Our ride, an open Jeep, was waiting for us. The excitement was apparent, as this was what we had really come for! Bajana village is around 25 kms from the camp, and that's where the permit is issued to enter the Sanctuary. It was a 40 minute drive to the entry of the Sanctuary, complete on well-paved road, since it is a State Highway going to Surendranagar.
As soon as you go off road in to the Rann, the landscape changes completely, in a matter of meters. It is barren, dry and devoid of human beings. You can see miles, till the horizon, and there is nothing but dry patch of land. A paradise for someone wanting to test his/her vehicle's top end!
Soon, we were deep in the Rann, looking for what we were here for - The Wild A-S-S, Nilgai, birds and more birds. And we were not dissappointed. We spotted a herd of the Wild A-S-S and another of Nilgai. Initially, they were camera shy, but soon they acknowledged our requests.
Little away from there was a lake with another couple of thousand Flamingos and various other chirpies. They made for a brilliant scene, and I went shutter happy. Also spotted was a pair of Eagles guarding their lunch, a female Nilgai. The black ones are Male, while the brown-ish are females.
Our driver-cum-guide took us to the place where they make salt. He walked into the salt pan to bring us some fresh salt - actually in rock form. It is amazing how even desert can produce stuff!
I, then, request him to let him drive through the Rann, and he happily gave me the keys! This drive HAS to be experienced to understand how fun it could be - no roads to follow, no vehicles to avoid, no rules either - just pedal to metal and ...vroooom! Excellent end to the Safari.
