Default A weekend getaway to Himachal with 2 sweethearts !

My first travelogue on Tbhp, so please bear with my inexperienced narration. It was long pending outing and even I wanted a break from my office hectic schedule, but the main driving force behind this getaway was a free holiday voucher from Countrywide , for a airline ticket that I had booked decades ago. We didn’t want to go to Shimla as its very crowded, we preferred a more isolated hill station. Very reluctantly, we decided on the tentative dates for Chail, and finally there was a confirmation from the agency that bookings were confirmed. So we finally decided to make use of the voucher and head for Chail on August 28th. This travelogue is mainly focused on my car, as this is first official photo session opportunity I got with her after I recently upgraded to new alloys and tires. I was also supported well by the Philips Rally headlights, it performed well during the night drives and I am very satisfied.

Initially we had decided that we would start off from Delhi on Thursday midnight to beat the traffic chaos. But by the time I returned from office, I was dead tired and decided against driving the whole night without sleep, as I wanted to enjoy the drive. So slept for a couple of hours and finally started off at 4 am Friday morning. We quickly reached the highway and in no time we were out of Delhi, thanks to the very light traffic during the morning hours.

We stopped at Karnal for breakfast, our first halt.

After grabbing a quick bite, we start off again. One of my friend was also on a trip to Palampur, and we decided to stop after the Karnal toll-gate for a quick rendezvous.

We continued on, crossed zirakhpur before the traffic mess began and reached the mountains. For Chail, we had to break off from Kandaghat and followed the small road leading to the hill station. The road to Chail from Kandaghat is very narrow, and the tarmac is mostly broken. It was barely wide for two vehicles, one vehicle has to stop and give way to the opposite traffic. But the traffic on this road is very light, we hardly encountered more than a couple of cars on the entire stretch of about 30kms to Chail.

We spot a fort on the way, maybe a upcoming hotel.

We reached the Hotel and slept the entire afternoon as we were exhausted, we planned to start sightseeing the next day.

Our hotel at night.

A precautionary measure incase of emergency, a tow rope with clamps.

Frankly there is nothing much to see in Chail, it’s a small and beautiful hill station, and very less crowded which is why we came here. We went to see the World’s highest cricket ground.

While returning, the sky quickly darkened and we were engulfed in rain clouds. I stopped for a quick photo shoot.

The rain stopped quickly and we decided to head for Kufri-Shimal and return back. Kufri is about 25kms from Chail and Shimla about 45 kms. Even though its not a huge distance, driving through the mountains in the small roads can be a cumbersome task, as most of the road is gravel with small potholes.

On the way to Kufri.

Does this qualify as a off-roading ?

We returned back to Chail in the evening. The road was very desolate and pitch black, I was beginng to worry as the night grew and to add to the concern, it started to rain along with heavy fog, thankfully we reached our hotel without any incident.

The next day we headed back to Delhi at around 11am, we only stopped at Sadhupul for a quick photo-shoot.

And finally reached Delhi at around 8pm. Thankfully we did not encounter any traffic at any point.

Hope you all enjoyed my modest travelogue.

Cheers.

Nice travelogue mate. Kandaghat to Chail is one of the most romantic drives I have ever had in life. The villages look like pages out of those childhood fairy tale books. We came across a couple of vehicles like you and lots of sheep. But the road wasn't as bad as you encountered. And of course the last five km or so to Kufri the road condition didn't matter because it was under a foot deep snow
Nice pictures too. Thanks for sharing

Great pictures and nice travelogue!!

The photos reminded me of my trip to Shimla, Kulu, Manali during College days. I remember that the roads were narrow with landslides - we were stuck for long because of a major landslide. But the beauty of the place was worth all the effort.

Thanks for sharing. The wagon R looks lovely with those alloys and fog lamps. The best wagon R I have seen.

Thanks. The gear was a "ahem" Canon Powershot S3 IS, Hoya CIR polarizing filter and a tripod only for the pics I could not shoot. Tried to make best use of whatever I could.

Thanks. Yeah, the road is not so bad as I might have mentioned, it is drivable, but yes enjoyable. I drove leisurely at around 20-25kmph.

Thanks, thats a huge compliment. So I can safely say that the upgrade was worth the investment.

Well, the main motivating factor for me behind this trip was also tbhp. I always enjoyed driving, travelling and photography, and tbhp gave me the push.
