Default Bangalore-Jog-Kollur-Udipi-Sringeri-Horanadu-Bangalore

Hi Friends,

Did the above route over last week end and passed through some of the beautiful locations. It all started when parents wanted to visit Horanadu and the mode choosen was bus. I never had plans to travel with them and then my mom indirectly proposed that entire family including wife and kids should travel. The talks started on Wednesday and Dad on Thursday morning proposed that since it is a long weekend and if each one of us take a days leave, total of 4 days will be there to probably extend this trip to more unseen locations.

Some one suggested that Jog was beautiful this time and since none of the family members saw it before, Jog was the first place to visit and sagar became the first night halt. Dad again suggested that since we are anyway going that far, we can cover Kollur also. This became the second place to visit. I tried getting some information on the route from Kollur to Horanadu but could not get a proper safer route and also thought not to drive in the ghats in the night time. So Udipi popped up as a safe place to stay for the night and became the second night halt. From Udipi I planned to take Agumbe, Sringeri, Kuduremukh and Kalasa route to Horanadu as this was most scenic. Third day Night stay was planned at Horanadu.

Dad with his contacts had arranged for accommodation at Sagar and Udipi. The plan was put in front of my wife and it was difficult to convince her. I have 2 wonderful daughters. Elder aged at 4 years and the younger just 8 months. She was quite apprehensive initially because of the long journey in the car and finally after long talk agreed to accompany us.

Vehicle : I own a 2005 Maruti Alto which has crossed 55000+ this month and has never given me any problem. The retro fitted A/C at Pratham Motors, Bangalore who have done a wonderful job and changed my clutch plates post the installation(This is the major cost I ever incurred on my buddy) as the car was not pulling enough in the bumper to bumper traffic with A/C on.

Took an off on Friday by convincing my boss that I would detail him about the route since he was planning his trip the same week but for some reason got postponed.

Day 1 - 18/09/09
Bangalore to Sagar to Jog Via Tiptur, Arsikere, Shimoga

Started from Bangalore at 7:30 am and reached Tumkur by 9:10 am( I stay at Gottigere, Bannerghatta Road hence 1 long NICE Road for me to reach Tumkur Road)

My parents stay at Tumkur hence it was home made breakfast instead of Tatte Idly at Pavitra. Left Tumkur by 10:30am and reached Shimoga by 1:15 pm. Picked Lunch at Shimoga and had by road side next to the fields out side the town and reached Sagar by 3 pm.

You are lucky to get a good view during this season without any rains or the region fogged out. Little water is better as you can see the falls well instead of just one (or 2 or 3) huuuge mass of water falling mindlessly

BTW its Roarer (not roller) because of the noise it makes.

And only Jog? What about the rest? Kalasa etc should be amazing too.

Day 2 19/9/9
Sagar-Varadahalli-Holebagilu-Hasirmakki-Kollur-Udipi

Started by 8:30 am from the hotel after checking out towards Varadahalli (Sridhara ashrama. The ashrama is taking care of more than 250 cows). Name: P9190120.JPG

Size: 107.7 KBAfter spending some time here we started for Holebagilu on Sigandur route.

After travelling for some time, the road splits into two, right towards Sigandur and straight towards Kollur.

We were informed in Sagar at the Hotel that towards the route to Kollur, we have to cross a water body on a barge along with the car. We were all very excited since it was first for us, specially for my daughter.

Coming back to the route, we took the route to Kollur near the deviation. The roads are not that good hence cannot drive fast, also its a single road.

Timing of the barge from Holebagilu. This always coincides with the Bus, so anyone traveling on this route has to wait till the bus comes.

The charge was 30/- for the car, 100/- for the bus and 1/- for every individual. Infants no charge at all.

The road on the other side was very good and we reached Kollur by 2pm. We were very lucky to be let in and had wonderful darshan of Mookambika. Had lunch at the temple itself and then left for Udipi and reached by 530. Credit goes to the road between Kundapur and Udipi. The road is no where navigable and the path holes are really big. It was starting of the navaratri, hence the Krishna idol was decorated in Mohini attire and the temple inside was decorated beautifully.

