@unoczar : Lo lunch bhi barbad kiya aape ke liye ;-)

At around 2330hrs the results were put up. The last section stood cancelled. The order of finishers showed we were fourth overall. After Raheja, Prasad and Jangra - all in Gypsy's. A round of self congratulations followed. And a some discussion with the dejected "opposition" camp who did not want this as they had not considered initially point #3 when opposing.

The other input was that while every one else had to report for scrutiny next day at 1000hrs we were to be there by 0800hrs. The first five in both categories of competition were for special scrutiny.

Went to sleep past 0100hrs but were up at 0600 hrs. What luxury after previous two days. And got ready and asked for breakfast through room service. It was promised delivery after half hour (reminded of Domino?). After almost an hour no breakfast!! Called in again and a sheepish voice told "Saar breakfast to bheja tha par galat room mein deliver ho gaya. Dus minute mein phir bhejta hoon"

This time it did come in ten minutes giving us time to enjoy the same standing on small balcony breathing in early morning fresh air and soaking in sites of Dal Lake.

Breakfast over strolled to the scrutiny venue and waited for our turn.

First to get scrutiny call was none other than Randeep Miglani. And here quite a bit of hilarity ensued.....

This is the best action shot I was able to find. Both of us are busy "stickering" our car before the scrutiny.

Hi,

Thanks.
Do you have a tracklog with altitudes? And Day 1?

Do you need any special permission to use the road?
The old AMS maps show a different alignment. Does it still exist? Does anyone have waypoints for the original Sarais?

Regards
Sutripta

No track log for day 1. And no altitudes in track log of day 2.

AFAIK you do not need permission for using Sinthal pass road between Kishtwar and Duksum.

AMS?

The sarai's are on route we covered on day2. But do not have way points. As I explained there was no time for pictures even let alone make track notes.

May be some other day.

The organisers has provided a special place for scrutineers to conduct their business on one side of the Parc Ferme. Here is chief scrutineer and his deputies sitting:

While chairs were provided for us also to sit in shade we were sitting under apple trees lining the parking and chatting amongst ourselves and swapping stories.

Randeep and his new, to-be-a-doctor from AIIMS, navigator were describing how the navigator was holding bottle of mineral water in his hand to clear the windscreen as wiper on his side was not working. And had a swollen wrist to show for it.

One at a time a vehicle would be and it would be checked for all the points marked in scrutiny card. This is picture of pre-event scrutiny as the incident that had in splits changed the look of the scrutiny marquee a bit....

Randeep was called in for scrutiny. And very smartly he started his Gypsy with an almighty roar. Reason his exhaust had fallen off and was tied down in the back with bits of twine. A bit earlier he was explaining to us what all items he had "lost" on the track:
The front crash guard
Two Hella spot lights
One head lamp
Almost all the mud flaps and the one that was left had "designer" cut on it due to wear and tear

Any ways as he attempted to get in to position to reverse his car in to scrutiny bay (like the gypsy in previous picture) He was blinded combination of dirty windscreen and the sun. He ran over the stay rope holding up the tent. It was a sight to see all the scrutineers running out as the tent collapsed.

And then his Gypsy would not slot in to reverse as the clutch was almost gone. Here he is being pushed back while other try to resurrect the marquee tent.

Finally the Gypsy is in position for checking. See the tent hanging down on the right side.

In any case missing lights, non working brake lights, reversing lights, exhaust, head lamp, non working wipers and indicators were noted and per item fine levied. He came out of the scrutiny beaming as he had expected a lot worse.

A few more cars were checked and all were being levied fines due to missing or inoperative items. A while later just after Sunny Sidhu's scrutiny Randeep came and proudly announced "I AM FIRST!!" For a moment we thought some thing had gone wrong with Sunny's check and he was disqualified. But no Randeep was first not in the races but in being the highest fine payer!!

We were soon called. Surprise. All items checked and working Zero fine. AFAIK there were only two cars who did not pay any fine out of all cars checked. The other was Jangra of team Maruti (RPM). He works in the companies engineering department as they would call nd a TSD competitor of note.

Scrutiny over it was time for "ceremonial" flag in of the vehicles. We were lined up as per order of results and were flagged in by the Minister of Tourism. Followed by a bit of speech making and a service of Kashmiri delicacies and snacks with tea.

Next prize distribution.

Default Ruote waypoints

For those who may be interested attached GDB files give the way points on the route for Day1 and Day2. The TSD competitors were not issued tracks. But these are equally good as they cover all junctions and important points.

Just to recap the way point number and the road book instruction number were the same. If any one knows any of the extreme category participants you can get track from them.

LEG 2 WAYPOINTS ENDURO 4X4.gdb

Default How did I miss this thread?

Sudev and Alka

Congrats to both of you on completing the rally. The scenery is simply mind boggling

Not to mention, the humorous conversations between you were a pleasure to read.

Is this more of a tarmac or gravel event. How similar is it to the Raid de Himalaya? Would love to see some pics of cars in action.

Lastly, would love to hear about your rally exploits from yesteryears.

@Mpower : Watch the program on Saturday and Sunday to know more.

As the TSD rally goes I would say roughly 150 odd kms were non-tarmac. Rest all was tarmac. The down slope from Sinthan pass to Mughal Maidan near Kishtwar on day one was good kutcha track that would be tarred by next year hopefully. The up and down the Peer-Ki-Gali is under construction and in patches is very bad. And water crossings three four of them with heavy water flow and slippery rock bed.

See for your self:

very novice question, but this is my first exposure to a rally.

why the fine is levied for 'missing or inoperative items'?

anyway the participant will have to buy these items later - isn't it a double whammy!!!
