GD Sahab,

Gala time in winter. I couldn't spot anything in the "200 meters away in the thicket"shot, its your new hardware I told you. The ducks going round are doing Garba, usually this time of the year they do.

The one standing on one leg, no idea.

The lone duck I think is a Brahmini Duck.

@Sachin keep away from GD Sahab, he will make you a Nikonite.
Regards,

Regards,
I think that the lone duck is ruddy shelduck and the other one is black necked stilt.

No chance of converting into Nikonite ..... invested a hell lot of money in 7D

But maybe I can effect a reverse conversion - Do check out my pics on my thread - and see if i stand a chance to convert GD sir into a Canonite

P.S:- GD sir pls dont take this seriously, this is just in jest. I cant possibly have the audacity of thinking like this.

As GD Sir mentioned, the disappointment of not being able to see the elusive wild cat is always there (though we did spot a jungle cat) but nothing subsides the thrill of being in a jungle, meeting "old" friends and making new ones.

Thank you Fazalbhai. The bird standing on one leg is the Black-necked Stilt as pointed out by Sachin.

And yes it is the Brahminy Duck or the Ruddy Shelduck as pointed out by Sachin again.

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone becomes a Nikonite as exchanging the lens would be lot easier..?

Very true but you still have to get some good glasses. You can shift to Nikon now as well since you've only invested in a good body with kit-lens.

As for me now I've an array of lenses and migrating would be like starting from scratch. And you don't have to be apologetic Sachin. I know it was in jest...

YooHoo, my Nikon-TC-14E-II-AF-S-Teleconverter arrived today. Can't wait to lay my hands on it since my friend is taking this and the 300mm f/4 with him to the Rann.

Lovely photos and descriptions.

Is it easy to handhold the 80-200mm or the 300mm? Say compared to the 70-300mm?

I might someday go for the 300mm + the 1.4TC.

Thank you Nilanjan. I've always shot with the 80~200 handheld. The 300mm felt a bit heavier when I used it for the first time on 15th Jan. Need to use it more frequently to get the hang of it.

Well, the 70~300 feels featherlike after handling the 80~200..

And if you've deep pockets, I would suggest the 300mm f/2.8.

I had the 300mm f/4 in mind. f/2.8 is out of reckoning :-)

What are the lowest shutter speeds that you can use with your two lenses - handheld - and still get a decent picture?

A dear friend is taking the 300 with the TC to Rann for field testing. I only shot with it on 15th during the morning safari. Still haven't got the hang of it.

With the 80~200 at f/2.8 the lowest I've gone is 1/30 and have still managed a decent picture.

Since I mostly shoot wildlife, as the light deteriorates, I always boost up the ISO to get a higher shutter speed. 99% of my pictures have been shot handheld as I've a very old model of tripod (Bilara) on which the camera body is screwed making the process cumbersome.

Lovely pics GD sir and Sachin. It seems everyone (our last year's gang to visit Pench and Tadoba) on the forum is visiting jungles except me. Apologies for checking out this thread late and also for not contributing to my story of the 5 tiger cubs from Pench. It looks as if 2012 is going to be my exile year from the jungles as other things including a plan to get married has taken preference.

That said, you can hardly take the jungles out of me and once in a while I am still visiting Pench and Tadoba.

GD sir and Sachin, I hope to be with your gang very soon.

regards,
Dr. A Ghosh

What news of Shahrukh & Gauri? Haven't heard about them for quite long. And how's Bablu? Has his house got ready now? I remember seeing a picture somewhere that suggested that the house was completed. The Baaghin Naala Tigress goes past his house very frequently. Next time when I come to Pench, I would rather like to stay with Bablu...!

If this in any way points to PP, then let me clarify that I take pictures and post as it is - good, bad or ugly. The only PP that I do is cropping the photograph to enhance the subject.
Extremely sorry to reply this late.
No, I didn't mean anything about post processing but just the capture. Also following your thread closely and same thing I'm seeing again.

From the that great lot of tiger approaching, pointing out two shots.. 1. Oh no, not again and 2. Parallel to us at 15 feet. These were shot within the same time frame and there is a difference. Colours look more strong and over saturated. What's the reason?

Oh yeah, Thge Old Man speaks again. And look what he has got to say & I quote - "from that great lot of tiger approaching". He calls those shots great. Wow. Thanks Dada.

Now back to mother earth and to answer your query. For those particular shoots I fiddled with the camera settings trying to experiment. When I saw the result went back to my default settings. Didn't like them then but when I saw on the big screen these pictures somehow appealed to me so I put them out here. A lesson learnt - stop experimenting and stick to basics. Had I retained my original settings, probably these two shots would have been quite good.

Going to Sariska this Sunday to shoot exclusively with the 300 +TC14 to get a feel & hang of the lens. Any tips?

My shooting requirement is well restricted with 200mm max.
Though I thought of buying a 400mm sometime back but pulled back after thinking about very limited usage and prohibitive cost.

Not too sure but check if auto focus points change with 1.4 extender use. Image will be slightly softer and less contrasty for using extender. But I'm sure it's not that a serious problem.
