Default Khajjiar, "the last choice"

Mid december I was hunting for places to go for christmas/new years. Lack of leave put an end to my Kinnaur or Manali plan, so with just 4 days in my hand, the destination which came to the mind was Khajjiar.
Now why Khajjiar?
The answer was simple. Never been there, and booking was available.

Moreover it was just 6 hours or so from Ldh.

After a long boring drive in the plains with service light giving us company we crossed Pathankot after noon, and then it was excellent BRO road all the way to Dalhousie, and then a sharp ascent and an equally sharp descent put us squarely in the meadow.

First though was "nice place", one big ground with trees all around...

As luck would have it, we were out of luck.
Our rooms water geyser had conked out, and no other rooms were available, except for the frightfully expensive Deodar(HPTDC). At 870rs/night it would throw budget out of the window.
So we decided to brave the first night here itself, and then take another room for the subsequent 2 nights.
All this room tamasha did not leave much time for photography... So by the time I got my cam out, it was dark, and venus was shining bright

Infact, there were too many stars around.. countless of them

Took a slightly longer exposure of venus

Followed by an extremely long exposure of venus

Buy by now my hands were numb as temp was around 5 degree C, so it was time to get into the cold cold room, with a tiny heater for warmth, and go to sleep. tomorrow we will wake up early, around 9am.

We stayed in Khajjiar on the 30th for one night. We stayed in Khajji cottage and can vouch that it is not the best time to be there in winter. Infact we slept with our jackets on. The meadow was brown and the pool water was receding and black. But it is a good spot for daytime picnics and leisurely walks.

@ASHISHPALLOD, Khajjiar is an open meadow around 22 km from Dalhousie.

Yup, Khajjar is in Himachal Pradesh only. It is also known as India ka Switzerland.

With freezing cold outside chances are you get up even before 9 AM and start scouting for hot bed teas

Khajjiar is one of the places i need to do ASAP, Isnt it lovely to see a dark night sky with so many stars, not possible to see them so clearly in any city. Hoping to see some more pics from your trip soon.
BTW the first pic here, is it taken with a normal auto night mode in the camera and the rest with manual settings for longer exposure?? Do you have a professional camera or is it possible to get such results with a normal digital camera too??sorry I am bit dumb with the cameras.

bit O/T here but i dont know why I always tend to get up very early on holidays in the hills, maybe its the clean and fresh air which gives me a very sound and relaxing sleep to be fresh in the mornings??

The first pic without trails was a 30 sec exposure at ISO 1600. I used aperture priority for the same.
The longer exposures were manual

We slept soundly, for 9 hours, after that it was reluctance to get out of bed. Even the tea guys in Khajjar do not turn up before 9:30am in winters

Default Good morning... and good news

We woke up, and got a hot bucket of water provided by the caretaker.
Also got confirmation that we will get a different room for remaining 2 nights, starting evening.
So we got ready, and it was noon by the time we ventured into the meadow.

Paragliding 2 feet off the ground for 300rs was no fun, and jumping off the cliff was 2500rs, so we decided to bring our brunch into our mouth by doing zorbing.

the next few hours were spent aimlessly driving around. After all what do you do in such a boring place. Buy inspite of the place being very boring, every bit of it was enjoyable.
Finally we had a lunch of buiscuits and tea, and headed down to Ravi.

Snow clad mountains, so far away. So cold but no snow within miles. Trust me, we drove up every mountain road in hope for "snow"

Now it was time to drive back, and feed hungry bellies. Maggi and eggs rarely last a full day.

How can you forget those monkey acts to enter the ball... I remember how a fat lady was struck in the entrance hole in solang down in 2006 holidays, It was actually a disaster, we were laughing hell out of us for another 30 mins

Nice pictures Tanveer. Hotels were an issue all over HP during that time period, i reckon.

We landed in Shimla at 6pm in evening with no reservations and in that cold had to spend 3 hours to find a decent hotel room and i paid through the nose for a ridiculously average room ( Rs.1500/Night).

Some hotels were quoting Rs.3500/4000 + Taxes. Take it or leave it, was there attitude.

Learnt a lesson, never assume recession is effecting all and rooms would be empty, it's only the IT folks who are effected.
Hence, book in advance

Default Dinner time

We came back to Khajjar, and decided not to eat at Deodar. Time to try out a new place. Decided to check out a place called shiningstarresorts.
Reached there, and found restaurant empty, however rooms had decent occupancy, and we could see lot of food going towards the rooms.
To play safe we ordered the soup, and based on soup we will decide whether to eat here or not.
The soup took a long time coming, so I decided to click some pics
The view from the balcony was great

finally the soup came, and it was delicious, so we decided to devour 1kg Rahra chicken, while the camera took a long exposure

With belly full it was time to head back the the rest house. It was very very cold, and so time for just one shot, and time for a long 10 hour sleep

Rightly said - it's best if you book through HPTDC site in advance - and choose the room which has the lowest per nite rate/ even their lowest priced room is better than a moderately priced room in the other hotels....

I don't think so, Deky! I think it's the mind. Mine is 'same-same'!!
Some minds are wired that way, not wanting to waste time sleeping!

Good pics and travelogue, Tanveer.

@Mobike: HP or Shimla or whatever place, it always better if you book and land into that hotel. It will avoid the above kind of adventures.
