Beautifull Travelogue, love the pics so far but I believe that the best pics are yet to come. Right?

I have done Delhi- Jammu by road a few times and it is always fun to drive. But I must appreciate your spirits as you drove thru dense fog, can be risky but I am glad you made it.

You are right about Jaipur-Delhi (NH8), its in pits these days, the conditions are horrible.

Waiting for the rest of the log to be posted.

Thanks & Regards

Default Gulmarg

Good Morning Tangmarg.

Escape to Gulmarg-image003.jpg

I rush out and take a smallish intro video. My hands and feets are freezing and the kids are running around. Good to keep them warm i guess.

So coming back to the point of interest. Savari.. eh will you start ?

I give crank after a few switch off and ons maybe thrice, if i remember correctly.

& then.. what the.. a puff of white smoke and the RPM climbs to 1200 and then settles down at 1000 after 3-4 mins. Thank God

Escape to Gulmarg-image001.jpg
Escape to Gulmarg-image002.jpg

But wait.. i accidently switch on wipers..darn what the heck ? What happened to my windshield.

Escape to Gulmarg-image007.jpg

Heater at full blast, restores the original condition some 10 mins later and then we start to the final destination.

Escape to Gulmarg-image051.jpg

Distant view of Gulmarg

Road to Gulmarg

Escape to Gulmarg-image053.jpg
Escape to Gulmarg-image054.jpg

Darn Its cold

Escape to Gulmarg-image055.jpg

By the time, we reach its almost 2PM and the gandola ride closes at around 3PM

A quick rush to base via sledge.. We have fun @cost.

And, the famous Gadola Ride . We take the only Phase 1.
"Life's first ever ride on the worlds highest cable car." We really enjoyed it

Escape to Gulmarg-image056.jpg

Escape to Gulmarg-image057.jpg

By the time we reach up, its no more sunny, & the temperature dips.
We go to the resturant to grab an expensive grub, after a while we come out.

WOW!!!!!!!

What a view, a few click. Picture dont do any justice..

As the sun had gone over, the temperature takes a sudden dip to -3 or something and the kids become really uncomfortable. We know now that its time to head back.

Escape to Gulmarg-image058.jpg

But not before these memories ..

Escape to Gulmarg-image063.jpg

Escape to Gulmarg-image065.jpg

Back at the parking, the temperature is still subzero, but electronics of TATA.. Less said the better

Escape to Gulmarg-image064.jpg

While coming back, i see something, i always wanted to..

RIDE IN THE SNOW.

Now since snow was little soft and not icy sleet, my able expert friend at Gulmarg tells me to reverse the car slowly onto this road all the way near to the yellow board and then come back in first gear and avoid any kind of circus maneouver's.

In excitment and anxiety, i forget to hand him the phone video cam :(

After I am back to the start point.I switch off the vehicle, put on the hand brake and first gear and get down.

"Listen, are we moving still with engine off,?" My wife shouts

Shucks, put a stone on the rear wheel quick, my friend shouts. That done, before reaching the point from where I shoot these pics, I slip twice

Escape to Gulmarg-image066.jpg

Escape to Gulmarg-image067.jpg

So much for the hard-ice, the vehicle peacefully shifted its place by half a feet. Damn.. that was close. Even a 4x4 would need snow chains here in these conditions.

Satified with my antics and some curious eyed tourists seeing us do it, we come back, loiter around Tangmarg bakery and have some fried boiled eggs from the market. Back at the hotel staff cooks us real nice kashmiri rajma and chawal.

We wonder what to do with tommorow and anyways day after tommorow we head back to Jammu. If we venture out to Srinagar, we anyways have to comeback here to check out tommorow.

Change of plans, we check out tommorow and head to Srinagar, check out Hotel Heemal and then roam in Srinagar for a day and then continue back to Jammu. Its anyway too cold for kids now.

A good rest taken, next day we check out of JKTDC Tangmarg.

Good Bye Gulmarg, I'll be back

So we saw Gulmarg, snow lots of snow and started back to Srinagar.

"How about a 2 hrs boat ride in Shikara and some shopping?," is the obvious question Wifey asks..
"Ofcourse, your highness" I murmur..

Coming up next, Dal Lake and a search for Rs.400 roast chicken.

PS:
a. I saw lots of hawks with a tail there.
b. Better carry your own set of woollens and good boots
c. Food is a concern and damn expensive.
d. Be physically fit

Default Gar Firduas ruhe zamin ast, hamin asto hamin asto hamin asto.

Today is 25th December.

Gar Firduas ruhe zamin ast, hamin asto hamin asto hamin asto.

Yesterday was Christmas Eve, and the party started around 9PM, which was too uncomfortable for us to attend.. Maybe next time, I quietly say to my self.

We are entering Srinagar now and we would stay at Hotel Heemal, JKTDC at Dal Lake.

"Hey, where do you think you are going ?," Its my friend in Srinagar calling.

"Going to the hotel!, why,"

"No, you are coming to falana falana place and at falana intersection, Ill meet you there"

"Ok,"

We proceed to the rendevouz and then to our friends place and have very nicely prepared Kehawa and few Kashmiri Delicacies for lunch.

While we are chatting about the trip so far,
"Listen, why not buy a KG of Saffron" my wife says.
"What.... I think I need a glass of water please" I say to her in a faint
voice.

