Nutty Nair, any idea how the other route to Athirapalli is, the road from Angamali, which crosses the river just before Athirapalli?

I am intending to do a BLR-Munnar-Guruvayur-BLR trip sometime during Aug/Sept (after rains). Will it be possible for me to cover the Athirapally waterfalls on my way from Munnar to Guruvayur? Will it be too much off the way ?

Will someone enlighten me pls ?

Rajesh, Athirapilly waterfalls is only 36 kms away from Chalakudy which is on NH47. Vazhachal falls is 42 kms. A small diversion, but you will be happy for that later. Drive up to Vazhachal will not consume much of time as the roads are really nice as you can see from Nutty Nair's pictures(One of the best roads in Kerala). I would even suggest an overnight stay at any of the resorts at Athirapilly to enjoy the scenic beauty.

I don't know how many times I have visited the place, but still wants to return whenever I am back home.

Kumar Sir, Soccerfan has already answered your query.
@Rajesh K R - as @jaguar.runs has already posted, don't miss it! It is only a slight detour, the roads are nice and both the waterfalls are sights to behold during/after monsoons. Already it must have swelled a bit, thanks to rains. Oh and another thing, make sure your camera batteries are fully charged & memory card has sufficient memory. You are sure to go bonkers with your camera.

Default Athirapally & Vazhachal Waterfalls

Athirapally & Vazhachal Waterfalls
After spending some time in the place, we proceeded to our first destination of the day, Athirapally. But some time down the road, we were distracted by this fellow on top of the coconut tree. A small shack was selling Gooseberry in salt water with red chillies in it.

Soon we got the first glimpse of Athirapally from the road.

Athirapally was not in full glory as it was summer time but still the falls did not disappoint us. We took photos from the top first & then went to the bottom of the falls through the trail there.

After spending some time taking photos & relaxing, we started our small trek to the top. At the top it was time to bid farewell (with a promise to return during the monsoons) to one of the most beautiful waterfalls in India and move towards our next destination, Vazhachal.

Smile Nice food-o-logue !

Nice photos and a nice food-o-logue !

Its high time for Keralites to call for a World Conferance on Puttu Kadala and announce it is the Official food of Keralites !

Being in Mumbai now, let me frankly tell that I used to travel all the way from Andheri to Churchgate - Fort (around 30 kms) in the packed trains only for eating Puttu Kadala in some of the good South Hotels , on my leave days.

I guess the BHP ians can add a little about the food of different places also in their travellogues like this.

Any way I will surely visit this Chayakada (Tea shop) on my trip.

Make it puttu, payar and pappad, with some ghee too.
As a second serving boiled banana with ghee on it along with puttu...

laluks, the gourmet! don't start anything, pleeease... (had to skip breakfast this morning and lunch time is atleast an hour away! On Saturday the food in canteen is lousier than usual - if it is possible...)

Ranjith, if I remember right, there are two routes to the waterfall - one from the top by which you climb down (which you have pictured) and other other from the bottom (via a garden of sorts). Do you have picture of the lower part? If possible can you post them? And what is the effect of the power generation station now on this place? No 'no off limits' or ' no photography' conditions?

@Majic - Actually I had almost uploaded the next post yesterday but due to the rains the power went off at the last minute. This happened after uploading the photos & the narration, I was like. Now has to do it again.
@Cheeronwheels - Maybe in this thing at least we Mallus may show some unity.
@laluks - you are already pushing it, man! Time for you to go on a diet!
@kannan666 - Thank you, Sir! IMHO During/after monsoons is the best time to visit Kerala.
@vrprabhu - AFAIK there is only one way to go to the bottom of Athirapally WF & that is the one we took. Don't know about other way to the bottom. Maybe you are speaking about Vazhachal where there is a Herbal Garden through which also you can reach the falls.
@all - Next post coming up shortly. Only hope power doesn't play spoil sport.
