It should definitely be added that's by far the best scenic road I Have been in .And trust me we drive all over India.
After enjoying the road so much you wouldn't be disappointed because again Pondicherry is so beautiful.

I also liked the Road from Goa via The Karwar cost.

That's a nice todo list. Is it possible to have the corresponding NH numbers against each route. That way people with less knowledge (like me) will find it easier to look up on a map. Unfortunately I have done only one of these.

Infact I would say Baroda to Jaipur, the complete stretch of almost 800 kms is a pleasure to drive (on NH76 & NH79 from Udaipur to Kishangarh)

I did this a few days back and could cover the complete distance in 10 hrs, including 5 small chai paani stops. I got an average speed of 80kmph and thats without going over 120kmph even once.

The quality of road and the quality of traffic is excellent in this stretch. The toll booths though there are around 13 of them en route are mostly empty and never too time consuming.

Regards

Have done three of them so far. Seven more to go.. Two planed next year.

If Speed,Drivers delight is the criteria, one should add Belgaum - Kholapur section as well. Absolute belter.

Deky.

Rajasthan & Gujrat definitely have the best roads in the country but don't you think they are too boring to be done again ? with no scenery and roads which are straight as an arrow. IMO the best drives should be the roads where a driver is excited to do the same stretch again and again.

Ohh Boi !! Thats definitely a Belter.

I did that stretch in Oct and smashed 254 kms in 2hrs flat from Satara --> Hubli.

But, i'm told that during the sugarcane season its risky to do high speeds on this route as there are lots of bullock carts going left right and center.

Arrow Best Drives - From My Experience

Best drives IMO, in that order:
1.Gaurikund - Ukimath - Chamoli - Joshimath = 175 kms
2.Karnaprayag - Tarali - Kasauni = 110 kms
3.Srinagar - Rudraprayag - Gaurikund = 112 kms
4.Kothamangalam - Adimali - Munnar = 65 (?)
5.Ooty - Masanagudi - Mysore = 127 kms
6.Jabalpur - Salimnabad - Gharvara Forest - Bandhavgarh - 205 (Already given in one of the posts)
7.Bandhavgarh - Barahi - Unchehera - Satna - Khajuraho = 270
8.Barmer - Jaisalmer (when it rains) = 163
9.Dwarika - Porbandar - Somnath = 260 kms
10.Nemmarah - Nelliampathy = 75

I have kept the awesome scenic beauty, pleasure in driving and the pure enjoyment of the drive as crieteria for ranking, these sections I remember clearly. I haven't done Munnar in 15 years, yet every bend and waterfall in the rainy season is etched into my brain.

One more, don't know if it's open now.
-- Munnar to Kodaikanal - 80 kms (?) we did that on a yezdi 25 year back, a drive die for, we almost did!!! This is beyond all ranking, IMO, 5 star.

I too have done Jaisalmer Barmer as well as Bikaner - Jaisalmer. Awesome and exciting journey. If road quality is not too much of a bother, then I would like to nominate the Orchha - khajuraho - Panna stretch, Seoni - Nagpur through Pench, Betul - Bhopal through the Vindhya's

Default Short and sweet drives

I'd like to add three lesser known, shorter distance but sublime drives :

1. Charoti Naka -Dahanu - Bordi - approx. 40 kms ( off NH8 north of Bombay)

2. Lonavla - Amby Valley - approx. 27 kms ( off Pune Expressway)

3. Bazpur- Kaladhungi -Haldwani - approx. 60 kms ( alternate route to Nainital from Moradabad)

These are all two laned no shoulder roads.

I also picked up the issue of Jet wings (with due permission from the hostess) when returning from mumbai last week.

the reason i picked up the issue was to read this article in it

i have done only Mumbai-Goa stretchout of the ten till now.
hope to do the remaining before i retire.

Deky,

Have you posted your travelogue somewhere?
If so please provide the thread. I am interested in the Bombay-Udaipur stretch as I will be doing it.

I agree with your point regarding the best drives should be the ones where the driver is excited to do the stretch again and again.

But I seriously think that this stretch is awesome. Anyways Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder and I thought this was definately a stretch I would want to do again, so we really cant argue over this.

You may find this link useful. Info. on trip I did from Ahmedabad to Udaipur, Ranakpur last year. In post No.1 you'd also find the logs attached, hope that would help.

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...anakpur-3.html (Weekend Trip To Udaipur & Ranakpur)

The best time to do is after June when it rains or before January end, you'd find lots of greens, the weather cool.
