be surprise told a few friends here & informed Dad that I am coming early on 2nd of June But didn’t tell him that am driving down, I told him that am coming by train :P

The Night Before the Journey
My car (Alto LXi 2005) was serviced recently so all I had to do was to get her fueled & that’s it. Collected & kept all my CDs as they were the ones who would keep me company in this solo & adventurous journey I was being told that though this route is good there are not many dhabas & eating places so decided to stack myself some food, so got following stuff:
- 5 Burgers from McDonalds (I am Lovin it :-D)
- 4 packets of Lays
- 1.2 ltr bottle of Maza
- 4.5 litre of drinking water

I know it was a bit too much but I dint want to take any chances & it did help :-)

Had numerous calls\sms from fellow Bhpians Shrivz & Moral about a meet at that very night but avoided it as it was in the other part of the city & didn’t want to miss on sleep since was planning to start early. Sorry Guys :(

So packed my bags & slept at around 11

The Journey
On 2nd June 2007 I woke up at around 3:15 got fresh, took all the stuff down & packed the car. At around 4:30 am I left from by apartment.

I had planned to take the following path

Pune-->Ahmednagar-->Aurangabad-->Jalgaon-->Bhusaval-->Burhanpur-->Khandwa-->Indore-->Bhopal

The road were good couldn’t speed much initially due to low light was cruising at 80 with 100-120 once in a while. The journey was fine till Aurangabad where I somehow missed the way to Jalgaon &somehow took the route which goes to Jalna, called up my friend & realized he had warned me about directions which I forgot end result I traveled almost 50 kms extra, but on this route I didn’t need to go to Jalgaon & went directly to Bhusaval so my journey became like this (thankfully no further goof ups)

Pune-->Ahmednagar-->Aurangabad-->Jalna-->Bhusaval-->Burhanpur-->Khandwa-->Indore-->Bhopal

The worst part was the Bhusaval to Indore as the temperatures were soaring in MP, Had put ac on so the car wasn't puling as good as before hence the fatigue started to grow on me. Took a breather at one toll booth for around 5 mins felt somewhat better.

As Indore was nearing my plans to reach Bhopal in One day seemed difficult. I had an option to stay overnite at Indore since my Chacha's house was there but I didn’t want to take a break. When I reached the outer ring road for Indore (It was 4:45 pm & I had done 700 kms), I decided to take break & then decide whether I wanted to continue my journey to Bpl or take a break. took small nap for around 15 mins. Sent a sms to my Dad that I have reached Indore, He called up surprised & got a shock when he came to know that I drove down that too all alone :P anyways told him that will reach Bpl at a sweet pace since I had already traveled so much.

Left at 5:00 for Bpl, had decided to go easy but somehow that 15 min break freshened me so much that I was all fresh & thanks to the good roads reached my home at Bhopal at exactly 8:00 pm.

I had put my trip meter to reset when I started from home at Pune & the reading at my Bpl home read 903 :-)

In all took two fuel breaks & a couple of pee breaks.

The Surprise was a big & good one for my Mom, Wifey & In-laws :-)

I returned back with wifey on 10th & this time the route taken was shorter & was as following

Bhopal--> Hoshangabad-->Betul road-->Khandwa-->Burhanpur-->Galgaon-->Auranagabad-->Ahmednagar-->Pune

We left at 5:00 am & reached Pune at 7:30 & at home at 8:15 pm, we had done 815 kms as per the trip meter. We Took 2 fuel stops & one 1.5 hours lunch break @ Jalgaon.

There are lot of toll booths in MP around 5-6 one after another & 2-3 in MH.

No punctures or failures of any kind during the journey or at Bhopal. The Alto truely lives upto its Lets Go image. I really Love my car

Few Pics

Techno!! Nice report and good pictures. When we once drove to Indore it was almost nightfall and there is a section where cops dont let you drive alone and arrange for convoys escorted by police cars instead, which section is this? Dont they do this during day time?

Hmm.. nice. Must have been quite a drive going there all alone. But in the end the look on the family's face makes it worth it

Excellent trip Techno....Ya, Alto is such a car you will always fall in love with.... No matter people will shout for power power n power but Alto silently does his job in that limitation....
If u drive with AC for longer time, I dont think u will face any pulling power either...

Wow! Well done technocrat! Great writeup. I liked it. Glad your alto didn't let you down and took you safely and problem free. What was the mileage you got on this trip?

Btw, great pictures and driving 900 km in that much of time is just astounding for me.

A

Thanks Guys

@sks: yeah the look on their face was realy worth all the effort :-)

@akroy: Yes its really a very potent car. The car also felt good as I had got a K&N replacement filter last month only & that did help a lot with ac on.

@CrazyDriver: Thansk Buddy. The pics from car are from my return journey & were taken by my wife

@Dippy: You bet I did :P Sorry thats all the pics I took, I didnt stop much to take pics :-)

@Suman: Thanks, I am glad you liked it :-)

@Absar: Thanks, Yes Absolutely no issues faced. The mileage varried from as low as 15.3kpl to 16.9 this includes driving with ac & keeping the needle ahead of 100 mark most of the time :-)

Nice trip techno. Would have surprised quite a few people to have taken out such a long journey for the first time. The Team-BHP effect, eh ?

Well - it looks like the Alto is fast replacing the Safari for long-distance drives! Good writeup

@el: Thanks Man. No I have done long trips before but this was the first solo one :-) Yeah the expression on people's face was worth all the effort. TBhp effect not exactly.. I love to do such trips

Travelogue (When Lonavla Became Hyderabad :D)

@manikjeet: Mileage depends highly on the way you drive, I am rarely light foot on highways i.e. when I Say 100+ I mean I was doing 120-130. Also this very Alto returns me 17-18 kpl with 40% ac in City, yes you read it right I always get more mileage in city than on Highway :-)

@Mag: Yeah its a sweet thing to drive though not as comfortable as a big car(read more power less fatigue) but good enough for 2-3 people with luggage

Nice drive Techno!

reminds me of the Bangalore Pune solo trip that I did on my Karizma. I was planning to halt for the evening at Kolhapur at a friends house, when I met up with two crazy mallus (no offense to mallus, but the guys were crazy) at the Hubli BPCL COCO on the highway. These guys were on their way from Trivandrum to Pune on a puny Honda Activa (with a large can behind as their reserve!)! I met them at about 1:30 or so, and they expected to reach pune by 9 in the night. They took one look at me and my bike and said - you'll reach pune by 7! That got my adrenalin flowing and I was in Pune by 6:30 pm. Left bangalore at 5:30 in the morn and was in pune in 13 hours!

830 odd kms in only 13 hours!! I'm not going to do it again!
