So looks like based what you and star went about Parambikulam itself is a 3-4 day effort.
Any basic sequence of places to be kept in mind while planning this one?

Parambikulam, if visited with family then 2 days package are the best. Starting from Day 1 afternoon, and ending at Day3 Afternoon. Basically a clear 3 days would be ideal. Nearby Topslip could be filled in for the Day1 first half, or Day 3 second half.

If with out kids, then a lot of trekking options opens up. Tramway trek being the most interesting.

We reached our Hotel by 10:30AM. Washed up, and had breakfast. My eyes popped out seeing two dosas priced at 150ish. Since the breakfast was complimentary, did not bother. A very normal hotel with some 15+ rooms and some car parking place charging like this. God save the tourists!! Even Club Mahindra charged less comparatively

By 12:00 we got out to the roads again. I was booked at Club Mahindra tusker Trails Thekkady from the afternoon. We decided to just roam around the place and checkin to Club mahindra by evening.

So took a drive through the beautiful streets of Murikkady - Odamedu - Vellaram Kunnu - Kattappana - Puliyan Mala- Thookkupalam - Ramakkalmedu.

Amazing route. Filled with lush greenery and all along cardamom plantations.

Am surprised that there were no crowds for the boats at Thekkady! Is it because it was the off-season or because it was the first morning boat, before the day-trippers arrive on the spot.

What is this Murikkady-Kattapana route?

Sir, there was around 100+ people at the counter when I reached by 06:30AM. The ticket issuing was efficient and we all were chanelised to the boats. But the camera ticket counter was a confusing one.

Since I took the pictures after being allowed to the lake, everybody has already boarded their boats and gives us the feeling of no crowd. But outside the gate to the lake it was maddening crowd. Remember this day was just after Thiru Onam and Kerala was indeed enjoying its holidays.

Rain was a dampener though.

In the Kumily to Vandiperiyaar route, just before you climb the first bridge, there is a small right going down. This route is the one to Murikkady. Thickly vegetated area. Lots of cardamom cultivation around here. Proper agricultural area and it was a pleasure to drive through there.

I wanted to see the place called Vellaram Kunnu just for the sake of it, since there was a mallu film by that name - "Vellaram Kunnu P.O." Then continued to Puliyanmala and Kattapana. At Kattapana instead of just returning drove to Ramakkalmedu. This are very narrow routes filled with greenery.

Calvary Mount

From Puliyanmala, drove a bit to the idukki route and ended up at Calvary Mount by 13:30PM. It was raining cats and dogs.

During Good Friday time, believers climb up this hill remembering Jesus's walk with the cross. There are 14 crosses here at about 100m apart, which makes the total climb about 1.5Kms. Its a steep climb to the mount.

Braving the rains I huffed and puffed up the hill.

The path was slippery and steep

Every few hundred meters I came across a cross signifying the moments of the walk with the cross

Visibility was poor, and rain and mist started to engulf the area.

I aborted the climb at the 10th cross, promising to come back. It was a tiring climb. From this hill on a clear day you can see Idukki and Cheruthoni dams.

By about 14:30PM I continued on to Puliyanmala, and from there drove on to Rammakalmedu.

Got some time today for a few more updates. I am really unsure at this pace when I'd complete the log. Thekkady, Gavi, Vagamon are all remaining.

Official and personal life demands a lot these days, and 2011 looks real hectic already.

Day06, 24.08.2010
Ramakkalmedu

Around 3.30PM we've reached Ramakkalmedu. We've taken a deviation from Thookupalam to reach here. We were welcomed by vast expanse of green meadows and real strong winds. Somewhere I have read that the winds here can reach to some tens of Km/h speeds. Somewhere nearby is Ottakathalamedu. All these areas had a lot of windmills as expected due to the strong winds.

Day06, 24.08.2010
Ramakkalmedu

Story goes that while searching for Sita, Lord Rama had stood on the tallest stone in this area to look around. Hence the stone got the name Rama Kallu, and the area Rama Kallu Medu aka Ramakkalmedu.

More info about the place can be read here
Ramakkalmedu | The wind hill station of Kerala to Experience the wind factor
Ramakkalmedu : 1st official site about ramakkalmedu. The Play Ground of Breez, Wind Farm, idukki tourism, Kuruvan and kuruthy statue, Ramakkalmedu History, Economy, Tourism, Forests and Wildlife

These sites states that the average wind speed is 25 to 30Kmph here.

They were quite strong. I wasn't sure whether we'd climb up initially. But once we went up there it was just amazing. I have never been in such strong winds, our max was the winds at the beaches.

Day07, 25.08.2010
Thekkady

Woke up to a very lazy day. It was raining throughout the night. Kerala is very dreamy in rains. Its a feeling you must experience. There are no parallels. I am terribly missing my good old days in Kerala.

Sipping hot tea, sat in the sit out thinking about my growing up years in Kerala. I would have drenched in almost all rains in Kerala when I lived there. Even this time it was no difference .

I remembered how I used to cycle back home from school in the rains wetting all the books, and mom getting angry over that, and me searching for plastic covers to cover the books and repeating the same story again and again every day. All those days are so fresh in memories, but they are yet so far away. Life definitely moves on, and that too very fast.

My thoughts were broken by the panicky cry of some monkeys above the roof. By the time I could realise anything they had cleared the place as fast as they had appeared.

This note came to my notice.
