Thekkady

Kids came back running and they want me to join them at the pool. I was like its raining, I dont want to get into the pool and all that. Kids surprises me by saying its not about swimming, but walking on the pool

I decided to check out what was all the pandemonium about. The whole deal is to be inside a ball and keep walking in that on water. But the guy will try to topple the ball so that you lose balance.

See the entire fun.

Feeling very lonely this day. We lost our lovely pet Dashy last Monday. She was suffering from a terminal cancer. Wanted to get myself occupied a bit to move on. Hence thought of being with you guys for a while and update the logs remembering some good times.

Day07, 25.08.2010
Thekkady

Near Kumily is a place called Vandanmedu. This place has a historic significance. This place is one of the world's largest auction centre for cardamom. I wanted to go and have a look at the place, if possible know something more about the process.

We left the resort by 11:00AM towards Vandanmedu. But as usual we were stuck with heavy rains. So the idea was to have rain drives for sometime.

We ended up near the Periyar Tiger Reserve gate and decided to have a been there picture.

A customary picture of the land mark near Kumily. Took this from the car. See the criss cross of the electric wires. From this statue onwards till the Periyaar Reserve gate is called Thekkady and the rest of the town as Kumily.

We continued onwards to Vandanmedu, taking a round about route and again reached Calvary Mount. Luck was still not in our favour. It was raining heavily. So decided to come back to Calvary Mount sometime again later.

Finally decided to hit Vandanmedu. It is a small hub, and we came to know that the auction centre had been moved from Vandanmedu to another place Puttady.

At Vandanmedu we stopped by MAS Enterprises Ltd. They are exporters and auctioneers of spices including green pepper, white pepper, and cardamom.

We ventured into their office and had a chat with their officers. A senior manager there happened to belong to the huge family tree of my wife, and he happily showed us around explaining the process of getting the produce from the farmers, sorting it, grading it and auctioning it. It was an involving discussion while the rains were at its full glory outside.

They began in 1978 as a supplier of agri-inputsand has today emerged as a leading plantation group in South India, and one of the foremost producers and exporters of spices.

After exchanging the pleasantries to the family members and talking about her relatives, we moved on from there.

Nowadays the auction is done at the Spice Boards new auction centre called Spice Park at Puttady.

There was an auction going on at the Spice Park, but having got all the information we needed from MAS, we moved on. It was still raining.

Driving around in Kerala in the rains has its own charms - I mean it.

Lalu Chetta,

Terribly sorry to hear about your dog.

Moving on to the travelogue - These are some fantastic photographs. Especially loved the Waterfall & Cumbum view shots

Couple of months back I had been to Cumbum but it was a hurried drive and missed out on the site seeing part. Next time when I venture out that side these places will be in my to see list

Lalu,

This is a beautiful travelouge you are making here. Knowingly or unknowingly these threads act as a great disseminator of information. In that here in thread itself there are a lot of little known info about great places etc.

So my request is if you don't know things for a fact please don't post wrong info. For example what you have posted above.

There is no special Onam day for Ezhavas as such. Onam days are indeed special for all Malluus irrespective of cast creed or religion -especially these days.

You know (hope) there are four Onam main days; are - 1st Onam (Onnam Onam) Thiru Onam (the 2nd day and most important), Munnam Onam (third day) and 4th Onam (nalam Onam). These days falls on the Star - days of Uthrittathi (1st Onam) Thiruvonam (2nd day), Avittam (3rd day) and Chatayam (4th day) of Chingam month of Mallu Calender (between 15th Aug and 15th Sept generally)

The Chatayam of Chingam happens to be the Birthday of Sri Narayana Gurudevan - who single handedly worked as the catalyst to bring about a soical refermation in all of Kerala and to uplift the soicial position of the Ezhava community to what it is today. This day is celebrated in Kerala as the "Chataya Dina or Narayana Guru Jayanthi day". The procession you saw was a procession organised by the SNDP Yogam (Sree Narayan Dharma Paripalana Yogam) pof that loaclity you were travelling through.

From your name I take it you are a Mallu (with a name like Lalu) Please get the facts about Mallu Land correct ("Keralam ennu kettalo thilakkanam chora nherambukalil" blood must boil in our veins when we hear the name of Kerla - to quote the famous poet Vallathol). Please pass on this to your lovely daughters - they will remember this at least.

A great thread you have here and brought back a lot of memmories of my bikings and rallying through that areas in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Best Regards & Drive/Ride Safe

Ram

I guess the fact that the day was special is factually correct from your post. I only meant that. Thanks for the info.

On the way back we took a wrong turn at the trial and ended up in the farmland where the tree house was built.

The farm land had Jack fruit trees in between cardamom plantations.

The pond was very nice with a lot of lotus/water lily in it. To have such a farmland and a pond - it is a dream. Forgive me for the number of pond pictures, this is what happens when you see such beautiful locations unexpectedly
