Default Islamic Cairo I

I then proceeded back to Khan-el-Khalili area but from a different route; Street Al-Muizz li-Din Allah. At the intersection where it met the Street Al-Azhar is the Complex of Al-Ghouri. One side is his Mosque and another side is the Masoleum. Presently, regular sufi performances are held at his Masoleum.

One can see the Burjs of Bab Al-Zuweila from other side of the street and through the Complex.

Rest pics, later in the day...

Edit : @Aargee Yes they are pretty dry but of historical value. You see the real Cairo/Egyptian life in these lanes which is no different from the lanes in India. I keep meeting lots of touts, but once I speak Arabic they just buzz off. As it is they are more interested in the Europeans with dollars/euros and pounds.

Default Islamic Cairo II

This is part II. I covered these areas the day before and today. The Street Al-Muizz li-Din Allah leads from Al-Azhar street to Bab Al-Futuh. Its a nicely paved road stretch of 1.5 km. There are several historic monuments standing along the road. At places there are stone benches for people to rest.

The places in the sequence you encounter them as you travel from Street Al-Azhar side (Most of them to left side) are:-

- Ali Mutahhaji Mosque
- Madrasa and Mausoleum of as-Salih Ayyub (to right)
-
Madrasa and Mausoleum of Qalaun
-
Madrasa and Mausoleum of An-Nasir Mohammed
- Madrassa and Khanqah of Barquq
- Qasr Beshtak (to right)
- Sabil-Kuttab of Abdul Rehman Katkhuda (to right)
- Mosque Al-Aqmar (to right)
- Beit-el Suhaymi
- Darb al-Asfar
- Mosque of Suleiman Silahdar
- Bab al-Futuh
- Bab an-Nasr

Note: Some of them have entry tickets/need to pay baksheeh to enter.

The pictures will flow in this sequence..

Continuing with some more pics on the circuit. Note the wooden work on the roof. Shooting was challenging as the lanes were narrow and buildings were high.

The last set of pics would be the shops/daily life pics from the area. It would be interesting I am sure.

Default Souq Khan-el-Khalil

Some shots of the famous Khan-el-Khalili market. You need to bargain really hard to get the right price. Initial price is normally 2-3 times higher. The market is about 500-600 years old. It boasts of ancient artifacts, spice bazaar, copper smith's market, gold smith's market, cloth market etc.

Default October War Panorama

Went to the October War Panorama today. It was a short visit. But I really liked what I saw. I really dont know if we have anything like this in India. IMO we dont have.

The building is impressive. The panorama covers the 1973 War which is painted and modeled 360 degrees. There are some live equipments kept too. The commentary is available in many languages. Open 9-4. Running time of one show about 30 mins.

Just see the pics how the modelling merges into the canvas. Its difficult to make out where they meet.

Default Fellucca Once Again in Late Evening

Hi Guys. Went for a fellucca ride at sun set time. The weather was good and some clouds too. Caught glimpses of Cairo along Nile in the evening. On way back enjoyed the magnificent view of Qala'a As-Salah-ad-Din too. Some of the pics for the thread..

I somehow missed out the War Panorama. What's that panorama? I couldn't understand, can you explain for me pls?

Dsc_568 is pure wallpaper stuff; copyright it soon.

BTW, you once had a evening ride over the boat isn't it? Also you showed us the Indian Embassy right? How different is that ride from this one?

Panorama is a depiction of the October war in a round shape theatre. The depiction is both 2D and 3D whcih means that he objects close to you are real/models and as you look farther this real items/models are merged with a background/painting on the wall. There is light and sound when you see the show and you complete one full round i.e. the circular seating in the centre takes a full circle. You may be able to pint out the in the pics the real objects. But the line where real merges with paintings is difficult to discern at places. Eg in DSC0555 the tank is real. but background is painted.

The embassy pic was not from fellucca but from a bridge. This time we timed it right. Which means the sunset time was exactly in the middle of half an hour ride time. Last time we finished well before sun set. So this time a better photography opportunity. The location and price is same as before. I missed out to carry the stand for low light photography.

Thanks.
Unfortunately, yes. The Monument entrance fees are high and at places unreasonable too. But then they are not targetting the Indian tourists. Anyways, its much cheaper than Europe.
With lots of research you can plan a budget travel. Season of travel makes a big difference. For eg, You would be ripped off during Christmas.
Yes, Specially for visiting the ancient monuments (if thats your preference) you must avoid travelling in groups. I like to spend a lot of time, get a feel and explore in depth. So, I plan my trips myself.
