The Valparai-Athirapalli route continues to be bad, with many potholes in some sections. Allow for half an hour more time than normal.

Yup. The Road fro Valparai till Athirapally is horrible. Apart from a few sections of patchy road, it is full of potholes. We took close to 5 hours to do the 80 km trip. Best to do it morning if you want to do it.

So we returned back to Chalakudi and drove through Thrissur BP-Pallakad-Coimbatore. We reached Saravana Bhavan on the Coimbatore bypass by 10:15 PM even after we stopped in between for about 25 minutes for the tea and buying the banana chips.

Thanks Everyone. My plan was for last September but had to cancel for accomodating Bandipur trip. Now I may have to wait for couple of months till roads are motorable .

But sir, with your beast that road is nothing. Add some extra time to come off slowly, and do it during the day time. God knows when that road will get relaid, hence I think waiting further will make the situation sad.

Day05, 23.08.2010
Vaalparai

This day was Thiru Onam.

Woke up to a chilly morning. Kiddies still sleeping in their cozy beds. Got outside to see wifey already enjoying the morning breeze and slight drizzle. From this day on till the end of our trip it was raining through out. It was WET WET WET!!! Our Parambikulam hats were put to good use!

Before going for a stroll, got a beautiful cup of tea. Decided the menu for breakfast with the cook. Our tummies were craving for tasty food, even though we had a heavy dose last night. The cook was amazing with the food.

We walked towards the tea gardens and the Valley View cottage. The morning chill was nice.

Day05, 23.08.2010
Vaalparai

We decided to checkout Kadamparai dam before heading to Vaalparai town. It is a restricted TNEB area.

We drove through among some good green area and reached the dam. Further ahead was not allowed by the friendly gentleman. We politely obliged and returned.

Vaalparai

We drove on to Vaalparai town and hit the misty areas. Thankfully mist was less.

The misty route.

Day05, 23.08.2010
Vaalparai

We reached Vaalparai Town by 12:00PM and were in two minds. Should we go back to the Cottage and have lunch and come back (that'd be 22Km one way) or take another two more hours and get back by 14:00 for lunch. The second option sounded reasonable, so continued further towards Nirar Dam.

Enroute we stopped by a beautiful river.

Great pictures and description Laluks. So many places to be seen around these areas. Sometime when in Kerala - I must try to do this. You guys in Bangalore seem to have so many places to go to (the grass is always greener on the other side).

The roads between Vazhachal and Malakkapara is usually not so great. And it seems they do not repair it on priority because of the little traffic that it sees. There is a positive side to it. You drive slow and at least everyone else (except the driver perhaps) will enjoy the forests. And it is good for the animals too. I once almost knocked down a sambar that dashed across the road at a blind curve. What saved it was my low speed.

Grass is always greener on the otherside How I wish I could explore Maharashtra!

You are right, that road doesn't get a new surface often.

This is the best travelogue on Valparai here. Thanks Laluks, you have inspired me to do another Valparai trip. Your previous 'logue inspired me to do the Nelliyampathy trip

I'd visited TNEB Kadamparai once on an official trip. The maintenance officials sit in an office deep inside a tunnel. We had to travel more than a km into the tunnel to get to the office. It's an eerie feeling with the office being gouged out of the rocks - its like old hindi film sets where the dakus hide! Only thing missing will be the pink and blue lights!!

Spectacular photos, Lalu.
Looks straight out of some African Safari or Amazon trip!
Kadamparai - you turn off from the Valparai-Pollachi road?
