Suman,
You were thinking of replacing the tyres before this trip. Which ones did you eventually go for? And how did they perform on this trip.

But I am yet to hear of anybody suffering from AMS in Patnitop, if that's what you're warning about.

In summers, Patnitop is quite a disappointment, know this from half-a-dozen trips made from Jammu every summer holidays. No doubt the hills and forested slopes are nice, but the real fun begins after Patnitop on that route.

I replaced the tyres in March - Yokohama Geolandar AT/S (stock size). Amazing tyres which swallowed anything that was thrown at them without blinking. Gave me a lot of confidence throughout this trip......and we did go through some pathetic road surfaces, actually no-road surfaces in some parts.

Well, you could always do a day trip to Sonamarg & another one to Gulmarg. But just five days, of which almost three days you'll be driving. Can't you stretch by another two days?

Also, the volatility in the valley is what sometimes comes in the way of making Srinagar a base & venturing out - it takes but a drop of a hat for a hartal to be called & that can throw your plans in complete disarray!

Sorry to hear that! Hope things sort themselves out - in any case, if not September, you can always do it next year in May. So don't give up just yet

I sure do have your phone number - Delhi surely should be a stop this time.

Definitely not, I still hoping things turn around in a month or so and then its all go. Going at end Sept, other than all snowed out geography, I am looking at doing part of the tour with JSL's 4wd Safari. So there's enough incentive for making this tour in end sept-oct. Lets see how things pan out.

How does this work?
You do a wee bit of transcendental meditation and your Safari metamorphoses into JSL's Safari????

Wonderful Travelogue !!!

I have been really busy these last few weeks ( Blessed with a Baby Boy )

So was out of action. Just logged in and saw your Leh Travelogue and thought I'd start it. Went till Page 11 ( till Shanti Stupa ). Will continue with the rest beofre bed time.

Absolutely wonderfully written Sumanji. And hats off to you for completing this lifetime trip.

I am planning to do it next year. With my wife and maybe another couple friend.

Lets see.

It is a huge responsibilty on the driver doing such a mammoth journey and I would rally praise you for this.

Excellent pics - Your better half did a wonderful job !! Applause

Congrats!
Are you sure you want to do it with one year old baby on board?

Suman, thanks a ton for sharing this wonderful trip with us. Loved every bit of it. It has always been my dream to drive down to Leh, yet somehow things are not materializing at the moment.

The pics from your thread, Tanveer's and Rudro's have left me so motivated that I have decided to do this trip within the next two years at any cost. Xenon is ready, now to find some company for the drive.

Don't be surprised if I come knocking on your door to buy "you know what" in person .

Btw, what lens did you shoot the pics with?

Thanks Rahul, long time no hear! Its great news that you're planning a Leh trip as well - that Xenon will be THE vehicle for this route methinks! Look forward to seeing you when you pass through .

Bulk of the pics were shot with the 18-55IS, there are a handful taken with the 55-250IS and even lesser number taken with the 50 mm 1.8.

Anupji,

Patnitop is 2024m, Leh is ~3200m, Manali is 2000m. Possibly you were refering to Manali and not Leh in your comparison!

@Suman - see your point about the 18-55 vs the usage of the 55-250! Will see and let you know!
