The bland colourless land, whose people wear every conceivable colour, men in little frocks and women behind veiled faces. Little boys singing in high pitched voices to the beat of bells tied to camels tails...
The sarangi played by wizened old men with beards yellowed by the sands of time...

The smell of fresh dal with bati, covered in pure ghee, the ghevar that will follow shortly after... Buss thoda aur lelo bauji, buss thoda sa, koi nai, buss ek roti.
Those roti eaten with chillies and onions, the huge green chilli wrapped in potatoes and fried like a vada...
The smell of clean cotton in the air mixed with camel dung. Fresh buffalo milk, all frothy and fragrant.
That guy with his female donkey, going from door to door asking if anyone has a cold and wants donkey milk.
Where water is often more precious than gold..

The women dressed in fluorescent green and bright pink with those completely impossible armbands. The sound of Banna re being sung in some part of the village.
That smell that tells you that you now stand in the great Thar. The ruins of the Maharanas and the Maharajas that stand around you.

You should go to Rajasthan for a lot more than its music.
Beautiful, beautiful!

They say, a picture speaks a thousand words. In this case, your words have painted more than thousand pictures, more beautiful than the ones you posted.

Ditto with Jenny. I simply love the way she has taken to the word 'Arrey'.

This is an incredible thread.

both, really. I am far too old & fragile to attempt something like that, would have hired a porter instead.
But good on you farhan for being the pefect host.
I remember we used to do the same thing when relatives come from out of town. Guess this is part of our culture & tradition.
Receiving them in Egmore was a lot more easier those days with the drive in facility. We could drive right next to the train & pick up the luggage.

Default YetiBlog® - 3rd April 2008 - Chennai to The Dune

Wake up to a wonderful breakfast at Sideways' (Farhan) home.

A YetiHoliday® - TheOne® visits India for the first time.-dsc_0286_thumb.jpg

After breakfast, it is time to leave for the East Coast Road - to go to The Dune - an eco beach hotel enroute to Pondicherry.

-----------------
The Dune is one of the most beautiful resorts in India. French-owned, no 2 rooms are the same.
With Interesting names like The Bangle Room and The Jungle Room, The Dune combines modern decor senses with some kitschy old advertisements and Tamil themes.
Truly eco friendly in every sense, they grow organic veggies and farm in the old fashioned organic way. The rooms are exquisite with many having open to the sky bathrooms and amazing materials used for decor. Beautiful is an understatement and Farhan had chosen some fantastic rooms for us at this 56 acre resort.
The resort is practically to big to be explored on foor. The staff will either take you around in their golf carts or you can borrow bicycles from them. One can learn pottery, how to milk a cow and much more at this place. It has a sparse feel, but is truly a luxurious 5 star resort.
Organic in every sense, there is no cabling here, none for TV and none for phones. Upon check in you are presented with a reliance cellphone and the room has a DVD player - many movies on request. Though why someone would visit the dune and choose to watch a DVD is beyond me.
They have private access to a beautiful little beach with wonderful blue water.
Truly, words fail me when it comes to describing this place. Truly gorgeous.
The Dune is about 40kms away from Pondicherry.
---------------------

We leave in Farhan's scorpio. True to his form, he performs the once-over before we leave.

The Scorpio's AC vents have been modified by him and quite successfully so. The flow is better and now can be rotated 360 degs.

There are 4 of us, 2 couples. Farhan and his lovely wife, Jenny and I.

Everyone is in a great mood and we anticipate a lovely time.

A YetiHoliday® - TheOne® visits India for the first time.-dsc_0302_thumb.jpg

Enroute to the ECR we stop over at (Surprise, surprise) Thad E. Ginathom's home. A short meeting turns out to be very interesting. We leave with the intention to return on our way back - unfortunately this doesn't happen.

Soon we're at the ECR taking in the coast with our eyes and breathing in the fresh sea air.

Default YetiBlog® - 3rd April 2008 - The Dune - Day 1

We've reached in the early evening.
We finish the check in formalities.

That is the reception.

A YetiHoliday® - TheOne® visits India for the first time.-dsc_0435_thumb.jpg

Soon the electric car takes us to our rooms. We are staying in the Garden Rooms 3 and 4. Farhan and his wife have been here before, they decide to rest for a while in their room.
Jenny and I change quickly and decide to hit the beach. I can understands Jenny's urge to see the sea, sun and sand. It's not something she gets back home.
Speaking of room, ours is bloody GORGEOUS!

We change quickly and start walking towards the pool area where the beach access is.

It's not beautiful. It is stunning!
Look to the left of that gate, at the cluster of trees. Look in between them is a full bed with fresh linen on it. We discover many such beds lying in the midst of nature, free for use either for a relaxing nap or perhaps an evening soiree with someone you love.

Believe me, it does not take us long to hit the saltwater.
A YetiHoliday® - TheOne® visits India for the first time.-dsc_0460_thumb.jpg

After sunset, we take a quick open shower and hit the swimming pool. Farhan and his wife join us shortly.
Unfortunately I do not have any evening pictures of the swimming pool that I can show you, but it is an edgeless pool and it is beautiful.

We swim for a while and then retire to our rooms to change. Later we all sit in the garden outside our room and merrily chat away over a drink.
Soon it's dinner time.

A YetiHoliday® - TheOne® visits India for the first time.-dsc_0488_thumb.jpg

A YetiHoliday® - TheOne® visits India for the first time.-dsc_0493_thumb.jpg

Dinner is wonderful, truly. Time to say our goodnights.
Jenny and I spend time talking in our room. The atmosphere here is super special.
I admire the kitsch on the walls - some of this is amazing stuff.

Day 13 of our truly wonderful trip is over. We're in one of the most beautiful resorts in the world with our good friends.

Once again I am reminded of how wonderful life is.

Tarrifs and details here

The dogs belonged to the resort - a labrador and a dalmatian. They were busy trying to make it a smaller world free of race or colour, exactly like TheOne® and TheYeti® lol

Sam, the pool pic is damn good. Perhaps it is one of the best pics (the pic of that well in Rajasthan being the other) of the travelogue for me.