Everyone has a hearty laugh.

"Madam !You know, how much a very good quality saffron costs ?" my friend interjects

" Rs. 27xx for 1 tola "

Now it was my turn to get her some water. LOLZ..

"Suno, Ill buy you some gold" I whisper into her ears grinning..That comforts here.

After tips on bargaining on Shikara Ride & learning that best of the dryfruits are available from Koker bazaar near LalChowk, We bid good bye and then proceed to our destination "Hotel Heemal"

Nearing Dal Gate

The hotel staff is very courteous and we book a room on the 4th Floor.

We have a clean view of the Dal Lake.

For those who dont know much details on it, here's help

Quote:
The Dal Lake, in Srinagar, the summer capital of the northernmost Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, is
considered as the symbol of Kashmir. It represents an enchanting and unique ecosystem. The lake, the
second largest in the state, is an urban lake that is integral to Kashmir tourism and recreation, though
it sustains commercial operations of fisheries and water plant harvesting.
The shore line of the lake, about 15.5 kilometres (9.6 mi), is encompassed by a boulevard lined with
Mughal era gardens, parks, houseboats and hotels. A leisurely and pleasurable way of looking at the shore
line gardens (the most famous of these gardens are the Mughal gardens of Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh
built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir) and houseboats, would be by cruising along the lake in
the colourful shikaras. During the winter season, the temperature sometimes reaches −11 C (12.2 F)
freezing the lake.

After we dump the luggage we rush out to the Boat Ride.

"Haan Bhai, Kitna loge" I ask the shikarawala
"650/- maalick" for 2hrs govt. rates
"200"

"Kya..nahi nahi, humara chote chote bacche hai, raham karo"

We look at each other. Its a queer silence for a moment or so..

In the meantime, my wife calls out some others Shikarawala's who are now running towards us.

"400 sahib final"
"300"
"Sahib, hum chalega. Sahib humare saath chalo, bast shikara..." other shikarawala's are now jostling for space to talk to us as there are
minimalistic tourists.

"O' Bhai, jaldi bolo" firmly i request
"Challo 350 theek"

"Allright, lets load" I say to my wife.
"Suno, woh chaar chinar ke pass se le jana otherwise, no money" i say to him quickly
Lamely, he just nods

"Are you sure, thats the best rate," asks my wife.

"Yeah, for 2 hrs the rate would be officially 500 in peak season, so in non peak......." i say to her.

We usher kids onboad and ask shikarawala to provide blanket..

Duh! its chilly cold

Kids and Wife are really happy and so am I. Common, after all its a ride in

Finally after 2 hrs approx, we come back satisfied as the sun goes down.
A good time spent very well.

"O Bhaiya, Koker bazaar.." I shout to the rickshawalas in front of Hotel.
"60/-"
"Kyo bhai kya dushmani hai?"
"Accha challo 35 de dena"

We usher into the rickshaw and are proceeding towards Lalchowk some 6-7 kms away.

B000000000000OM.................

"What the hell, damn" the rickshaw is also tilted dangerously towards right

My wife is stunned, slowly she asks " Am I alive, what happened.."

"Saahib" shouts the rickwala....

"Not to worry.. Not to worry.. piche wala tyre fut gaya, ill get you another rick.

In the meantime, my wife calculates quickly in her mind the state of things and is now back to normal.

Children are naive as usual..laughing and shouting all around.

Its late evening when we reach Lal Chowk. We click a few pics. My hands are shivering while I click so bad pics :(

Escape to Gulmarg-p1010064.jpg

After finding the shop, we buy lots of dryfruits amazed the prices they offer. Ofcourse by bargaining Sirjee and head back to hotel.

Night shot of Dal Lake.
Escape to Gulmarg-p1010070.jpg

In the meantime..
"Hello .. Hello.. Khane mein kya hai..?, I ask the resturant down below in the hotel from the room.
"Roti, Chawal, Rajma and dal"
"Kabab. Chicken bhi hai kya" I ask them
"Nahi..khatam ho gaya..8:30 ho raha hai, jaldi boliye kya chaiye?,"
" teen cup chai bhej do"

Shucks, Rogan Josh, Chicken, Kababs...where do we get em now.. Elder one is already clasping her hand and shouting chicken chicken where are you... :-/

I tell my wife to order 8-10 rotis only in sometime.
9.00pm Its ice cold outside now with temperature taking a dip to near subzero.

"I loiter around a few blocks away to see what and where to get"

Unable to bear the cold, I come back some 15 mins later, take out the safari with heater at medium, get out on boulevard in search of happiness.. errr Chicken.

Finally, I find a decent looking hotel and place the order for a roast chicken.

"Saahib ke liye gosht chicken pack karo" shouts the man behind the cash counter.
"Huh.. Oye.. roast chicken bola na ?" I say back to him, protesting.
"Haan Sir, wahi to "Gosht Chicken" I give up....

"Kitna"
"400/-"

"Whattttt.." my jaw drops, reminding me of the dry cheeks i have.
"Whatever," I hand him the money.

After cooling my heels outside for sometime, I head back to hotel to feed on the feast I bought.

"Gosht Chicken is here" I announce and we have it whole heartedly with roti and then call it a day.

Tommorow we go to Shankaracharya Mandir, Shalimar and Chasmeshahi Gardens