Day 3 20/9/9
Udipi-Agumbe-Sringeri-Kuduremukh-Kalasa-Horanadu

Started leasurely from Udipi at 8:30. Filled petrol opposite Gitanjali theatre and started for towards Horanadu. There were 2 routes suggested:

Udipi - Karkala - Kalasa -Horanadu and Udipi - Agumbe - Sringeri - Kuduremukh - Kalasa - Horanadu. Though dad was insisting on taking the 1st one, I preferred and took the second route since it was most scenic and none of us apart from wife have seen Agumbe.

Enroute Agumbe we have spent some time by Sitanadi. Had some good coffee by a hotel who were kind enough to let my wife and mom cook some food for the little one. Here are the snaps:

We have spent some decent time at the Sunset point and proceeded to Sringeri. The drive to Srigeri was a memorable one as the weather was fantastic and lots of greenery around.

Reached Sringeri at 1 pm, finished Darshan, had wonderful lunch at the temple and started to Horanadu by 3 pm. Checked with the Forest checkpost on the status of the road to Kalasa via Kuduremukh and they have informed that the road is made now and even buses and plying. This was the moment of happiness since my wish was to travel in this route and god was making it happen. The moment we crossed Hanuman Gundi, it started raining heavily. This left me with the option to click the snaps from the car itself, but the drive was fantastic. Reached on the top and clicked some photos of the beautiful terrain.

The rain was so bad that I had to stop by the hotel before the check post after Kuduremukh for close to 30 minutes and then proceed. We had fresh and strong filter coffee at the coffee shop and then proceeded to Kalasa. The owner of the shop informed us that, they offer home stay with proper facilities. Incase any one travelling this route and want to stay at kuduremukh, I suggest you to get in touch with them. The hotel is very next to the check post where we have to stop to register the vehicle.

Finally reached Hornadu by 6 and into the room for the night stay.

Hi Umeshkj,

From Horanadu, I always take Balehonnur-Aldur-Chikmaglur-Hassan-Bangalore route since the roads are better and scenic. Filter coffee at the Badra Coffee shop located just after the bridge over the Bhadra river is one which I will never miss, but this time due the rains the shop was not open even till 9 am also. This route is longer than the mudigere-belur road which is not in good shape.

Good Travelouge Indian_Ranger. Good time to be in these places.
I have done a lot of trips to Shimoga / Varadahalli / jog. I reach shimoga via chickmaglur - lingadahalli-Tarikere. This route is good and another advantage is that of very low traffic.

Excellent locations. Western ghats mesmerize everyone. No doubts. I visited these places (not the same itinerary) few years ago in buses halting at least one day at each place. But doing this in own car is a diff experience altogether.

Nice travelogue. Please provide more information about rest of the trip.

Thanks,
Raghu Lakshman

Hi Rao,

Could not visit Kalaseshwara temple since I was in hurry to reach Horanadu and do the darshan. Thought would do it next day, but since I had to take balehonnur route(deviation before kalasa), had to avoid going to Kalasa. The another reason was that I had to drop my parents at Tumkur and then reach back to Bangalore same day. So I missed. Shall try and cover the temple in my next visit.

The day3 ended with superb darshan of Annapurneshwari and tasteful food offered at the temple. The souls were totally tired and happy to have accomplished the journey of covering these temples.

Cultural programs were arranged by the temple authorities on the occasion of Navaratri in the temple premises. We spent some time and retired for the day.

Day 4 21/09/09
Horanadu-Balehonnur-Chikmagalur-Hassan-Kunigal-Tumkur-Bangalore

Left Hornadu by 8 am and reached balehonnur by 9. Wanted to have Coffee at the Bhadra coffee shop, but was closed. Continued the journey, reached chikmaglur by 11:15, rested and Cafe Coffee Day and reached Tumkur by 2 pm after a non stop drive. I had to take detour since I had to drop my parents at Tumkur.

Attaching the Photos taken at Horanadu in the early morning. I just love this place and long to go back again.
