Before we embark on the climb to Shivneri Fort, take a look at this -

a. This is enroute to Shivneri (guess from which side) & looks spectacular in the monsoon - still searching for that picture.

b. This is how the surrounding area looks - after the harvest is done.

c. And view from the top -

d. No, this isn't yours truly - what I was trying to capture was that apart from the top of the mountain where we had reached, there were many more ringing the area.

Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5002.jpg

Now, the clincher - the water which we see in the picture is itself on top a smaller mountain - and we had visited some two or so months after the end of monsoon. Looks like a giant lake a la Mansarovar!

To take a break from the routine and also to see how Malshej looks in summer, planned a sudden trip.

Left Mumbai by Saturday evening (by car) VT-Chembur-Airoli-Shilphata-Kalyan-Shahad-Malshej.

Reached the hotel after 9 PM - not before wondering whether we had overshot the hotel. It was pitch dark and there were no signboards.

The road was excellent and there was no traffic - best night driving experience I ever had. Excellent place to stay - the earlier pictures were shot from there.

Made an early start next morning.

Crossed the ghat - it was pretty dry (pictures towards the end) and proceeded towards Junnar via Ganeshkhind Ghat. The road was bad condition, and was after 10 when we reached the base of the fort.

Good thing that you can drive till the start of the climb up :-) (parking will be bit of a hassle as per the crowd / visitors).

Wait till the sun climbs up - the city slickers will get to know what is the difference between rushing to catch a local and circumnavigating a fort!!

Each of the fort that I have visited is different from the other.

I expected Shivneri to be better maintained, as it is the birth place of the great warrior king, but alas time and nature have taken their toll.

Still, it was imposing and solid. In its original glory, it must have been quite a sight!

Could this fort have housed elephants? Because some of the portions seem to indicate so.

Just imagine - warriors, horses, elephants etc marching up the hill and preparing for war!

Thanks, mm!

But I neither a 'sir' nor a 'historian'. In fact, I am not sure if I deserve my surname...

Going back to the fort, at the entry one will come across this -

Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5015.jpg

Now 'Ambarkhana' is generally associated with the Panhala Fort in Kolhapur (which I am yet to visit). But this appears to be a good specimen.

This is how it looks inside and the mode of constructions indicates that the platforms inside could have been indeed used for stacking grains in gunny bags(?) -
Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5017.jpg

Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5018.jpg

Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5019.jpg

The construction nicely shows the 'keystone' which plays an intrinsic part in the construction of arches (every stone bridge is a wonder example - the Holkar Bridge and Harris bridge are excellent specimen. I am told that the train sequence in Robot was shot on Harris bridge. Is it true?)

Now the point of interest : 'Amber' is also supposed to refer to elephants, and 'Amberkhane' is supposed to be seat which is carried on the back of an elephant, which is how the royals used to travel. Can anyone throw some light on this?

As proceed within the fort, there are various structures scattered here and there. Some appeared to be huge water storage tanks - and cleaning was going on in one of them.

In one particular tank, we could actually get down, walk on the adjoining wall and reach inner part where there appeared to be idols. The water discouraged me to take my camera when I stepped in - hence no snaps.

Going further, we come across this -
Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5025.jpg

Shouldn't it have been befitting the warrior king - looks like whoever designed this was lacking in vision. One can understand that it was to convey the childhood days of the king, but.....

Across, there was this arch (the building in the background houses the sculpture posted above); there were a huge group of people, and a kind of discourse going on about the history of the fort and Shivaji Maharaj. Unfortunately, itinerary didn't permit us to spend too much time.
Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5028.jpg

This arch is visible from Junnar and signals the might of the fort, I guess.

This is where we were headed -

A lone tree on top of the hill -
Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5031.jpg

and, a lone warrior, beaten by the heat, perhaps?
Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5027.jpg

My earlier trips were during the monsoon. No wonder they required so much storage for water and grains - conditions must have been harsh in the summer months....

It took nearly two hours to reach this -
Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5037.jpg

Of course, we were walking leisurely and stopping every now and then for pictures. It was hot; all the water which we thought will last till our return was finished in no time!

The structure is unique, in the sense that it looks neither like a part of a fort nor a regular dwelling.... whoever built it must have had the foresight that it will be of significance, as the imposing structure stands as a symbol of our historic past....

This is the doorway -
Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5038.jpg

The wooden door goes to the room - where the cradle (the picture which I had posted earlier) is hung - is said to be birth place ...

One has to climb this stone staircase to reach the upper floor -
Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5049.jpg

The entire structure has been built with rocks which must have been cut and carved out of the hill (and the resultant pits must have been converted into water reservoirs?).

An excellent architecture - the arches and circular stone ceiling gives a solid feel and must have good insulation against heat and cold. It was a relief to sit inside - and thankfully, there were very few people around when we climbed up, allowing us to enjoy it in peace.

Outside, there is this dilapidated building - there is no sign indicate what it was.
Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5030.jpg

This is the view of how both the buildings look on the way up...
Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5056.jpg

And, this arch probably signifies the fort for those far... there were no steps leading to it from the bottom,
Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5053.jpg

This is the building (where the statue of infant Shivaji and his mother) are housed...
Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5055.jpg

This is what I meant - of my guess that the stones could have been carved out of the hill - to build the dwelling...
Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5052.jpg

As one can see, it is bone dry in the month of October itself!

The colours were more beautiful than it looks in the picture. Winter was yet to set in. It was quite a contrasting landscape, with red and pink flowers blooming in the dry surroundings....

A DSLR and panorama shot could have captured this better - all three monuments in a single frame, showing the sheer drop on one side....
Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!-img_5020.jpg

Time to depart. We head back to Junnar and have lunch. There was nothing unusual, except for the huge size of the jowari bakri - we were too famished, and finished it off, before we realised that we should have captured it on camera first!

Pondered for a while which route to take for the return trip...

Post lunch, nobody is in a mood to do much walking. Just hearing me describing the steps to climb and reach Lenayadri caves was tiring the others { btw, I was oldest among the lot }.

I didn't want to spend the afternoon in the Malshej Ghat, as what it is in the rains and what it is now, is a study in contrast.

To take a look at the monsoon magic, go back to this : http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...ml#post2038471 (Magnificent Maharashtra - The Mahalog!)

Take a small detour and visit Ozar Ganpati, and head back to Mumbai.

A few random snaps of the Malshej Ghat - there is some sort of beautification going on.... can't decide whether it is good or bad!?

The last four or five snaps are that of the water body / lake / backwaters which we saw from the top of the mountain....

Greenery was fading, but the pictures were keeping them live!

Any guesses??

Clue - Picture 3 is a different place from Picture 1 and 2.

Decided to do a day trip from Mumbai to the Sula Vineyards on 16th November 2014, we also wanted to catch a very scenic water body near the Vaitarna Dam along the way.

We made the mistake of heading straight to Vaitarna Dam instead of Igatpuri. The water body we were looking for can be accessed from Igatpuri only, however we managed to make the best of a not so ideal situation by finding some water spend some time near at Telsa Village.

Total distance covered ~ 400 Kms
Time including stops 14 hours

Road condition is excellent so long as you're not entering interior roads, as spends will drop tremendously on interior roads.

Will let the pics do the rest of the talking.

Where have all the 'Magnificent Maharashtrians' gone?

This thread kept me busy in office for almost a week and generated an urge for more. But I see very little posted on this thread in recent past. I'm sure Maharashtra has much more to offer & to explore, and also sure that all our explorers MX6, AP, vrprabhu and many more have not stopped exploring so expect to see much more on this thread in coming days.

Are you listening MX6, AP, vrprabhu ?
