Default 8 years, 1.55lakh km, and a 1650km Delhi-Pune run

The car: http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/long-t...?highlight=zen (1,47,658 km Zen Mpfi report + drift and slide pics)

Last weekend, I was in Delhi. I had been thinking about getting my 2000 Zen MPFI from Delhi to Pune, and dropping it further down in Davanagere soon.

So, instead of flying back to Pune, it was decided to drive all the way down to Pune. Not a good idea as I found out after 31hours!

Saturday,9:15am : Left my place in Paschim Vihar
9:50am : Picked up a friend from Ashoka Road
10:30am : Hit the NH8. Had an easy time through the new toll booth on the newly constructed expressway

Kept a constant 100-105 on the speedo. A 1.55Lakh km car does feel old. Didnt take anychances. As we hit Manesar, came across small road blocks. Found it, locals were distributed sweet lassi (some festival?). Lost a good 30min thru 3 such stops.

1:10pm : Crossed Jaipur. Car felt nice.
1:20pm : Stopped for water and fag. The Jaipur-Kishangarh stretch is awesome. Speeds increased to 105-110

Left NH8 at Kishangarh, took a left towards Chittor. Had lunch enroute at A1 plaza. Filled fuel too, got 16.1kmpl (including around 35km in Delhi, A/c always on). After the fuel stop, realised I wasnt carrying enough cash (these pumps hardly take cards). Plus, a peculiar metal sound starting comin from right wheel. Carried on, dipped speeds to 85-90.
SBI rocks - found an ATM in the middle of nowhere.
Bad roads 30km before Chittor. Avg speeds dipped to 35-40km/h. Finally found our way to the Udaipur roads. Sound was still there, increased speeds to 105-110km/h.

7:30pm : Reached Udaipur, with odometer reading around 700kms. It got dark too.
Curvy roads to Ahmedabad, but rains made matters worse. Lighting wasnt good enuf. Picked up water and snacks.
The motor blowing the Air probably became hot, so switched off the A/C. heard a small bursting sound, seconds later, the car is moving all over the curve. Front left tyre gone. Changed the tyre. Later found out that the tyre burst, and the spare tyre was as old as the car - 8 years!

Stopped at no less than 6 puncture shops for a spare tyre. No luck. Finally found one near Himatnagar. Purchased a 70 profile (zen runs on 80) tyre for 100 bucks! Had dinner there too. Car returned 17kmpl.

11:30pm : Continued for Ahmedabad.
12:45pm : Passed Ahmedabad. Very sleepy. Hit the expressway. Decided to sleep just after the toll booth. With the A/c on, car parked on side under the lights, slept for 30min. Carried on

1:30pm : No luck. Still sleepy. Somehow drove till saw some streetlights and slept for 2.5hrs.

It was almost 4:45pm by the time we passed Vadodra. Then the mess started. The Vadodra-Surat stretch was horrible. Rains made matters worse. Road work going on. Avg speeds down to 45-50 all the way to Surat. Friend drove, i slept, coming out of sleep every now and then. Car still running on an 8 year old tyre!

Woke up when we stopped at a place called "Desi Dhaba". Drove from there on. Car returned 16 kmpl (the A/c ran for 2.5hrs while we slept)

Finally hit Virar at around 1pm. Took a left, bypassed Mumbai thru Thane. Hit Panvel by 2:15. Picked up burgers from Mcdonalds. The 8year tyre now had bulges. The steering was wobbling, so was the car. Drove at 70km/h thru out to Pune. 10km before my place, the tyre gave way. it burst. Put on the 100rupee tyre. Drove Home. Finally by 4:30pm.

In short, an adventurous drive. Total of 1650km. The 8year old car still rocks. 31hrs in all. Slept on the road, ate in the smallest of dhabas, rode on the baldest of tyres!

Still have 560km more to go to Davanagere next week. The car gets new tyres and a new windshield tomm. Y? It had a small crack before leaving Delhi and by the time we got to Pune, the cracks were all over the right side - bad roads to be blamed

Good fun.

But sorry, this is not adventure for the Bunny of yore. Cmon Buns, you know what real adventure is.

Speaking of which, when are you riding to Leh?

His wife's doing advanced studies for there. She's a doctor, IIRC.

Sleepin in the car with AC on, especially in an 8 year old. Is this safe (carbon monoxide emission and stuff) ?

Were both of you sleeping ?

Probably had his vent in fresh air mode while sleeping. No issues on this mode, I think, unless someone stands near the engine vent and keeps farting continually

phamilyman : rains, running on an 8year old tyre, two bursts, covering the expressway on a bulged tyre : recipe for adventure it is. Comeon.. as for Leh: The passes will close by oct, still a lotta time on hand
akroy : Wife, M.DS
Eddy : yeah, both were sleeping. As explained by vnabhi, the CO2 thing happens if the car is parked in a closed area. The winds were quite fast by the way... We both survived

whitesquall : No, i dont write for the heck of it. Correct me if im wrong, lotta team-bhpians travel on NH8 and well as NH4. I just thought of giving a quickie on how the route is. Nothing wrong in that, right?

phamilyman : He he he.. between, just got two new tyres. The car feel better. Windscreen replacement will be done tomm. Heard its raining cats and dogs down south, lets see how the 1145 (the car reg no) handles south india's monsoons
