Default "Smoking Rocks" - Hogenakkal

After many postpones and delays, a much awaited trip to Hogenakkal finally turns out to be a reality.
In a nutshell it was "late come, right come".

So here is the travelouge
Bangalore -> Dharmapuri -> Hogenakkal -> Bangalore

Reached Dharmapuri by train (took about 2 hrs 15 mins). After a quick breakfast at Dharmapuri we took a bus to Hogenakkal(1 hr 30 mins approx).

The bus was very typical - Crowded, music loud enough to burst your ear drums, sales men selling packet juice to beat the welcoming heat ..
It was fun.

Just as we arrived at Hogenakkal, we were received by the local coracle riders, each one marketting for business.
After bargaining for quite sometime the man finally agreed for Rs700 for 4 of us promising quality time in the coracle.

Here is the 1st pic i clicked as we bargained for the ride.
Looks more like a "Coracle parking area"

More parking space

The coracle takes you along the initial water streams.

"Smoking Rocks" - Hogenakkal-2.jpg

The coracle rider drops you on the edge of one of these trees to walk a short distance before you actually "Rock and Roll" in the coracle.

"Smoking Rocks" - Hogenakkal-22.jpg

Tempting views as we walked by.

Gateway to the falls.

All set to go.

"Smoking Rocks" - Hogenakkal-8.jpg

And this is what we've come to see..
I was Possessed.

"Smoking Rocks" - Hogenakkal-11.jpg

The boat man takes you very close to the falls.
Felt heaven when water showered on me from such a height on a "boiling day" thats good enough to deep fry your skin

Nothing to beat this in the entire coracle ride.

Another 1 nearby ..Very Enticing

The coracle then goes along the calm waters. Water dept here is ~150ft.
It is said that many water falls can be seen flowing along these rocks during rainy.

Rock formations are just phenominal thoughout.

It is said that a scene in the movie "Jaganmohini" was shot here.

Weather @ Hogenakkal - No comments

"Smoking Rocks" - Hogenakkal-13.jpg

Pit stop for swimming and lunch .
Its impossible to walk bare foot here.
The scorching heat of the sand is no less than burning charcoal

"Smoking Rocks" - Hogenakkal-15.jpg

Lunch menu : Rice, Rasam, Fish Curry & Fish Fry prepared by the local women.
As always we hogged and hogged.
I was surprised to hear women talking Tamil mixed with Kannada. But this is expected as Hogenakkal lies in the border of the 2 states.
Words sounded like "illi podu" meaning "put here", illi -> Kannada , Podu -> Tamil.

"Smoking Rocks" - Hogenakkal-14.jpg

Time to head back.
On our way back we found local boys on the rocks ready to take a plunge into the deep
@ just Rs5.

Boy!!! Perfect Jump

"Smoking Rocks" - Hogenakkal-16.jpg

The falls was so tempting that we could not resists going for it again.
Coracle rider did not have a problem taking us again either.

Hogenakkal is simply Flawless and defenetly a photoraphers destination.

That was "Smoking Rocks" in a nutshell.

Let me start! Nice clicks. Water fall and coracle ride is so tempting, Hope you had a nice time, but i believe they are now charging premium for coracle rides. I remember paying 50 bucks per head but that was long back or atleast 4 years back. Is it now a season or offseason, not finding much people around. It was very crowded when we visited and parking space was also a problem considering safety.

Good to see much water in this summer too

Coracle, yes its a day light robbery. Eventhough you have a board that clearly said Rs50 per head, they never bother to follow.

And no one to question too.

Anyway, you had a nice time there. Cool.. Oopps. Hot.

Nice photos there. these destinations are actually hidden treasures. They aren't as great as the mighty himalayas or as commercialised as ooty etc. But they add to a charm you don't get elsewhere. We should appreciate people like Maniratnam for bringing out such hidden gems. There was a song in Roja shot here. In another travelogue (munnar/ thekkady) someone has asked isn't this place where jiya jale was shot. Your photos are good.

When the water falls on the rocks it appears as if hoge (smoke in Kannada) is emanating from the top of the kal ( means rock )because of the force of the water, hence Hogenakkal (smoking rocks). It is also called as Marikottayam by the people of Tamil Nadu.

Nice one and good photos too.
I had been to this place on March 12th with family. I paid Rs 350 for 4 people for the coracle ride. I guess you could have bargained. Anyway the coracle ride is worth we spend on that.

Few of my office colleagues are planning to visit Hogenakkal this weekend and since you travelled by train please update me about your plan. I am not able to help them coz I want by my car and my colleagues are comfortable in trvaelling by bus/train where they want to have fun.

1.Which train you guys took and by which train you came back?
2.Any direct buses to Hogenakkal from Bangalore?

Please throw some light on this so that I can pass it on to them.

Have a Good Day!

[ Ernakulam Express- That starts from bangalore at ~6:20 AM. Get down at DHARAMPURI and board the bus to Hohenakkal. There are many buses.
Another train starts from DHARAMPURI around 4:45. So u need to leave hogenakkal around 3 to reach DHARAMPURI]

2.Any direct buses to Hogenakkal from Bangalore?
Not sure, but there are many buses from DHARAMPURI..

Sanju,

I would suggest you to hire a taxi and leave very early morning (5 AM) if possible.
Reason is : Its very hot after 10.30 AM at Hogenakkal right now.

So, If you start at 5 by taxi; you can reach the place by 9 AM.

You can stop for half an hour for breakfast near / at Dharmapuri or Krishnagiri (Remember after Dharmapuri; you don't have good place for breakfast).

So, from 9 AM to 11.30 AM ; you can complete your coracle ride and all. Then, if you want you can relax under a tree / good place / near any other fall and spend afternoon. Or there is a nice place to take a bath (You have to cross the bridge; which is after Hotel Tamilnadu & after Coracle Boat ride starting point). Once you cross this bridge, follow the ppl around. You find a place where the water falling from falls is getting collected (made it like a tank). Would be worth spending time bathing / taking oil massage etc).

For more details, plz check my travelogue.

Thumbs down

Have been to this place once, and I found it a waste of time

Didn't like it at all. Moreoever, the coracle guys just loot you. 700 bucks is not at all worth the ride. According to me, I would pay him 100 bucks, and that's what I did when I went there a year back. I don't know if it was off season, seeing the crowd I didn't feel so. It was really crowded.

The massage thingy was YUCK to see, wonder how people took it..!

Ranjan,

Im very sure you were there at the wrong time..take a look at the pics. If it doesnt attract you then God alone knows what will. I am sure the 100 bucks u paid was for one single person for sure. No where in the history of hogenakkal have the coracle riders taken an entire group in it for 100 bucks..your kidding my friends.

Well then you are not quite aware of the History of Hogenakkal. But, the pictures look really good.

However, this was just my thought. I didn't mean that it becomes a bad place if I say so. It's just that I did not like it.
