Default Part II - On the road to Inuvik and beyond

After lengthy preparations (Part I - Preparation for San Francisco - Inuvik - Puerto Toro - Buenos Aires) we are finally underway! The first rest day on the road was at Seattle. What a lovely city:

As we head North into Canada the weather is palpably different. Here is the view coming down Stone Mountain:

After many days on the road we finally take a break in the small town of Dawson. We need to rest up for the challenge of the Dempster Highway in winter:

The Dempster Highway is one of the unique driving experiences in the world. In the summer it can chew through tires an in the winter blizzards can bury large trucks, but there are rewards. Like this sunrise:

Snow covered hills look like big sand dunes, only made of snow:

As soon as we crossed the border into the North West Territories we were greeted with a whiteout. This picture was taken shortly afterwards:

Since the MacKenzie river ice crossing was not ready we had to fly to Inuvik. Here is the Igloo Church in the winter:

Between Fort McPherson and Eagle Plains is a notorious section the locals call "Hurricane Alley". It has a very even climate: always bad. We were lucky to experience white-out only for brief periods:

I would highly recommend the Dempster in the winter for those looking for a bit of adventure that is not too overwhelming. With good preparation the chances of a bad outcome are practically nil.

After hurricane alley the weather cleared up:

Currently hangin' in Dawson...

Super, duper pics Shreesh! Looks like you guys are having fun!

I was just reading about the Dempster highway in a recent issue of C&D where John Phillips did the trip in a Corvette & wrote a really amusing (with him that's de rigour) story about it! It ain't easy is all I can say!

Have fun on the rest of the trip & Best of Luck!

It has been fun, but NOT very relaxing. We have to be aware at all times and there are very few other motorists to render assistance. The drive can become a winter survival experience real quick.
