Default The drive to Shirdi...

We drove from Pune to Shirdi via Sangamner, despite learned advice to take the via Ahmadnagar route - just because my GPS started working and pointed me in that direction! It was a comfortable and scenic 4-hour drive (we left at 11am and reached at 3pm), through low ghats and soothing landscapes.

Our hotel was the one pictured below - at Rs.1980 for an AC room we thought it was rather expensive. Early the next morning, when we were packing to leave, there was a huge power surge which burnt out half the lights in the room and toilet. Really glad I didn't have any of my own electrical/electronic equipment plugged in at that time.

@SS, very good travelogue. I see that you too drive a Viva CRDi.

Interested to know how it performed during this trip and what type of FE figures you got etc?

Thanks for the appreciation, Maverick. Chopper in Baner, indeed it was!
I also saw a Morris Minor Traveller Station Wagon with Gujarat plates on it, in Pune, somewhere in Aundh. It was in excellent nick, nice and glossy, and seemed to be a daily drive. No pics.

Thanks mobike. My Viva CRDi has completed 97k km, and the FE with AC on full time (even when climbing Mt. Abu), varied from a worst of 11.8km/l to a best of 15.9 km/l. This included continuous runs at 120-130 km/h, not switching off at tea stops, and being generous with downshifts when overtaking (remember, I had a lot of ground to cover on the 1st day - 1600 km in 24 hrs). Zero oil consumption. Not exactly calculated yet, but ballpark FE figures for the total trip are about 14.9-15 km/l.

At 1 pm on the NE-1 (outside temp. 44*C, AC full on), at speeds exceeding 135-140 km/h (over 3200 rpm), the temperature did start to nudge up a little. Keeping the revs between 2500-2700 (110-120 km/h), the temp came back to normal in a few minutes. Didn't exceed 3000 rpm continuously on 5th (sure, I did it while overtaking, for a few seconds) for the rest of the trip, no more overheating issues. I guess the car needs a radiator flush and new coolant.

If the 1600km drive to Pune was boring, the drive from Shirdi to the NH-8 through the hills of Saputara was refreshing, as the flat landscape turned to hilly.

Onion-laden trucks and Tata Aces were everywhere

and there were fields of strawberries as we went deeper into the hills

Just awesome! I too plan to do Bangalore-Delhi by road some day on my Swift D, most probably whenever I shift my base back to north! The last journey from Bangalore will be by road.

You could well be right, abhijit. Since the strawberries were being sold near these fields, and I am terrible about plant identification, I kind of assumed that this was what strawberry plants look like.

A quick spot of research with Google Images...

Once out of the hilly sections, it was time for a bite. We were in Gujarat, and we love the kind of snacks on display below. The stomach rules! This time, of course, we ordered "bay" cutting "chai"...

We loved the sight of the shiny pots balanced on these women's heads, and the baskets-on-legs.

Thanks, Hitanshu. Food and driving are so closely associated with each other, isn't it? My automotive gastronomy is endless!

Thank you, pjay! Even I was not aware earlier, how beautiful a place Saputara is. But it's not really a summer destination - it was quite hot in end-May. Otherwise we may have stopped over for a night there too. Would love to go back there sometime in the monsoons or winter.
