Arrow Quick Report -ahmedabad - Bangalore

Hai PPL,

Just a quick update on the road conditions and my drive from
Ahmedabad to Bangalore. Had lots of inputs from HV Kumar, was
very useful to cross from Godebander to Pune expressway. Saved
his KML files frame by frame in JPG on the laptop and my wife
was able to navigate turn-by-turn perfect to the T in not so
very femiliar and messy Mumbai traffic.

Started from Ahmedabad 0500 AM on 8th morning, Baroda Express
highway exit - 108 KM - 615am, road surface bad from hereon ,
traffic blocks for next 94 kms - reached nyay mandir - 0800 am, road
work in progress all the way from here till Surat for the next
79 KMs (totally about 173 KMS from Baroda exit)heavy blocks on
the way, chaios and the blocks can be anywhere between 3-4
hours. We were lucky, drove on the left shoulder of the road
for about 40 kms on the edge, they have left that for small
vehicles, sedans will rip bottom, only jeeps /suv's can go.
Road fentastic after Baleswar, we reached - 1015 am (so from
Baroda exit to Baleswar 173 kms, 615am to 1015, 4 hours with
braekfast break at Nyay Mandir for 45 mts) 4 track all the way
to Manor for the next 243 KMS, from there to hotel fountain 28
kms rough surface, trucks twisting left /right to avoid
craters. Lunch @ braek for 1 hr there and took directions
from HVk again on the phone.

Start from H.Fountain 226PM reading 524 KM, express highway
entry 0400 PM - 611 kms, Coffee break at food plaza 15 mts,
Pune express highway exit - 0530 pm, 676 kms, stop to wait for
Dr.Mandar Ketkar on Pune BP end, 696 kms, 0600 pm to 0625
pm, stop at Hotel Mahendra at Satara 0800 pm, 808 kms.
Met a friend Mandar on the highway, .

09-11-07: Start from Mahendra 0555 am, 0 kms, coffee break -
95 kms, 15 mits, 0715 am, hevy fog, 15 feet visibility from
Kini toll plaza (around Balgaum)104 kms, 725 am, till Hattagri
toll palza @ 202 kms, 0840 am, gps was very useful to see
turns on the road and to watch out for cross roads/road junctions,
slowed down here. After Kittur the BP of Dharwr and Hubli is
amazing, single track but great for about 100 kms. Reached
reliance A1 plaza, 20 kms past Hubli @ 1105 am.
Bad section starts 415 kms onwrds, 1150 AM, some sections only
gravel for 500 mtrs, good roads sandwitched between bad ones
and sudden spead breakers and no clear signages. Trucks and
cars weaving in and out to avoid craters, bad roads etc.
Absolutely not to be done @ night at all. This goes on till
Ranibennur @ 449 kms @ 1255 am. This bad section of 35 kms
takes away the pleasure of the great roads, makes you feel on
edge and leaves a very bad taste. From Tumkur toll plaza @ 698
am @ 340 pm, road is 4 track and great till Bangalore.

Special word of thanks to HV Kumar, TBHP members and yahoo
Scorpio fans club for the directions and help. The through ring road
a Bangalore to HAL was a life saver for me to reach home spot-on.

Will be going south till Trivandrum, will post logs later on
the fly.

CAR : M&M - Scorpio CRDE - ODO: 7390.

One fact that Ramky forgot to add is that the Baroda-Surat road was in wrose conditions a few weeks ago, but have been patched up. The last 30 kms approaching Ghodbunder (before Bombay) were virtually non-existent, but are now OK. Repair works are in full progress on the bad stretches in NH4 and I guess in the next 2 weeks you should see it reasonably OK despite teh messy construction.

NH17 that gets damaged during rains on the Kasargod-Mangalore-Udupi-Kundapur stretch normally, is also repaired by end-Nov, and I am sure we can get back to pleasant motoring thereafter

Hai Ketan,

With TBHP you would have all the info in the world you need.

I am useing Destinator on Satguide on a PDA + GPS receiver combo. The all India Map, NH 4 was accurate only 70 % of the time. The Bangalore map was spot-on and a great help to know the roads etc., it's relatively well marked on the landmarks roads etc., but a little dated on the latest updates changes.

Arrow Reached Terichendur

Hai TBHpers,

From Tanjore, did the Navagraha and temple circuit for 2 days, about 320 KMS per day. Without a guide it's not possible to cover the Navagraha temples in 2 days. The roads surfaces are OK, except near Velankanni, the section where the East Coast road is being made.

From Tanjore we drove to Rameswaram, stayed for 2 days, the road was OK 80% of the way, surface smooth. At Rameswaram we had to hire a jeep to go to the end of the land on a 4WD jeep, it was one great off roading experience through sand, sand dunes and slushy sea shores for 11 kms, reached the end of the land, from there its 18 kms to Sri Lanka. Great photos coming up later once I sit down and do the logs.

Today from Rameswaram reached Terubdur, had to take the Arupukottai, Tutocorin road, 100 KMS more than the costal road, well worth the effort. The surface was very smooth and we could do the distance of 260 kms in 5 hours even with the road widening going on and traffic bottlenecks in some places. The costal road from Rameswaram to Terichendur is non-existant, very bad, advise not to take it.

More reports coming up later.

Happy Driving,

--Ramky
